What's new

2006 overland / light duty crawler build

I added the extra leafs for a little weight, a little height, and a bit more progressive feel but it’s still a little firm, and after driving it over the weekend I’m thinking it should feel just right if the flip makes it a little softer. Keep in mind this is the lightest version of this truck, and nobody made anything with that in mind. The whole theme of this build is finding the sweet spot. If I decide I don’t like it I’ll change it
I forget, did you swap to the longer leafs off the newer trucks? Supposedly that makes a big difference on the older ones.

No, I haven’t. I see the placement of the front spring hanger getting in the way of where I want sliders to mount. Trying to make do with stock 06 length, which I feel like I’m close doing. If what I’m doing doesn’t work out I’ll just get custom leafs made. It’s not like these are short, so I figure there has to be a way. I’m not exactly a desert racer

Really hoping the 4link gives me a bit more flex in the front, as you can see in the photos I just posted the stock radius arms work like shit

It definitely looks like the back is doing all of the flexing.

What trails did you end up on?

What trails did you end up id Lincoln creek, Richmond hill, Taylor pass, and tin cup pass
We did Lincoln creek first day, then day two did Richmond hill to Taylor pass, and the last day we did Tin Cup pass.

Tin cup was littered with side by sides but still fun

Richmond hill and Taylor pass were awesome and the views up there are top notch

Lincoln creek doesn’t have any obstacles or anything special but it has good camping, and if you’re willing to do a short hike Anderson lake is pretty rad and has good fishing

I love how all my wheeling pics I’m so happy with were the last posts before the page changed lol. Who wants to do a trip next month? I want to do wheeler lake or maybe holy cross

I'm up for either but I've been wanting to do Holy Cross forever. When are you thinking?

Probably just before October, maybe even early October. I have some work to do on this first, but I’ve been eyeballing that one for a while now

Upper link is 80% the length of the lower. Option A in my opinion kills more ground clearance than I’m comfortable losing so I’ll probably shave off the bracket to get rid of it, but I’m curious of what your thoughts are here, and why you would pick one over the other. Ride quality, flex, etc…

C looks like it would Feel like a radius arm.
The links still travel in different arcs from each other vs a radius arm which travels in a single arc. As you lift one end of an axle with radius arms it binds as the passenger and driver side of the axle end mounts try to twist in opposite directions, which is why some guys with radius arms will pull a bolt out of one of the arms at the axle end for more flex.

My biggest question here is which of these options will create the least amount of binding and there for the most flex. I understand that A, B, and C will have different anti squat, and I’ll be taking that into consideration as well, but it’s not what I’m trying to understand at the moment

Decided to port the steering box, sunk the fittings in pretty good, regularly checking to make sure I wasn’t removing to much material with the tap. made sure to get the fittings flush with the inside, had to pull them out and trim them a little bit. Whole ordeal was a 10/10 pain in the ass but well worth it. I also installed the rest of the steering, and front suspension. Drives great, happy with it. gonna do the shackle flip tomorrow, hoping it rides a little cushier like the front.

box tap looks good! have you driven it much with the ram assist yet?? curious to hear how it feels on road, and at slow speeds. does the stock pump keep up with the steering. looks great dude

it feels much more powerful, seems that the pump is happier even though mine was making a ton of noise before. I think this might actually be putting less stress on it, but I could be wrong

So I got the shackle flip installed feels great, happy with it for now except I want to recenter the rear axle maybe a 1/2 inch to the rear

Im still looking into the motor options for when this thing goes to shit, figure I have a year to save up. I spoke with ford performance and apparently the 7.3 will directly bolt up to my existing transmission, as for motor mounts not sure yet. Now the question im currently looking at is... do I buy a used motor for a little over 6k, or a crate motor brand new with warranty for a little over 8k?

I think it is going to be all the stuff you need to make that motor run that will be what nickels an dimes you.

you think its possible to retrofit a dash from a junk yard truck that came with the 7.3 into my truck, at least then I wouldn't have to worry about gauges

little update on the ram assist, pump is definitely happier. plus I can cruise down the bumpy ass 25 out here at 75mph comfortably while barely paying attention to the wheel with one hand. well worth it

Local guy has a single cab short box 7.3 powerstroke truck that he swapped a 6.7 into with factory gauges. So it could be done I'm sure. I just don't have a clue how:homer:
