The 3D printer thread

A month ago or so...I bought a resin printer (posted in the sore dick deals thread in Shop and Tools) and as expected, threw it right in the trash after the second attempt.

Wife is crafty and boy is going to an engineering type high school next year where they 3D print lots of shit, so I killed 2 bird with one stone and bought a Bambu P1S for mothers day / boy's birthday....showed up Saturday...they got after it and made a tugboat, some stupid turtles, and some other trinkety bullshit. I told them for every 2 useless trinkets they need to make something useful. About 9 prints in came out great....now nothing sticks to the print plate. Cleaned it with lense cloths (diluted alcohol?), and a few other idea she found online.

I can't imagine a $700 printer would come with a plate surface treatment that doesn't work for more than a day....although maybe I'm wrong. She's played with plate temps a bit too...no dice. Any ideas? Running standard PLA filament.

The best part about this is I bought it for them, so it's their problem now....not mine.

Not sure what build surface that Bambu has, but on my Creality I use a glue stick on the included build plate.

PLA will stick to it well enough that I've had it warp and lift the build plate sheet up off the base (also turns out the magnetic base can lose its magnetism and drive you insane trying to figure out warping issues)

edit looks like it has a textured PEI plate. I am running one of those in my Creality now and just wipe it down with rubbing alcohol whenever stuff starts to no longer stick to it. I have noticed stuff stays stuck to it when hot and just falls off once it cools down. What temp are they running the bed at?

Should just need to wipe with alcohol occasionally. Is it just a single spool or did they try other spools. Could also be slicer settings. All of the problems I’ve had with my p1s are input related, bad filament or bad slicer settings. Have yet to have a hardware issue, I probably should check the nozzle at I’m now approaching 700 hours of print time.

Wash it with dish soap and a wet paper towel, dry it with clean paper towels, handle it by the plate edges, don't touch the plate. Fingerprints transfer grease, as long as there's no gouges in the plate you're fine.

After a print if there's residue wipe it with 91% alcohol and a paper towel.

Looks like she found a couple boogers hanging off of the hot end....musta been grabbing the work. Got that cleaned up and it seems to be OK through a couple prints she ran last night.

Thanks.

If that’s the case I’m betting they aren’t changing the infill pattern and using the stock grid setting. DO NOT use grid infill. It will cause exactly this issue among others. My go to is Gyroid infill for trinkets and toys and such. Anything that needs strength I use triangle or honeycomb infill for.

been watching that project. Unsure if it's a pipe dream still or for real.

If I wanted a printer that worked great right out of the box what's the recommendation? I saw the 2 on this or the previous page.

Current go to hot shit seems to be anything from Bambu. Il

The A1 mini is on sale right now for $249
Yep. I’m actually fixing to pick one up in the next week or two for my event printer when I don’t have power access. Should run for quite a while on my portable power packs with the hot bed turned off and it’s smaller then the Edner 3V2 I have been using for that purpose.

Thoughts on a P1P that was converted to P1S with the kit from Bambu? He's asking $875 with the AMS. Not sure I really need it.....

Hmm not sure about the mini unit? What's the benefit over the bigger machines? Or what does it offer?

I'm sorta considering their X1E

Amy’s is good for multimaterial as well as multicolor. Using PLA as a support material for PETG for example. The P1S is a good machine, only real benefit over the P1P is that it’s enclosed which is only crucial for certain materials.

The mini is an old school bed slinger. Its main advantage is that it’s cheap while still offering bambu speed and quality. It was also the first unit with the Ams lite. I’m mostly buying it do to it’s small size as it will be easy for me to transport to shows and events. I love my X1C

what is your definition of 'out of the box'
as in they work, or no assembly required?

I see the new P1S with the ams for $950. Idk what the used market is for these.

On sale around Christmas p1s with ams was 850 or so. It was right around 1k shipped with tax and a 8 spools of pla. I would think I would want to be in the 6-700 range for a used machine.

work with no screwing around. I'm okay doing some assembly but don't want to be screwing around with that either.

I got enough build and design it projects.
I have a Creality CRS5
they are broken down for shipment, but it was a basic assembly. My kid was about 8 at the time and managed by herself.
I wouldn't worry too much about it, just order one:grinpimp:

At this point I would get either a $99 ender (if MC still does those) or step up to a Bambu.

Unless you want to roll your own - the voron was fun but it also was a project in itself

A1mini $199 combo $349
A1 $339 combo $489

P1 $499
P1s $559 combo $849

X1 $1049 combo $1299

Hopefully the ams goes on sale as well I’ve been wanting to grab a second one.

Naturally. I just bought an A1 mini for shows and events last week. And it looks like no sale on the P1P

I want the AMS for my P1S. Really hoping for a sale.

This sale is fucking great. Highly recommend the P1S. For the past 8 years I have had printers, the P1S is finally what I truly wanted out of a printer without making egregious requests.

The AMS isn’t slated to unfortunately. In fact I don’t think it ever has. Last one I bought I used banked up Makerworld points for some gift cards to cut the price down.

Yeah I know. Kind of fell like an ass doing that honestly. I still will, but honestly it’s not their fault I bought it before they decided to have a sale.
