Shop Truck turned Race Truck SORC Tech in Shit-shat

Mineral spirits will take it off too. Soak it for a while and hit it with pressure washer,

Well, the race happened. I had a blast, intend to enter for next year. The truck performed very well with the mods I did. Pic dump to follow

Trip up to arnold took 6 hours, no hurry drove 36 across kansas then north in nebraska straight up to arnold. found the lake and picked a spot, learned that the lake has a shower house, so that was a plus. Made the no shitting in the camper rule doable. Neighbors were from up the road in omaha and had a Huracan sitting under that cover. I had planned to bring our dual sports along for something to do and canceled that last minute, wouldn't you know the first thing we see when we get there are a couple husky ds. Turns out we didnt have time to really go ride so leaving them home was good.

Thursday morning was tech, which was a lot easier than I had imagined and stressed about. Then over to numbers and stickers.

The town/race fed us steak friday night, then it was off to a quiet place to study my course notes. Having never really raced anything with more than two wheels, I didn't want to f this up. No crashing, no looking like a jackass. We had driven the road 3 times since getting there in the middle of the week and took a lot of notes. You're not supposed to go at race speeds on the county road but I had to run it up a couple times just to see what the truck would do. the road is R.O.U.G.H. capital rough. But the qa1's cranked up and made it really good at speed. I bumped from the 80 class to the 90mph class on several comments I would be bored at 80. They were right, the bump was good. I was staged behind last years winner in the 80 class, Jessica. I won't guess her age, you can do that on your own! She was pretty cool gal, drove in from Nevada to do this. She was in the C6 in front of me.

I acutally caught her in the race. We started 30 seconds apart and were encouraged to talk with our competitors in front and behind us should one catch another. I figured there was no way in hell I'd catch her so I didn't talk to her about what to do. Turns out it wasn't necessary as when she saw me back there she took off!

I screwed up and left my go pro on from the day before and the battery was dead. No race video. here is a still from the live feed start.

Oh, and the absolute best part of the experience? Sitting in line saturday morning for the race, a young mom with her two kids walks by and I hear the little boy say "Look mom, a truck!" That made it all worthwhile for me, that's why I built the truck. In a sea of corvettes(like 56 out of 136 entries), that little boy will remember the truck.

So results. Honestly I am a little disappointed in my shoot out mph. I had hoped to be north of 120mph. But it was pointed out to me, by the car in front of me (a bone stock c5 car that ran 124) that I was only 7mph away from that car. A lighter, more aero car and I wasn't too far off its speed. A little shot of nitrous next year should make that up. :lmao:

The SORC was another story. I really tried my best to get it as close to the 90mph mark and I think I did pretty good. Finished 5th out of 24 in the 90mph class and was only .069 of a mph away from perfect! Or, 00.01.705 seconds off perfect. 1.705 seconds. Crazy lucky to be that close for my first time.

I tried to keep both legs as close to prefect. On the north leg, about half way up, my navigator told me I was 20 seconds or so ahead of schedule. Right about the same time I caught the vette in front of me. At that point it was time management and forcing myself to go slower. Crossed the north finish right as the clock hit 19 minutes and 8 seconds.

Staging for the south run, hoping to match the north run results. talking with jessica while waiting, she tells me she was looking at the 80 time from the year prior and that is why she was going so slow for me to catch her. She ogt it figured out and finished right behind me in the overall.

Again half way through the run heading south, my navigator tells me I am way to fast. 20+ seconds. So it is back to cruising speed to bring my mph average back down. With a couple miles to the finish I ask for my time and have him switch to the stop watch timer I was running on my phone. It said we had 44 seconds left out of the 17:44 and I could see the finish. the rules say you cannot go less than 20mph below your target so I shut it down to 72ish and held it there. the truck behind had caught me by this point(they were trying to make time too!) but they stayed behind me. We counted off the seconds and crossed the finish with one second left on the timer. whew, that was close.

