Tourist submarine exploring Titanic wreckage disappears in Atlantic Ocean

That thing should have had a few of bags of rope on the outside with 8000 feet of 1/8 amsteel connected to something that floats, and some manual mechanism to release from inside (magnets? small release charge that can be set off with battery?). Obviously they should have been located on different sides of the sub.

Bobber floats up and has transponder gizmo, rescue vessel connects grappling hook with guide ring onto the 1/8 amsteel, then drops it down to the vessel. Vessel has mess of cable/rings at attachment point of 1/8 amsteel. grappling hook snags it and hoists it up.
great plan until you catch the hull of the Titanic with it

Ahh, so that platform submerges, the craft floats on or off, then it pumps the water out and floats itself? Then the craft just chills on that thing and gets towed around (or dragged onboard the support vessel?). I hadn't searched for pics, super interesting.
Yeah; towed:

There’s a ridiculously long thread on arfcom where I read about this first, a lot of interesting info over there but a bunch of shit to wade through too.
Since you waded through the BS, can you bring the interesting stuff here for us?

Every single news conference of his type begins with an endless droning of heroes who we are and here’s how sad we are and here’s how hard we are working. No one needs to hear that and if they do put it at the end like in a scientific paper.

And after waiting through all that the news is we still don’t know anything.

Friggin BS just let them do their jobs and when they have something to report it can be done in two or three simple paragraphs.
But then how would the News Infotainment companies get their clickbait views? Won't someone think of the clicks?

Yeah I was blown away by that. I guess they have an answer, but I thought most of these small subs/ROVs were hooked up to a crane and lifted onto/from the deck of the support ship as part of the standard operation. I wonder how they handle the logistics on this thing with no attachments
Doesn't seem like they've put a whole lot of thought into recovery if something were to go wrong and they needed to be rescued or the computer broke...

Wonder how long until it's a Mr. Ballen story. I listen to this dude on podcast, he's kinda annoying on youtube, but he's a Navy Seal so ya gotta respect that. Some weird stuff out there, and a lot of stuff about deep diving.

I doubt there's anything that bangs once every 30 minutes like clockwork though.

You can last quite a bit longer than 3 days if all you're doing is sitting aroundh.in a cool place.

Yeah, the ocean is vast but if it's near the surface they would have a pretty decent idea of where it is given current conditions, etc. It's not like they would be just randomly looking in the entire ocean. Surface conditions would play a significant factor if it was choppy though.

I don't think the 30 minutes like clock work is correct.

And a "bit longer" than 3 days??? so when did they go down? Sunday?
Maybe, but a bit isn't very technical but I think dehydration

At first I felt sorry for him.
Then started to find out about the shortcuts and cheapskate stuff he pulled.
Finally, when I heard about his woke anti-50 year old white man thing, I lost even more respect and sympathy for him.

And now this? Yeah...

Is it true that he installed a window rated for 1300m rather than one rated for 4000m because it was cheaper?

This dude obviously subscribed to the “let me as a CEO do everything I can to make certain that we get sued out of existence“ playbook.

Regarding safety. I agree with Me making the choice for ME. I can choose the level of safety I am good with. When it comes to other people though..... especially if I'm charging 250k for the experience.

I kinda need more context. The Media misrepresents so much, I don't arebitrarily believe anything they print

In his defense, this site is the stupid should hurt crowd. We can't bubble wrap our children and adults with to much money die too.

I would restate that as he was trying to achieve the extremely difficult with a weak business case given the capital required to do it right and the limited opportunity for enough passengers who would pay enough to provide a return on investment. I guarantee that $250,000 a seat probably only covers a fraction of the true cost of one expedition.

Thanks for that we all now know what a rich idiot looks like.

Even James Cameron has his limits, and had a better submersible.

I edited after you guys quoted so let me ask here:

Anyone confirm true or not that the guy bought and installed a window rated at 1300m rather than the needed 4000m rated one because the 1300m was cheaper?

If true, that's your context.

And now he will single handedly be responsible for a massive increase in govt regulation on the private sub industry, and possibly increased regulation on all kinds of tourism related businesses.

Not exactly. The company that certified the window was only capable of certifying up to 13,000 psi. They were not willing to spend the extra money required to be able to certify it at full onion.

This topic is certainly generating a lot of traffic here between this thread and the two spin offs. Someone Google it and see if Irate is coming up at the top of the list.

It may or may not be true, No... No it's not context unless he said it when discussing the decision. He could have said it ANY TIME IN HIS LIFE.

Hell, I talk about inherent risk in life all the time. Doesn't mean I am going to act negligently.

I ain't taking up for the guy, he's probably a tool, but I don't believe the media pulling a quote with no context either.
