Tuesday trailer question

dad always told me if the trailer is 16ft long the front axle should be 16" behind the center, etc. he worked for a place that built and worked on trailers a long time ago.

Got the caliper brackets mocked up. Those are 99-04 Superduty brackets. Gonna need to clock them down to clear the frame at full bump. If it weren't for that I'd have gone for three.

You guys think this is good for the spring hangers?

The short scrap of channel simulates the frame. The trapezoid is my "lift kit" and the 2x1/4 square tube is what takes the lateral force.

The goal here is to run the springs under the axle and have them be just a couple inches negative when the axle is on the bump stop.

Is the trapezoid channel or box? I wouldn't use channel cut down that much. Can you run a piece the full length to cover both axles? Pretty sure that's how my 7k hauler is built up.

Channel.

I can fill the open ends with flat stock to give it more side side rigidity if needed.

I figure the channel web takes the fore-aft load, the square tube takes the side to side load and the fact that I'm doing comically tight cross-member spacing keeps the frame from twisting.

I don't really have anything around suitible for a full width crossmember at this location.

it will be fine, it's only a spring hanger. Have you looked at any of the commercial built trailers, it's a wonder most of them make it a year.

Oh I know how commercial trailers are built. I'm taking them as an example of what not to do.

I wasn't paying attention to the square tube on top. I was worried about stiffening the web of the channel and that'll certainly do it. You could always weld a stiffener IN the channel too, but probably not needed with 1/4" wall tube welded to the face. Run it.

Here's the tentative axle location. Deck is 14ft. This is 7" aft of the deck center. It's where the OEM equalizer was and there's a crossmember here.

I'm hoping that the big tire and single axle helps make the trailer look small.

And I pussied out on the pallet racking crossmembers. If it was winter I probably would have gone for it but it was 92 degrees and extra work didn't seem fun so I left the OEM crossmembers and picked up enough channel to add another six for $220. The OEM crossmembers are 3". The new ones are C4x5.4

Oh, and I forgot to take a pic until just now but the new tail crossmember is C6 just like the frame and has a hitch just in case I need to tow doubles:flipoff2:

its gonna be too tail heavy. axle needs to be a least 14" behind center.

So here's how it ended Friday:

Flipped it over with the loader and added spring hangers. It's just barely too heavy for me to curl so I gotta curl the back tires into the air and then use the boom and the counterweight to "bounce" it up to get the tires back on the ground.

Turns out I lost my 1-1/4, 6" rise 2-5/6 abomination of a hitch mount so I had to make a temp one.

And send that bitch to the scale...

Still needs some final welding (there's a couple shitty spots we wanna lift if up with the crane to do) and a bunch of other little shit but at least it's not in my yard anymore.

Ah, I was thinking it had the extended tongue/deck for a backhoe with a long stick, or something.

I actually never saw the backhoe on it but I think that the rear bucket hung over the back. You may be right though, now that I think about it, it was a pipe trailer, then a backhoe trailer that also hauled pipe then just a pipe trailer. It had to haul 15' & 20' pipes.

I assume you could put a fair amount of pipe on the trailer deck between the wheels of a 580 size backhoe and if you set the front bucket on it, you wouldn't even have to tie it down :lmao:
The guys who put up our pole barn carried a bunch of 6x6 posts on the deck of the trailer between the tracks of their CTL

Anyone know if 90s Chevy 3500HD springs are the same 64" dimension as the half tons?

Put some trailer springs on that pos unless you plan on running a sway bar
