What's new

2006 overland / light duty crawler build

Decided to grab the angle grinder to clearance the fenders a bit, and pick up some new to me 40’s

Looks like I will need a 2in bump stop extension in the rear and a 1 in to 1.5 in the front. That said whenever my broke ass can afford it I’m probably going to go the “as much down travel as I can get” route, I have enough up travel for comfortable normal trail driving but I’d like to set it up so that if I feel like booking it then it will sit a little higher in the travel, plan is deavers, and the longest coilovers I can fit up front with taller aftermarket shock towers, probably going to go with PMF because they make a coil bucket replacement coilover mount that allows for a longer travel coilover vs everything else I’ve seen on the market

which of the these seem less sketchy, picture #1, or picture #2? I would like to go with the trac-inator set up by Baja Customs at some point but as previously stated im relatively broke at the moment so these are my options

also how strong are the stock hubs on these axles? should I just carry a spare, should I plan on switching to the warn hubs I've attached a picture of? or should I just say fuck any kind of remaining gas mileage and go with drive flanges

think ill probably just carry a spare hub till I can afford the drive flange or want premium hub options, but still curious about your thoughts. I do plan to road trip this thing a lot

So I snapped the rear main leaf on the passenger side, I decided to buy replacements from general spring for both sides, cause if one is cracked the other might not be far behind. In the process of pulling it out I discovered the sleeves inside the stock bushings in the shackles were seized up and basically one with the bolts holding them in so I’m gonna need to buy new shackles and hardware, been looking at the pmf long travel shackles and carlis but if I can’t afford them probably just gonna throw some stockers in till I can afford the spring hanger kit for 2008 plus springs and someday deavers

picked up the new shackles and rebuilt the leaf packs, pulled the 3rd largest leaf out as well as drill some holes in the spring clips and bend them up so I can get more down travel out of them. truck might actually sit a little higher with the new main leafs even though I removed a leaf from the pack, and it rides so much better. I would get a shot of it sitting on its own weight but half way through when I was done with the first side I fell down some stairs and broke my phone and my ankle, so need to fix that, but thanks to the tequila gods I was able to finish the job anyway. Hurting pretty good at the moment but what you gonna do

So kinda dumb question probably, but what would I need to swap a coyote engine in this thing, never done an engine swap before. Seems like a much better engine. What kinda special parts and electronics should I be aware of

May be easier and cheaper to do a 7.3 takeout?

cant speak to the electronics part. but I've read the motor mounts are the same between the triton and coyote. sounds like it should drop right into place of a 4.6 /5.4 /6.8.

I've thought about it, I'd do the new 6.8/7.3 gas motor over a 5.0 coyote. Will bolt to the 5R110 I believe

Went back and looked, he's got the manual, so even better, as long as the flywheel matches up

so if I go with the Godzilla take out motor what else would I need to grab to make it run right and still have heat and AC. Never done an engine swap before but not opposed to giving it a go sometime in the next year. Those Godzilla motors can apparently handle over 1k horsepower on stock internals, sounds pretty impressive to me, and if I can get it in and running right I’ll have a lot of room to play around if I want more power down the road

You hurt the 5.4?
It’s got a little over 190,000 miles on it and studders a bit off idle as well as at low rpm going up hill in other gears, feels good at higher rpm’s but it’s acting up, and I’m worried about it.

I replaced the spark plugs at 140k, put a new fuel pump and filter in a few months ago, and cleaned the throttle body recently. It’s running lean, and throwing a code for the pcv valve. I put a filter on top of the pcv valve and plugged the hole where it would otherwise connect to in the air intake, still running lean, can’t figure out what is going on. I’m getting tired of messing with it, but it would be great if I could get another 50 or 60k out of it

For what I'm starting to see rigs with 6.2's sell for. I wonder if it would be worth even messing with that one.

Yeah I like my truck though, and a 7.3 Godzilla take out with 30k on it goes for what looks like under 6k on eBay. Even if it costs double that to put it in properly it’s still cheaper than a newer truck that’s completely stock and has no memories in it. It will need a new motor at some point, just kinda up in the air about which one I’m going to go with until then. My wallet at that point in time will probably be big factor