I think we did pretty good, it was a blast to do. Already planning next years race, maybe I will bump up a speed class !

The 2nd truck in the race, these guys Brad and Matt out of iowa, had just built this land speed sonoma out of iowa. Had a blue print 6 liter and sounded nasty. they started behind me in the 90mph sorc. very fresh build, they did good and finished! they were still working on the tune when they got there. set up for twins, but ran n/a for this week. Cool guys and fun to talk to. The 3rd truck was a race veteran, ray smelich. He usually runs a 300z car but with a last minute motor problem ran his 6.0L ford diesel! 2004 F250 crew 4x4. What a sight.

Cool thread, sounds like a blast.
The whole community comes together for this event. There is something to do every day/night, they kept us fed, and put on a great race. There are 3 races during the week, I did 2 of them, will try for 3 next year. If there is a negative, its the entry process. it is popular enough that if you don't get in on the first day entry opens you have to go in a lottery.

Cool truck and looks like a fun event.

I like forms of motorsports like this- you can build your vehicle without totally ruining it for daily use. Drag racing, KOH, etc the build time : use time ratios are horrible. You can actually enjoy this thing day to day and it isn't totally destroyed after a race.

twice now this thread has made me go hunt FB market for a truck to build up. Twice now, i remember they're all rusted to shit around me or way too expensive for a base model 5.3 work truck:homer:

Man if you want to go race something like this, buy a c5. you can get right in to racing for a fraction of what I spent on my truck(and its not much after all anyhow!) I learned that the vettes have a "factory cage" and with just the addition of a harness bar can get in the higher speed classes. To put a full cage in my truck will be a lot of work and money.(I'm going to do it anyhow so I can run the mile shootout though!) But that kind of goes against what and why we are here right? Build that truck to be different and let your flag fly!

I bought a sway bar kit and put it in the rear. Made a huge difference in how the bed felt in corners. All of my testing before the race, was the on ramp heading home from work! Lowered with qa1s, tires and sway bars, this truck stayed really planted. Corvette planted? Probably not. But it worked ok. Nevermind that rusty diff, I was playing with junkyard diffs and gearing before the race. Settled on 3.73 gearing and thought it worked really well with the 4L80. In the long 4 mile straights were I could run up to my tech speed of 120 I ran in 4th gear, lock up off. The rest of the race I stayed in 3rd and listened to that LS sing. Several different people commented on how good it sounded flying by.

Thanks for throwing some gas on my fire!
I leave in a couple weeks for the Silver State Classic. It is my first time running it, and I am really looking forward to it. It has been on the bucket list for a long time.
I am running in the 110 mph class, and the 1/2 mile shootout. Hoping for 150ish in the 1/2 mile.

150 in the half? Lets hear some details of your car

I may be over reaching, I will find out in a couple weeks. I am pretty confident I will make 140.
521 cu/in, 4 bolt CJ block, AFR 295 heads, mild solid roller, forged bottom end, Sniper EFI. 542hp 572tq on pump gas at the wheels. 4 speed toploader and a gear vendor OD, 3.50 gears.
Street or Track coilover front end, TCP rack and pinion.
I have owned the car since 1982, finally got it on the road in 2017.

One last hijack/update.
The race was fantastic. I missed my tech time by 3 seconds, got 12th out of 18 in the 110mph class. There were 8 cars within 1 second of their tech time.
The official results aren't out yet, but GPS showed 143 in the half mile. I may have won that one.
I am ready to go back.

Nice! Is there any footage of the race to watch? I think I'll try to enter it next year. Cage and turbo over the winter!

It's purdy. Maybe a 150 sniper shot if you don't get where you want at the end of the 1/2?

Thanks guys.
Results were released today. I won the 1/2 mile street class at 141.456.
I put a video camera in the car. And forgot to turn it on.:homer:
No nitrous allowed.
Look me up if you make it. I will be there.
