'05+ Ford Super Duty Dana 60 Axle Tech & Info

This is literally my life right now.
33" wide front frame
70" wms
40" on 4.5" bs wheel
Even with straight front links I can only get about 38* when the tire contacts the frame.
Adding to the wms or wheel changes are the only things I could change to achieve more.
My future SAS:
'94 Bronco; 38"~ wide front frame horns
'05-'12 Ford F-350 Dana 60 SRW with DRW adaptors (for the width, while maintaining the ability to run 17" rims).
40"-44"

99-04 OEM inner c, knuckle and unit bearing vs 05- up OEM inner c, knuckle and unit bearing.
NOT perfect because I have a high steer arm welded on the 99-04 knuckle and no wheel studs in the 99-04 unit bearing. I am not removing wheel studs or cutting off the high steer just to get a better comparison. :flipoff2:
2010 knuckle with window above lower BJ.

99-04
bearing bored for 35 spline 20.8 lb - 9.43 kg
inner c 15.0 lb - 6.80 kg
knuckle with high steer 30.0 lb - 13.6 kg

Total 65.8 lb - 29.84 kg

05 -up
bearing 23.8 lb - 10.79 kg
inner c 21.0 lb - 9.52 kg
knuckle milled for B/K high steer 26.6 lb - 12.06 kg

Total 71. 4 lb - 32.38 kg

Difference of
5.6 lb - 2.54 kg

What length stroke DE ram and steering knuckles are folks using to get 40 plus degrees out of the steering? I’m swapping in a 05 axle in place of the 04 and going full hydro at the same time. Looking at the PSC 2.5, 8 or 10 inch???

I used a 2.5 x 10. I need to make (qty 2) stops around 1" thick, so realistically you could probably get by with an 8" stroke

what ram and arms do you run?
If you're talking to me, it's a surplus center 2.5x8x1.5 rod and the arms are weaver fab with his machined knuckles. I drilled the hole in the arms about a 1/4" off from where it needs to be to get exact stock lock to lock steering. My 40's rub the frame lightly at the stock knuckle stop. I'll just grind the stops a little to accommodate my fuck up and the tires will rub the frame a little more at lock to lock:flipoff2:

Has to deal with steering arm length. Not necessarily just ram length.
Yeah sorry reworded my original question. What ram and steering arms are you using to get max steering out of your 05+ axles??

05+ high steer arms from weaver fab
I just saw this... if you have weaver arms, you don't need to make internal stops. If you drill your tie rod holes further away from the knuckle your 10" ram's entire stroke can be utilized with no need for stops... how many degrees are you looking for? And from the center of the ball joint, where is your tie rod hole located?

As an aside, you also need to know how many degrees they are achieving, and if they're driling their own holes(weaver or the like) or using whatever the weld on kit supplies for tie rod hole location.

I see people occasionally asking “where da cheap axles at?” There’s a 05+ in F town for $250 bucks on marketplace. I don’t know anything about it because I don’t need any. But $250 would be cheap just for inner and outer C’s.

So 🤣🤣🤣 at toy mini truck axles for over $1000 bucks. :shaking:

Yea, if that was closer, I would probably get that just to set in my lawn.

I search frequently and managed to snag one for $150 without knuckles/calipers

99.9% of them are 800-1500 here in California, but I guess deals occasionally pop up.

Ya one guy told me he ran a trailer out of state just to pick up axles to bring back to CA to sell

I thought I got a deal when a junkyard sold me one for $600, apparently that still has some CA tax on it :flipoff2:

I think Jake Burkey of BKR buys them by the trailer load for building 14B steer axles. IIRC he only pays a couple hundred a piece

Yeah I see them on copart for less than what CA charges, if you were able to get enough of them at one time it could be worth it bringing them back.

Did you hit the PnP by you? The American Canyon, San Jose, Salinas and Moss Landing are like $3-400 for a complete front axle, sometimes with a sale they’re less. My buddy pulled one from the American Canyon for like $180 I think. They just don’t pop up in yards very frequently, he just happened to stumble across it.

That makes sense. He’s also East coast right? I’ve been spoiled by west coast lack of rust my whole life, I wonder if the stuff he’s getting out there is only worth scrap cutting up to harvest parts? If not I wonder why not use 2wd beams.

It was out in San Jose or Morgan hill, maybe it wasn't that good of a deal

I see them on FB marketplace for $1k all day

He sells D60 centers and 14B outers and axles. For the bouncer stuff I think there’s just no substitute for the strength of a 14B diff and nothing better for the money than SD outers. He is south east but he travels west picking up axles for his builds, hauling trailer loads at a time.

If I was bouncing, that’s what I’d build too.

We don't even have to travel north is you only need 1 or 2 at a time. They are $250 -$400 locally in Bham.

Bought 30 earlier this year for 9k, just bought 8 more for 2k. Just gotta find them. St.Louis area
Last 2.5 year 187 SD60s

But who’s collecting them in enough quantities for you to come buy them in bulk like that? Have you just worked contacts at wrecking yards that they pull em and hold ‘em for you to buy in bulk?

Understand that might be too much into your business to answer… but just curious

I buy from multiple yards. Call them up. Buy everything they have and wait 6 months or so till I call back. 2 yards within 150 miles of me have 40+ axles in stock at all times.

That's also what I was doing when I was moving 05+ axles a while back.

south of KY there is no rust.

You guys suck. Up north the only SD axles we get seem to be off a plow truck that seemed like they were following a salt truck their whole life. Beaten into the ground with a quarter million miles.

Last set I bought I drove almost two hours one way because I was scoring a set of crusty 4.30 axles with a factory diff lock for $1200.

Got them home to find out they were 3.73 and had to use strong words to get them to refund me. My mistake but that's how fun it is.

My project is using axles I got for Free99 from a friend because unless you want a Dana 30 or a bare housing there aint shit in New England anymore.
