The Rental Truck on tons - 1999 Tacoma

where might one obtain those grey arrow shaped corner jigs?

JV Thanksgiving 2023 was a good ol' fashion time, truck did good. Did sxs stuff the first two days with the old man and his new can-am (not the one in the video lol). Did some classic turkey claw laps and then a sun bonnet night ride. A buddy with a crawler came out for just one night so I didn't run too many trails but did lots of open desert and easier trail miles with the fam with no crazy issues for the truck so it was good. The manual trans did okay as long as I kept it revving but it could be way better, no where near the low my dual cases are but that was to be expected. Im eye-balling the atlas on my shelf for a different slow moving build...

Notes for whats needed next, air bumps (already got delivered today :smokin:), hand throttle, better lights, better rear bumps, hydro assist, SKID PLATES - my bell housing has a kiss mark from a rock after the night ride

Is that a 3rd row seat you've got ratchet strapped to the bed? :lmao:

Needed a new p/s pump for KOH, decided to go with a PSC setup, also decided last minute to throw a ram on the axle too so I scrambled a bit for parts for that. Ram is getting put on this weekend, pump and res got put on last weekend.

No drilling for me on this set up, I did have to get an allen head bolt and shave it down to fit through the pulley. Not 100% stoked on the res placement. I want it higher but that would mean cutting a hole in the hood. We will see how it handles with the ram. Works good as is but could be better I feel.

Parts:

PSC Kit: Power Steering Pump & Remote Fluid Reservoir Kit for 1996-2002 Toyota 3.4L SKU: PK1235 Power Steering Pump & Remote Fluid Reservoir Kit for 1996-2002 Toyota 3.4L
Allen Bolt: McMaster-Carr
Power Steering Pump Bracket Kit: SKU 301077-KIT

Before

The  told me to hit the mud pit with the windows down, it was a pretty solid New years party to say the least

After cleaning and a little New Floor in A Can™ shes looking better

chays2464 also sold me his rear bumper which will be kept alive to be dragged over many more rocks

Glad the bumper lives on to keep getting smashed!

That's sweet PSC has a kit for the 3.4 motor now, when I built mine they didn't have that kit around so I had to piece it together. That resi location should be fine, Im going on 2 yrs with mine and zero issues, its been on its side a few times and never been starved for fluid or had the pump whine. Just make sure you got a big cooler for the fluid

Yeah I didn't know they had it either but found it when looking up the part numbers off your build lol. That's good to know about your pump, I added a cooler beforehand since I knew the 40s would hurt the stock pump, this one here: Amazon.com I have the same on the '81 but this is a bit different lol

Got the ram mounted and transmission skidplate put in. Acquiring the ram last minute was a whole snafu but I got it figured. I was waiting on a Ruff stuff order with their cross member mounting tabs to make the skidplate not one piece with the transfer case mount but they must be backed up with orders for KOH cause its not shipped yet and its been a bit and I need it done by this week for KOH so I ended up with this one.

My buddy plasma cut the AR400 plate for the skid and also the cool little bonus name plate that adds at least 5 HP to the truck :smokin:

KOH 2024 was a good time, Chocolate Thunder at night was wilder than ever holy hell

We ran sunbonnet and blueberry. Sunbonnet re-bent my driveshaft so now I have zero driveshaft vibration again which worked out sick. Blew the soft clutch line dropping down the end of sunbonnet, wrapped it with ductape and a hose clamp and it worked for the way back and the morning wash run to turkeyclaw to watch the shitshow that was the start of the EMC race. The stock transfer-case gearing is a pain in the ass coming from the dual case pickup world. Will probably live with it for now, I have a different project that I am wanting to save money for and not keep snowballing this truck for now, but we'll see

Saw these cool dudes in the turkey claw parking lot- I mean race course:flipoff2:

Did the rear shock hoops the not right way the first time to make a trip, then never went back and added support like I should have, then ripped one of the hoops off on a birthday night ride :homer:

If you look closely you can see the issue

I'll be tieing in the upper part of the hoops to the rear cage when I get that done, I got a 4x innovations cage for it to save some time not bending up my own.

I like that skid off the WFO crossmember, what thickness is the tube and how much space you leave between it and the transmission?

It's .120 wall tubing, I left a few inches of clearance for it to bend upwards a bit if it hits hard, not sure on the exact amount but I planned for it to bend over time

I need to copy that skid plate. Figured it's time after I knocked a chunk of trans casting off on my last trip out:laughing:
I saw his skid design and thought the same thing, I've been mulling that over for a minute and really like what he did haha.

Yea, I have been looking at different designs and even thinking flat belly. The reality is it will be a hack version of this welded to my trail gear crossmember a week before a trip:laughing:

Started putting a cage into the truck as well, no exo cage this time around like Ol' Yella. Will have to learn how to wheel without bashing my body panels in (...yeah right :homer::beer:)

4xInnovations cage kit, liking it so far

I'm going to clear coat over the dirt to keep it looking nice fyi
20241026_161622.jpg

Not welded in yet, should I keep the seat pads down for use? Idk how comfortable the back will be with the tubes across the back rest, might take them off and weld it in then pop them back in to use

If you actually want to have people back there, you could ditch the X. Obviously you'd loose strength, but the tacoma cab it's self is a shit load stronger than a 1st or 2nd gen anyway, so it would still be very safe imo.

I agree. Leave the X out for now. If in a couple years you find no need for the back seats you could add it in then.

If im putting a cage in its going to be done right enough to hold up to a big roll so the X is staying, I will be keeping the seat pads in but folded up like Slander for stuff rattling around. Realistically I will only have gear and beer in the back seats, so in the off chance I need to give a 3rd person a ride back to camp or the trail head they can deal with it, it'll beat riding in the bed of my '81 like we've done :lmao:

Plus I've already welded it in

For those looking at doing a 4xInnovations cage, the C and B pillars can tip forward enough to weld the tops and sides, I ratchet strapped the B pillar legs together to get some better clearance

I had their cage in my 99 4runner, I hit my head on it all the time and legs on the a pillar toobs. You should rework the A pillars so they go behind the dash if you can. It gets old trying to swing your legs around those tubes

I'm going to try and lower my seat a bit to help with my head hitting, and thats good to know about the A pillar, I'll take a look at moving it further forward

I've always hated any internal cage Toyota I've ridden in. I hit my head enough with no cage, then add that vertical bar right in the way and it's infuriating.

I hated mine so much in the 4runner that I sold the rig vs cut it out and recage it lol
