The Snowmobile Thread

Spent last week up in the County, 1100 miles on the sleds
visited the now closed Loring AFB ( B52 Hanger) eastern boarder trail and the beer stores of the surrounding area.
(me far right)

Another weekend spent up at 10000 feet. Had around 2 feet of fresh snow and rode out today in white out conditions. Guessing we'll see another 2-3 feet before we get back up in 2 weeks.

Sad news about 7 miles north from the cabin though. Hearing there was a avalanche on Saturday and last report was they still hadn't recovered the person. Have the avalanche gear, wear the gear, and know how to use the gear.

First trip to the UP did not disappoint. We were supposed to ride all day today and come home in the morning, but they are supposed to be getting an ice storm tonight and then 3-6” of snow on top of it. We decided to leave this afternoon instead of chancing getting stranded up there.

I’ll definitely go back next winter.

I'm investing heavily in 120's now. 3yo son and 5yo daughter were doing okay taking turns, but had to pickup another one thats a 'mod'. Able to go bombing through the bush with them now, been a few years since I have been able to get out at all and its wonderful.

Got someone coming to look at mine. Didn't make it out once this season. Horrible season here in CNY. We got like 7" of wet heavy shit last night and it's already melting. Trails have no base and water holes everywhere.

20 years old sled, I was getting beat up on the trails. Wanted to keep it as a vintage novelty, but I'd rather have the space and cash right now.

Had a blast. First heat race took 5th which put me in the lcq. In the lcq I go the hole shot and stayed in first until the last whoop before the table top checkered flag. I hit the fucking kill switch :homer:. Got it fired back up and took 3rd. Enough to get put in the back row of the feature, unsure of what I got in feature 6th/7th place or so it was chaos :lmao:. Tons of fun. Will be back next year.

The sno scoot did ok. The corners he could pass the bigger sleds in the straights he got smoked.

I brought the zip ties to toss under the kill switch I was in a hurry and forget to do it. :homer:
I had to laugh my smartcar made a appearance there.

This was a random c class heat. These guys were going pretty slow.

My kill switch is relocated. Nothing worse than getting stuck on a nice steep rock face and getting buried because your chest hit the damn switch.
Lots of guys put a momentary kill switch on their mountain sleds to so it'll just be a quick stumble if it gets whacked.

Kill switches have to go when vintage racing. Last race i was in I got into a battle with a guy where we kept driving by and smacking each other's kill switch. Cost us both a lot of ground, but became quite the hilarious game.

Yeah it was 100% my fault. I even intended to Put a zip tie under it so it couldn’t get pushed.

My employee got first in his class b heat and took second in the feature. Not bad for a first time racing. Especially since there were 90+ sleds in that class. Because of the finish he got put in the king of the beater race. He ended up wiping out pretty good in that race.

Definitely gonna have to take this more seriously next year. I might have to change over to an enticer so the sled is a little smaller and lighter. Good times.

IDK, I've got an et340 and an ex440 mod and while the et is my favorite ride, the ex is faster. Its probably less than 10lbs heavier than the ex and has quite a bit more power.
Can you run studs there? I am going to try to run my ex in 3-lakes next year and all their categories are studless.

No studs here either.

Many moons ago a local plumber who raced sleds would take a 440 and cut the fins down so the 340 tin would fit over it and drop the 440 into the 340 Enticer. He would stay just far enough in the lead as to not draw suspicion to him. A few years later I bought a 440 Exiter (79) and that thing had like a second gear, was a great drag sled. It was only bored a little bit over.

Well thats his fault
If you would see the 16 sleds all fighting for a 3 sled max width corner you realize why studs are bad. Also guys would be going another 10-15mph faster around the track and there would be more serious injuries.

The local race here I used to race in had no problems with studs. Odd

Seems like the angled plugs would have been a dead giveaway?

I want to make my ss540 into an ss650 with the old school big bore kit that uses dt360 pistons. It would be 650ccs, but look just like the stock ss440 engine.

Just got back from Maine, first time there, it was pretty awesome. Stayed in Millinocket, tried to pick a central location. Turns out almost every restaurant/bar closes at 7 or 8 PM in the town, had to eat frozen pizza some days. /https://data.irate4x4.com/assets/smilies/laughing.gif

Rode out to the trains, couple of abandoned locomotives from 1933.

Found some potential project material, parked in the middle of nowhere. :grinpimp:

Cool scenery.

On the morning of the first big mileage day, the trail out of town closed due to logging. This forced us to drive through town, then take a few wrong turns trying to make it back to the main trail. The sled was starting to get a bit warm during all this, and all of a sudden felt like it dropped a cylinder or two, and was misfiring. Checked/changed plugs, but determined it to be the stater that shat the bed. Threw some snow on the mag housing, and 10 minutes later it came back to life. Since the day was just starting, I turned back to base camp and the other guys continued on.

Luckily I keep an oversized tote of spare parts on hand at all times, standard procedure for driving a Cat.

IMG_20230227_123154948x.jpg

Had a spare aftermarket stator to swap in, not the happiest it's chinese made, but supposedly RM Stator is better than the other generic ones... We'll see I guess.

Got that all swapped in, and was back in action. The other guys made it to the air force base and the border trail, but after getting a late start, and blowing a belt along the way, their ride back was getting late. I ended up running chase truck to deliver fuel at midnight 50 miles out so they could get back.

The one-ton-tabby cat was back in operation, took it out for a run and new stator seemed to be working well. Took time to check jetting with the warming temps, need all the help I can get trying to get fuel economy...

Next big mileage day was to make it to Ft. Kent and Madawaska and back. Trails were in nice shape and was able to make good time. Signage and mapping of the trails were not always the greatest in some areas, but was able to make it up north without much trouble.

Had to get some real food, gas station combos and redbull was getting old...

IMG_20230301_154644024x.jpg

Was able to finally break 400 miles in a day! For the most part the trails were nice, couple areas with some rough patches, and the twisty woods sections take some time to get through.

Took it a bit easier after that, went to see the B-52 bomber crash site.

On the way home stopped in to a New Hampshire's Liquor store, it had it's own exit on the highway.
