RZR 170 race car

This is the build thread for my son’s RZR 170. We bought it used and have been enjoying it in stock form at local motocross tracks. Now it’s time to make this thing safer and race ready. A cage kit, roof, doors, bumper, window nets and nerf bars were ordered from ExtremePerformance1.

I got the cage kit, bumpers and nerf bars on. We pulled the door panels and roof off so they can get wrapped.

That's a really nice cage and it looks great color matched to the body.

We got the car all finished up. PRP seat, radio, fresh air pumper and all the safety gear. We did a local trac day with all his gear on to get the feel for driving with the HANS device. The first race was this past weekend at MidAmericaOutdoors. It was wet and cold but the kid had a great time and finished with no issues during the race.

Nope, it’s a cage kit from extreme performance 1.

Now it’s time to start working on the suspension. LoneStarRacing rear swing arm.

We got the tires yesterday. The wheels should be here soon.
WANDA AT21x7 for the front and 22s for the rear.

I picked up a set of used Walker Evans shocks to replace the stock setup.

Yea, we are still waiting on parts. We will be racing the MAO race at the end of the month. I highly recommend this race series for your kid. The organization and prep they put into these races for the kids is awesome!

My son is 7 now and will eventually be moving up in classes. It will eventually be up for sale lol.

Good on you, Pitbullcruiser ! My wife and I went out to MAO late March/early April. The kids' classes made me giddy. I don't even have a kid, but it was so damned cool watching those kids floormat it.


Off topic, but do you know if MAO ever lets us normal non-racers play around on that track? Sunday morning or something? We were in a rush to leave that day, and didn't check it out.

They come set at 15 mph. They can be adjusted to 22 mph or 29 mph with the stock setup.

I don't think so. They have signs everywhere saying absolutely no riding on the race track. That might only be during races, I am not sure.

We got the front and rear suspension all put together. Cognito plus 3” front long travel and matching rear.

We did some shake down runs locally, raced Visions at MAO and raced Ultra4 at Sturgis. Car has been working great and the kid is having a blast.

That's a pretty normal price if it's mechanically sound.

My son is 8. I believe the MidAmericaOffRoad and Ultra4 minimum age is 6.

It’s around the bottom of asking in these parts, although sometimes stock is more desirable/ worth more.

Can these be run on trails? Not necessarily crawling, but be comfortable enough going slow enough to navigate around or over smaller obstacles?

Definitely, there are lots of videos of kids trail riding 170s. They are pretty capable for 2wd go-karts.

Hunter raced the Ultra4 Nationals 170 race and got 3rd. We are now preping the car for the 2023 King of the Hammers 170 race.
