What's new

1st gen Tacoma Reg cab

Yard wheeling…. Definitely need to rework the rear shocks. But that for another day

I forgot to take the shipping pin out of the boost gauge. The clutch cancel switch is a poor man’s anti-theft device. Not sure why the PO made it mandatory, but I’m leaving it. The ARB switches are wired wrong… nbd. The 5.0 is too low for anything but crawling. I like the 1/4 turn hubs compared to the 3/4 on the xtracab. And I’m going to start looking for a wrecked truck to grab the tilt column and intermittent wiper switch.

I really dig the manual windows and locks, for some odd reason.

Thought about it . But I’m way over budget on this already… so Ill just have to get used to it

Cant recall if asked but how's the charger on the RZ? Got some pep or what?

This is the first 3rz I’ve ever driven, so I don’t know if I can answer that with any authority.

It definitely seems to have a good amount of torque. But I’ve only put about .5 mile on it since I bought it. Still waiting on the damned AFR gauge from Haltech.

After a few more “dimensions?” Messages… finally got a response: “I decided to keep it and put it on my 88 pickup.”
There's a special circle in hell for sellers that go silent when the thing they're selling is no longer available.

Took the truck to the market today. I really need to find a parts truck to grab a tilt column.

The a-pillar pod was interfering with the manual mirror control. 10 minutes and that's resolved.

I can't deal with the exhaust... It's put together from a 2.5" stainless kit. Has a 13" CI/OO muffler and an 8" resonator that I ditched for a 10"... still too loud.

So thinking about "factory" style bolt in kit. Cheap-ish and quiet. Problem I'm running into is i can only find 2" exhaust for the 3rz... I really don't to choke it down that much... so trying to find a 2.25" instead... Not really having much luck. Anyone's Google-Fu work better than mine?

I wonder if 5vze kit will be easy to make work with a reg cab? If I use any of the current exhaust, it's all going to have to be custom...
Did they not sell a reg cab with 5vz? Obviously you'll have to modify the downpipe.

They sold the 4Runner with the 5vz, which is about the same wheelbase as regular cab. Rear suspension is different though, so the tailpipe probably is too.

4runner is completely different animal after the cat.

ended up ordering the walker unit you linked... and the mid-pipe to match.. both 2.25". And cheap enough that I can hack it up if needed.

I used a cheap round muffler off rockauto, super quiet, my trans and tcase are louder than my exhaust.

i always ran 3 chamber flow masters on my toyota 4cyl

Rock auto 2.25” arrived today.

Muffler is 2.25” in… Less than 2” out and right back to 2.25” for the tailpipe.

All 2.25” except about 2”….

Good news is that it has an o2 bung… so I can cancel my haltech AFR gauge and use the one I have… I now will have 3 o2 sensors. :lmao:

Can’t remember who posted it… but the intermittent wiper switch is indeed simple plug n play and works great.

AFR gauge arrived. Do not like that it requires a phone app to set it up, but after a few minutes of that, it’s solid.

Picked up a bunch of parts. Looks like the column should be easy to swap. Wondering if I can figure out a use for the cruise control lever/seitch…. This may end up getting buckets and console in the future.

Finally installed the exhaust today. Holy smokes... what a difference! It's drivable now!

Of course, now the Atlas sound even louder... :homer:

And Tech: What would cause the speedo to be a) 90-95% off as soon as 20mph is hit? and b) bounce so much? I'm guessing speed sensor on the Atlas?

In this vid, I was going about 45 mph.

good ole bouncy mechanical speedo

my only guesses is that is has the wrong tooth count speedo gear or maybe the one in there isn't clocked right? (mine had indexing notches for different tooth-count/sized gears)

I’m pretty sure this is electronic… at least it is in my other two tacomas. I think they all went electronic in 01(?)

Ahh, you're right, they might have even went electronic a little earlier than that, Sure does bounce like my 95 mechanical...

I think it still works the same, electronic or not, at the atlas though. May be worth pulling the speedo gear out to inspect

I think whether it has a speedo cable or electronic speedo sensor depends on the transmission type, too, to a given manufacture date. The '93 4Runner I'm hacking on has a factory electronic speedo, no cable. The factory harness plugs right into the mechanical to electronic adapter required when using an R1FA t-case (or whatever the '79-'85 gear driven t-cases are now identifying as). That rig was a factory autotragic, everything is a G-damn Hall sensor. However, my '97 Taco still uses a speedo cable. That truck still has it's factory 2nd gen R-150F gearbox with "seperate" chain-driven t-case. The speedo in the Taco started bouncing REAL bad, too. I found another '97 cluster on CL for ~$25 and just swapped out the speedo head, keeping the original odometer part and mileage reading. The bouncing was eliminated.

Did a little work on it today. It has the Advanced Adapters Toyota adapter kit, which is a ~1' cable to electronic speed sensor... then to Toyota wiring.

Pulled it out and tried to test, but couldn't find the wiring diagram to be sure. Put it back on and it worked great for about 5 miles... almost spot on. Then it started to bounce a bit.

I don't know if it's the sensor or if it's running through the Haltech ECU. Have to investigate that tomorrow.
