Dude

The 4runner is about the only thing that I own that's NOT a project. Don't need to turn it into to one.

Although the idea is still in my head. :flipoff2:

Slapped the assist ram and tc pump on today, definitely a huge upgrade from the pissed off stock pump. Part of the issue may have been that one of the plugs for the assist porta was hand tight :homer:

I picked up a tc pump kit from summit, had a vbelt pully, jic adapters, a res can and basic mount for $250 vs ~$450 for a bare pump from TG or psc. I did have to use a puller to slide it the pully off a bit, I remember doing the same thing on my psc pump and pully on my 4runner, so I think it's good, but I'd like a little more engagement. If I were to do it again, I'd just modify the stock bracket to push the pump out a bit, instead of using the TG one. I may pick up a TG pully just for piece of mind.

Then I had to shorten the cyl throw. I had a 1 3/4 x 6 1/2 ram from another project. I spent some time adjusting the tie rod, drag link and steering stops a while back. I could only get 5 1/8" out of it despite everyone selling 6" cylinders for Toyotas. So I made a 1 3/8" spacer out of some 1 1/4 x 1/4 wall Dom. I would have preferred aluminum of delrin, but this will be fine as it just sits there.

Got to love the diamond housing:smokin:

Just weld the tabs on the big flat spot and call it good.

Res mount was just 2 clamshell deals, so I just welded an ~8" piece of 1 1/2 coming off the shock hoop. No pretty, but if I keep this thing, it will eventually get everything chopped at the firewall and tubed.

20220911_174609.jpg

Right away, it was perfect, no noise whatsoever and steered back and forth about a dozen times with 1 finger. When I went to take it for a spin, I got a tiny bit of whine out of it a few times and a bit of bubbles in the res. I'm a little worried this box is junk, but I'll give it some more time to work it's self out.

love love love the boat sides. you will be super happy. the area behind the cab maybe have it flare out a bit , at least 1/2 to 3/4 out to kick the rear off trees, with out that i have had trees get stuck between my rear tire and the frame on the inside, and it was a bitch to get that out of there.

just an idea

We don't have 1000 small trees in the trails out here like you guys do out east, but I still continued the tube all the way to the tire. Decided not to kick it out though, just straight back. Should be pretty hard to get something wedged in there.

sound good..

Got off a bit early and got a bunch done on the passenger side. Went way faster since I knew exactly what needed to go and used the plasma for most of it.

Left off here. Have 2 of 5 stringers done. Still need to find some plate to finish it all off.

20220913_191352.jpg

BTW, if you're cutting this sheet metal, these diamond coated cutting wheels are pretty awesome. They aren't as aggressive as a regular cut off wheel, which is nice on the thin stuff. I've had it for a while now and it still cuts good. :smokin:

Oh, also, I was fucking around on my retaining wall deal and backed up it all the way. With most of the might on the front, it still steered lock to lock at idle. :smokin:

Nothing really new for hydro assist. but I was worried that pump and pully Combo might not be as good as the other aftermarket ones.

Added a list to the op to help me keep track of what I need to get done to this thing. Hopefully I have enough time. I'm also going to try and make it to a mountain mafia event this weekend to do a little test run.

Got the other side mostly done and picked up some metal to finish the rest. Had the local place shear them to size and barely had to mess with it to get it to fit :smokin:

Those damn belly mount tabs are driving me nuts. I want to cut them off and flip them inside, but not sure if I'll dive into that before this weekend.

Had them cut and bend some caps for the door. 14g with an 1 1/2" lip on the outside. Trying to add a little strength.

I also picked up some 3x5x120 box tube for something I'm pretty excited about, stay tuned! :flipoff2:

Late to the party buuuuttttt,

You would be much better off doing the normal shifting on the rear trans and using the front one for the range box. Then the rear one wouldn't be getting nearly as much abuse unless you were in low gear on the front trans. Given the ratio drop, that might not be to often.

Thats kinda what I've been trying to do. Keep the 1st trans in as high of a gear as possible. The only issue is the 2nd trans has a tcase shifter, so it's not super easy to shift:laughing:

I thought about shortening the first trans shifter and getting/building one of those linkage deals that guys use when swapping granny low 4 speeds in certain vehicles where the shifter ends up under the dash.

Something like this?

Seems like it would get janky if any of the pivots got even the slightest slop in them though

Wrapped up in the boat sides for now. Started on the winch mount. Cut the front bumper off first then got carried away

Couldn't bring myself to spend all the time cleaning up that scabbed together x member, so I just replaced it. A little voice was saying to cut more, more! But I'm running out of time.

Clocked the free spool lever on the old Harbor Frail from the side shit.

Decided to mount it at an angle for some reason. Probably should ha e mounted it higher, but more leverage on this old frame makes me nervous.

Was able to get out and use it today. The mountain mafia even has open wheelin and has this natural rock formation, plus a bit of man made stuff.

I am actually impressed with this thing. Not sure what it is about it, but seems to do really well. Very stable, flexes good, steers good. Tried a bunch of stupid lines and walked most of it. The boat sided are fucking awesome also. Especially in the stupid man made Boulder fields.

I even drove it up there, about 12 miles at 60 and, despite what it looks like, it actually drives really well. More pics to come :smokin:

Edit: forgot to mention, even that webber worked well. Ran really good on about all angles up, down and even pretty much had it on its side against the slider. :grinpimp:

this will give you grief the second time you pull side ways. first will be fine but then all the cable strands will start to break from rubbing on the edge and not the roller. old info and i am sure you have a plan, do like the winch mount with the angle also.

Oh I know.

It was a regular roller fairlead, but got mangled. I kinda saved it with some plasma work......

I'm not sure exactly what my plan is, but I think I'm going to build a hawse style out of tube when I build the bumper and also switch to rope.

that rope is so amazing, i did not switch till 2016 and why i waited so long is beyond me. hahahaha

good job on saving most of it.

I'm back and forth on rope. I currently have.... 5 winches  2 steel, 3 rope. They can both be a pain.

For a rock crawler, rope all day. Snow rig.... Hard to say, I've had them freeze and be really hard to unspool. But I've also had steel get tangled up.

I do like the safety aspect of rope.

never thought about freezing rope before, i bet that is a royal pain.... on my land cruiser i use cable for my winch because it is used for a plow, so i to dont think rope would take that abuse..

Funny, I have a little utv plow I put on my 4runner or samurai and have been worried about the rope.

so for a side by or atz, i got a 20 foot 10k tow strap, cut off the loop on one end and wrapped that up instead of rope because i always broke the rope, with the strap it did not care, it took the abuse. and since its just used for up down a couple feet max the strap just works good. there was a few post somewhere on line about this and i tried it out. it worked great..

I was actually thinking about doing the same thing. Even a regular 2" ratchet strap would probably work fine.

I know a guy who uses a 4" strap on his buggy winch exclusively

mine was a 2 inch strap if i recall. cheap o from the farm store i believe.

especially if you use one of them crazy two inch ratchets that have 17 foot of strap plenty there to use. hahaha hell you could even use the J hook too.
