What's new

State of housing costs in the US. Where does it end?

You believe yourself to be a conservative, but are comparing yourself to the freak leftists around you. You have hoisted your points of view around this place openly for years. You are not conservative, not by a long shot. Stay the fuck west of Nevada please.
1st - I do not believe myself to be a conservative.

2nd- Politics have nothing to do with why I would never leave California. I'm one of those people who has, in fact, sufred and skied in the same day. :flipoff2:

Some of my techs here are making a little over $80k/year. They're younger dudes starting out in their career, but none of them can afford a house within an hour's drive of here and have to rent.

We've also got some younger software engineers who are making 6 figures and a few of them commute about 45 minutes to an hour each way because they can't afford housing any closer.

I'm lucky in that I bought my house in 2009 while a lot of those dudes were still going to school. It's nothing fancy(1,600 sq ft with a detached garage and a small yard), but it would be tough to afford it now.

Yay California housing prices.

Bs, they just want to live in a bigger nicer house then they can afford locally. Anyone making 80k could have easily bought the house Mary's mom just bought and had money to spare. It is 99% turn key and maybe 15 blocks from your work.

The guys buying right now are buying in Soledad, Greenfield, or King City. They would definitely have bought closer if they could swing it. I'll give you that there are parts of Salinas that are pretty sketchy and they probably avoided those.

I can't speak to all of their finances(many went to a cheaper cal state school, but probably still have school loans to pay off, no idea what else), but they've talked about trying to get housing in Salinas and not finding any. One of them just got evicted from his rental here in Salinas because he was close living there for 1 year and the landlord was thinking about selling. He was motivated to find housing in town, but got nothing.

If I lived in you area, or flat bill tractor guy, I would never want to move either. Fucking gorgeous there and perfect weather 365
Well, not perfect. There's usually about 1 week a year that is hot enough for me to consider putting AC in my house and then it's gone before I actually pull the trigger on it. :flipoff2:

80k salary buying a house in that area............ easily? Man, I am gonna call BS.

Now, I am calling BS on the demo I am talking about. 25 year old that has managed to save say 20k (and that is a stretch). I am not talking someone moving up with a mountain of equity to rollover. That kid is paying PMI for sure on top of today's interest rates and Prop 13 doesn't help at all as it's new loan.

Can't see it but I could be wrong.

Man, I pull over and shower just driving by those places!! Talk about your shitty areas to live.

There are rural areas outside of King City that are nice, as long as you're find with living far from everyone else.

Soledad and Greenfield don't work for me, but maybe if I was brown and spoke Spanish it would? I dunno.

I've come to realize that that shit doesn't actually matter day to day if you're not a gun guy (and none of them follow the laws so it doesn't really matter to them either). The state will impoverish or kill you over capricious shit in a red state with good gun laws just the same (or even more readily in a lot of cases). If you do have to defend yourself it's a simple question of who the local prosecutor is which has to do more with the local area than the overall state.

If you want to be one of those boot licking "law abiding citizen" pieces of shit the red states are absolutely better but if you want to obey the bare minimum of laws the blue states can be better because there's more lawlessness to blend into.

NH is a little better. VT and ME are about the same or a little worse, depends on what kind of property you own and how your income is structured. The northeast in general has high taxes

If you're gonna pull shit out of your ass to try and make a point you should pick subjects that don't come with fancy infographics that even the dumbest boomers can understand.

Tax-Burden-by-State_Site.jpg

Ha! Good one. Lived in mass-a-chu-shits for over 10 years and college at UNH. Family still lives in NH, so I have the duty of visiting semi-regularly to experience the futher slide downhill of that shithole you live in. Add in all the "fees" you pay to that tax burden and pop up a new graphic.

Oh and you can hate on boomers all you want, I isnt one. I just like to point out the ridiculousness of your dumbass accusatory statements.:flipoff2:

But, I thought all those brown people migrants were significant contributors to our country? No?

Here's a quick snapshot from today. Note the 200k and 100k offerings on that map are mobile homes in a trailer park.

What is wrong with living in a mobile home for a couple years and working your way up? Are people expecting to buy their forever home first time out in their 20s/30s? If so, no wonder all the defeatism about it being impossible to buy a house.

My son bought his first home. 750 sqft of 100 year old awesomeness in the county enclave of a rural town. Fixing it up while there and is going to stepping stone into something better in a few years. Most his age turn up the nose, but they are also stuck paying rent with no out.

I'm not saying it's impossible to buy a house around here, just that it's expensive. You're going to see a smaller return on your investment on a mobile home vs a small starter house.

And?

What the fuk is this thread all about? It is so impossible to buy a home, well except for, you know, those poor people houses....

The only real down of mobile home life is generally you don't own the land it's on. At that point you may be better off living in a rv you can move easily.

There isnt a single house for sale in my town under $200k that is not in an old folks community or is a condo. Mobile homes on 2ac will fetch $400k. Its asinine. We were listed as one of the best town to retire to and all the big outside money came in and bought up vacation and retirement homes. Couple that with investment firms buying up all the sub 600k homes for rentals to capitalize on the steep rental market here and its just insane. VRBO/AIRBNB are regulated by the county and no new permits are being offered for them and havent been for a few years. My 2600 sq/ft build on 20 acres is appraised at $900k and its a modified spec home:laughing:

Nothing if you don't mind paying that kind of money for an home on land that you don't own.

And the people who generally live in trailer parks. That said I've known people who live in nice parks.

They're harder to resell. If you're looking for a starter home that you plan to leverage into a larger home later, mobile homes aren't that great. That is if you even actually own the land it's parked on and aren't leasing.
