The Snowmobile Thread

A couple friends and I were discussing sleds the other night. We were talking about all the guys we see who spend tons of money swapping in lighter parts so they can save weight and go faster. 99% of these guys are fat asses who could achieve the same results for free by eating a salad once a week :lmao:

Miss this stupid thing. Was ancient even 10 years ago but was quite fun. Couldn't imagine these newer sleds. Newest one I've rode was a 04 900 Mountain Cat 151". Was super impressive what it would climb. Moved 3+ hours from the major riding areas, so no reason to have one these days. Growing up, we were hour from the front door at sea level to 7000+ ft in an area that held the world record for the amount of snowfall in 1 season. Riding season from Nov to June.

Built this as my high school project. 96 Polaris Ultra 680 RMK, 159" track, SLP heads, triple pipes, longer front spindles, plastic skis, mountain bars, and more I am sure I am forgetting. Was a pig even compared to sleds 5 years newer, but was fun as my first real 'project'. Sold it do fund dual cases in my wheeler.

Damn you guys, I really want a snow bike, just can't decide what bike to use. Really want a ktm or husky efi 300 2 stroke, but most of the snow bike guys say even the 450s will eat it up in the powder. Ktm 500 is also tempting.

Sorry for the hijack :flipoff2:

You in the market for a street legal 16 KTM 350 EXC/F that has barely been used? Thinking about selling mine here soon. I dont ride it very often and it seems like a waste just letting it sit around. It would make a bad ass snow bike. Has almost the power of the 450SX (after I did some engine upgrades) and is lighter than a 450. :smokin:

Lil Yota could pick it up on his way back from Austin's place.

Ok Im not familiar with mountain sleds or new regular sleds. Whats up with the funky loops sticking up in the middle of the handlebars? Protection from hitting the bars or some kinda grip for sidehilling?

It has different names but I usually hear it called a mountain bar. It’s another grip for when you are hillsiding and can’t reach both outer grips.

Side hilling and transferring your weight.

Partial trade for a pit/support talon? :flipoff2:

If it wasn't for wanting to do the snow kit, I'd lobe a 350, everything I've read says you'll even want more power than a 450, snow eats power like sand. So I'd rather start with a 450 or 500, then mod from there (turbo would be so sick) or the 300 has to potential for the 500 kit and or turbo :evil::laughing:

Those 350s are a great ride. I've ridden one, it is a hoot. Plenty of power in stock form.

The one I've ridden was great in stock form until you hit them main road. It's really a street legal dirt bike. It shook pretty bad at 65.

Snow mobiles are rare in Kansas. When I was a kid my Step Uncle stored a pair of John Deere snow mobiles at out house. I was probably 6 years old my brother and cousin got them going and I rode with them in the snowy wheat field. It was fun from what I remember. They were Silver with Orange decals I think. I know they were Silver.

Me and a friend were talking about them with an old farmer he said back in the 70s it snowed here more. He said John Deere and Allis Chalmers both had snow mobiles. He said if you bought a new combine the would give you a free snow mobile. He said the Allis Chalmers were faster than the John Deeres

Fixed that small issue with these....

It also has a full FMF titanium exhaust, 350 SXF cam and a fuel tuner. It cruises at 70 no problem.

Here’s what I have in my mutt fleet a 1980 Yamaha exciter 440 . 1996 Arctic Cat zrt 600 and 2008 Snow hawk 800. Also have a z120 that’s been thru the family need to bust that out if we get any snow here in S.E. Michigan

If you live in a log cabin too, I'll be too jealous to like you at all.

I've never seen that around here and now I know something to make myself seem knowledgeable in a real world conversation. Thanks you guys.

I haven't owned a sled for about 10 years (aside from this old Polaris Indy Trail 488 fan-cooled I got last year - but that's just to run my dog along the hydro line behind my house.)

I want to get a couple newer machines for my son and I to ride this winter. I'm going to look at two Arctic Cats this weekend. They're both 2013 with low miles. There's an F1100 and an XF1100, plus a nearly new trailer for them. One owner, older couple and the guy sounds like he maintained them well and didn't thrash them. I like that they're 4-stroke and should last a long time. I can't count how many 2-strokes I've seen blow up over the years.

Anyone have any experience with these models? Anything I should pay special attention to when I look at them?
