What's new

The 3D printer thread

Still haven’t jumped into the 3dp world but I keep finding reasons too. I don’t really want to tinker I want to use it.

What I'm finding is cad is a big part of it. I'm brushing up on that. Being able to draw what you want is half the battle.

The new printers have no tinkering is what I have been finding.

First thing I designed and printed. Need to test fit when I can walk.

I’m a diehard PrusaSlicer fan, but Orca is just better all around. Way more perimeters to fiddle with in Orca and once you use it’s built-in printer tuning I just get better prints.
This. That was all I used when I was still running Creality machines. Way more user friendly, better UI, faster and smoother, and in my testing even with the same settings, produced better quality prints.

x1c has

Better Screen - I’ve used the screen maybe 10 times in the year I’ve had mine. Everything is done via app or on pc.

Better Camera - p1s has camera that works perfectly acceptable, all you are trying to do is check on the print.

Lidar and spaghetti detector (also used for leveling) - only thing I can see as a possible plus.

Hotter bed - have yet to need it on the p1s.

Ships with hardened gears and nozzle - easy upgrade on p1s if needed.

Faster CPU/more resources - don’t see how this would affect anything.

Aluminum shell instead of plastic - again has no practical impact.

Ability to use X1+ open source firmware

All things being equal I think you get much more value for your dollar getting an ams or second ams instead of the x1c vs p1s.
Awesome comparison. I am looking into getting a first printer in the next few months. Bambu seems to be the go to now. I was wondering about the differences, I think I'm going to go the p1s with ams.

Happy so far. Man the x1c prints so much faster than the ender 3!

Radio bezel v2 done.

Played with 2 colors. Something selected weird, it kept the back of the hump green, except one layer.

Daughter also printed a dinosaur.... :lmao:

Well I went to Microcenter Saturday, about an hour from me. Buddy of mine said they have about 10 different printers set up there all running all the time. When we got there, none of them were running. But I decided to look at the interfaces, and I just went ahead and started the 4 Bambu printers on projects. My kid was freaking out, saying, are you supposed to do that? I just looked at him and shrugged, not like there was a sign saying not to do that. Impressive machines. They had a A1, A1mini, PIS, and the Carbon model. All 4, super easy to figure out quickly, and just ran whatever was in the list. People started to gather to watch them operate. Talked with a customer that had been printing for about a year for a long while and asked all the stupid newbie questions. And now I really want two machines, one for me, one for the kiddo. We can do separate projects, together projects and bond together. He's the one kid I have the hardest time connecting with, I think 3D printing might be the ticket.

So profit sharing dropped yesterday, and I'm going back Sunday to pick up 2 of these machines:

One for the garage, one for his room, Christmas present. Also going to DIY a desk together for him to have something to run it on. I'm flipping excited, now the problem is I'm not going to want to wait till Christmas!

I don't want to pay for the extended warranty. Is it really needed? I've never done extended warranties on anything and it's only bit me once in my life, on my current Iphone14, where the damn cameras, flashlight, everything quit working. But I've saved thousands over the years, so I'm still way ahead. The 3d printer is tech I really don't know much about. Would yall get it?

How much is the insurance? Pretty much everything is replaceable or upgradable, if you use a microcenter card I believe you automatically get a two year warranty, at least that was the case on computer stuff.

Biggest hurdle is just learning the software and what it wants to be happy, well for making models. For just printing models already designed it’s set and forget.

It's $200 for 2 years, $250 for 3 years.

The software will be a hurdle for sure, I don't have any experience with 3D stuff. I have a lot of 2D autocad experience, but my career took a different path when my company upgraded to solidworks and I don't even have it on my computer. But I'm excited to learn and grow.

I would probably pass on that price your looking at 25% of the cost of the machine. I would do some searching on Reddit bambu for problems but I haven’t had any problems in 800 hours that weren’t self inflicted via poor slicer settings or bad filament.

If you get two p1s with ams I would suggest putting them somewhere together, I think having it in a bedroom would not be a good idea. It’s kind of noisy and the sounds are not natural so I think it would keep you awake if it was running at night.

Also probably pick up an ams hub so if you wanted you could connect both ams to a single printer if you wanted to run more than 4 colors.

For filament just get the large 10kg plus pack of spools in basic colors. You will end up using them either for prototyping or in models.

For consumables all I have had to replace is the hot end at around 600 hours, you may want a smaller .2 nozzle if your son is going to be making figurines and whatnot.

Good thoughts. We'll probably start with it in his room, but might move it to the garage beside mine.

Ok, gotcha...I hear you guys. They'll both have to live in the garage then. It's not climate controlled, cold in the winter, hot in the summer. Does that pose any challenges for the filament and machine?

With ams you can put desiccant in it and it will act as a dry box but I would want it to be somewhere with a relatively consistent temp. I have mine in the office, you could put them in a closet or basement if you have the room. I would google around, could also just be below a counter in a family or living room.

You want it somewhere that doesn't swing in temp, it will cause warping and adhesion issues. Filament is easy, just get a dry box.

Might want to find somewhere like an office or other inside room. Or put them in the bedroom and move the kid to the garage

MyX1C has been running around the clock for 2 years straight now. I didn’t get the extended warranty on any of my machines. Worst issue I’ve had is worn Bowden tubes and the occasional clogged nozzle. All regular maintenance items. I’m up to 8 Bambu lab printers all with similar results. The X1C with 2 AMS units, 3 P1Ps with an Ams each, a spool fed P1P, an A1 mini, and during the Black Friday sale I just added an A1 and an A1 combo

Why did you get the A1s?
Mostly price point. Needed to up my production some more and I’ve been hearing good things about the A1 from other printers at events. I’ve liked my a1 mini that I picked up in the spring to take to events so I thought I would give the full size A1 a try. I’ve been quite happy with them so far. Been churning out prints non stop on both of them for over a week so far.

I got one for the same reasons
we share one, sometimes I have to wait to use it, but for the most part it sits

As cool as it sounds, I would just get one before you go get another one

Well I already fucked that up. Got two Bambu P1S printers with AMS and 5 spools of different colored PLA filament in the closet waiting on Christmas. That's the sucky part. Got to wait 6 weeks to open the up the toys! I think I have enough projects to keep both of them spinning, even if the kiddo loses interest. Building out a workstation in a closet I cleaned out over the weekend, so at least i'll be making progress toward it in the meantime.

I had mine wrapped and where the tree would go before Thanksgiving
My kid did not find it as funny as I did:grinpimp:
You two will have fun with them

I would get more spools, they usually go on sale during black Friday and cyber Monday. You can never have enough black and white then you end up using a bunch of the colors you wouldn’t think in models and odds and ends. I used up a bunch of pink because I didn’t think I would use it then needed to get an extra spool for a model.

Oops. Guess I get fawk around with the hair dryer tonight to get this off of the P1P cover. (Happened on an overnight print, didn't see it until a couple of hours after it happened). That's the silicone sock stuck in the middle of the blob, the nozzle itself is just fine.
