What's new

1962 Mercury ADHD build

The Derale one seems ok, I agree that the Flex-a-lite is probably a little undersized, altho with PWM the fan shouldn't pull as much current anyway. The Autocoolguy (ACG) and DC Controls controllers can handle a ton more current, even more than the Derale one, altho you won't need it for that fan. I don't like the stick-on sensor tho. The ACG has an inline sensor and the DC uses a delta sensor in the fins of the radiator so I'd say pick one based on the sensor you prefer because all 3 controllers seem to get the job done just fine.

ordered the Derale one on the weekend just cause of ease to getting it vs the other ones for me.

trimmed the fan some more to fit a bit better and got in in the truck. its a deep fan but still room between it and the water pump

heater installed, its a Maradyne heater with duct kit. was able to hook one vent kit up the the stock defrost in the dash and left the other open for radiant heat in the cab. didnt have grommets for the hose through the firewall so tried to dimple them and it did make a nice smooth spot but still went and ordered some bulkhead fitting so just have to wait on them now

A heater...
Guess it would be nice 1000 miles north, snow wheeling.

I don't think I have ever used the heater in mine, just AC.
:smokin:

:smokin:
need a heater for sure around here. have never had a wheeler with AC but most of mine also didnt have glass so guess thats the trail ac :lmao:

not much for an update as took some time off and the gf and i went to Vegas for a week. home now and got the front suspension done. was able to use the stock upper mounts and welded new lower mounts to the diff instead of the ubolt plate. added some C channel on the frame for the bump stops to hit, even if i dont think i will be able to flatten the springs enough to actually hit them :homer:

got some small jobs done this weekend, nothing worth taking pics of but did get a battery mounted up. wasnt able to fit the stock battery tray under the hood anymore so used the stock tray and mounted it in the box. modified it to fit a group 31 yellow top

know its not tuesday but im sure this is a stupid question. can a use a small body 5speed starter from a 92+ truck with my 4 speed? just thinking about wiring and the small body starter is nicer to wire

What's the tooth count on your flywheel? There's 2 different ones for small block manual

just put a new fly wheel in and its 164 tooth and listed same from 81-96 for both 4 and 5 speeds so guess that means i can use the small body starter :homer:

was to cheap to by exhaust elbows so bought a stick and wasted time and welding wire making a Y pipe

used the same muffler from the last truck but exhaust is quite a bit longer on this one

got the dash back together, no sold on the tach placement so might see if i can move that around

with the wiring done i started adding coolant and found the rad i had leaked, was able to pick up another one from Loki89t and it seems to be holding. dumped fuel in it and sure enough the fuel shut off valve and fuel cell fittings leaked, so took the valve out and got new fittings and that fixed the leaks. with the leaks taken care of i hit the starter switch and after a few fuel primes it fired right up and idled

have some tuning to deal with but its getting close now

so made a list of what all needs to be done before wheeling this thing

You really need a giant ass ricer tach in a cool old truck with a mostly stock engine?

nope but its what i had :flipoff2:and dont have a rev limiter so shift light will be nice instead of floating valves :homer:

You could use the smaller 3 3/8 stock looking tach or go all in on a Dakota Digital with the tach.

feel like it needs some lights in the bumper to make it look less square

didnt have any lights that fit so have to find something, but added a fender/grille bar and called it good enough for now

need to time and tune the efi a bit then load recovery gear, tools and some spare parts in the truck. otherwise i think its ready for shake down run next weekend

started laying out the trail gear last night. looks like a spare 44 will fit just fine, bolted an ammo can in for recovery gear and cooler mount

WUZfxvCkgyxV-6SjBjGWDxfZi17SyaZC3jTgyai2Ls4Q=w2400.jpg

did round stock around the cooler to hold it and an old seat belt to keep it there but still easy to open

Thay fancy efi doesn't have a rev limiter?

Seat belt is sweet also.

You coming to mt havoc this year?

efi is not controlling the timing, does have a fuel limiter so can set that. did move the tach under the dash so not so much in your face anymore :flipoff2:

dont plan on coming to havoc this year. do have some time off at end of july and will be on the Canadian side of Bonners Ferry by the boarder so thinking of coming down there to grab lunch at the Mexican restaurant :smokin:

spent some time last night setting timing and playing with the efi getting the IAC set and that went well. while all that was happening my fan decided it didnt want to work, even bypassing the controller it wouldnt power up. block heater started to leak and so did the rear main :mad3:. pulled another fan out of shed and will fit that up tonight, got a frost plug to replace the block heater. going to try some 20w50 shit box oil and see if it slows the leak enough that i can get out this weekend to see what else is wrong with the truck before pulling it back apart :shaking:

Well let me know, I'll buy you one of their giant ass

so last night didnt go as planned.

started off swapping fans out, had a big dual fan set up that i made work. it hangs over the side tanks a bit and i had to cut the bottom corner to clear rad hose. it moves something like 4000cfm so thats a plus

wanted to test the new fan make sure it was working and no issues. fired up the truck and it ran for about a minute then just shut off. fired it back up and ran for 30 seconds then shut off, did this about 3 times then just would not start at all. so swapped my new ignition box that has maybe 10mins of run time on it for an old 1970s one and truck fired right up no problem :mad3:

QsGpUeDivsGgDmttRIBMo2VYrkG_uXUOwGp2kCJpphYw=w2400.jpg

figured with the new fan working and having the old ignition box in and working i would drain the oil and swap in the shit box 20/50 to see if the rear main leak would slow down enough to wheel this weekend. as soon as i started to loosen the oil drain plug coolant started to come out :mad3: might just be an intake gasket but between that and the rear main ive decided to just pull the motor and put i back on the stand and do new seals and gaskets and probably bearings as well. will deal with the leaking block heater at that time and toss new head gaskets at it as well. maybe a cam if got the cash :shaking:

Fucks sake man some shitty luck on the final stretch.

Sounds about like how my truck went. Front cover leaked and repair left pan leaking. Though it was rear main. After cam break in I pulled intake to check for leak and dropped a block off plate into open intake runner, into cylinder. :homer:

Take a deep breath (or puff), open a beer and continue onward...

A lot of this thread is what helped encourage me to get to work on my Ranger, I just hope I don't catch the motor malfucktions you've been having :flipoff2:

Oof, that sucks. i feel ya on the engine woes, i hate rework. i rebuilt my 460 twice because of a cam failure during engine break-in. Its not fun.
