What's new

Ray Charles Tacoma build

Spent the weekend finishing up the bumps and the support brace between the cans. I ended up cutting my bump pads down another inch to get more uptravel. Currently pulling 3" of uptravel and 7 down.

I threw shocks on finally. Been running free bilsteins with no nitrogen in them for to long. I went with Fox 2.5x14 coilovers since I plan to cut off the frame and link it down the road and don't want to buy shocks twice. Gonna need to get some 90 degree fittings for the shocks so that I can mount the resis but the fab portion is done. Did a quick and dirty hoop and set the shocks up so they have around 1/2" of shaft showing at full bump.

a wheel spacer maybe your friend. that shock is crazy close
the driver side I moved in more after those pics, forgot to take more. Shocks have about 3/4" of space between the tires. I won't be using the same hoops for links, thats all gonna get cut off and I will either french into the frame or back half it

I like the crossover bar. I've always wondered how easy it would be to rip the bump mounts off that stand off the frame.
I didn't box the c channel frame on the inside cause im lazy, so hopefully this keeps everything where it needs to be. I think I will tie a kicker tube from the back of the shock hoops down to that crossbar between the bump cans

Got the shock towers finished up, added 90s to the shocks and was able to mount the resis where I wanted them. Also took out the crush sleeve in the rear axle and added a solid spacer. Swapped the Toyota flange out for a Sterling flange so I can run a 1350 ujoint

Pro tip: Yukon Ford 9" part number SK CSF9-2PIECE fits a sterling 10.5 perfectly

All I have left is to build a new drive shaft

New driveshaft is in and works great so far, no vibrations up to 75mph, gotta find a downhill to go any faster lol. Back end rides really nice with the shocks and bumps in there to

Nice man, glad to hear it balanced and running smooth. Picked up the same CV head, nice to k own there's finally parts for a toy cv head. 60mm x60mm to boot!

Cougar Butts trip report: Rained on us most of the trip but it was still a good time

Ran a lot of trails with rear steer buggies so we were out of our element but still had some fun stuff the full body trucks could do

Colin broke a tcase in half and Todd broke both hub gears and a ring and pinion. Got Todd fixed and then his hub studs sheared off on the last day

Taco had zero issues thankfully. The new driveshaft held up and the new shocks and bumps were sooo much better in the whoops. I rolled it on a dumb line cause I wasn't paying attention. Fired right up and drove out of it after getting winched back over

no real updates on the taco, its been serving as a daily and a moving vehicle. We bought a fixer upper property with 2 houses on it so I have been hauling loads back and forth to the new place. The bobbed bed still manages to fit a lot of shit in it lol

Hit the Rubicon for the 4th of July, fairly busy weekend. Took us 10 hrs to get there because a buddy got 2 trailer flats on the 5 and it was 112 degrees through the valley. Made it to the Chalet and camped for the night then hit the trail in the morning. Had 2 newbies with us, 1 in a untested Taco that he purchased 2 days before and the other guy was on a built 1st gen. Got to buck without to many issues, a buddy rolled his UTV when the motor cut out. Camped with John Webb and his crew and saw a lot of other homies out there. Spent a day hanging out at the lake and swimming, also got to bring the dog out for the trip and she did great.

On the way back my buddy rolled coming out of buck lol, got him flipped over and carried on. Came across some yotas with a broken frame so we let them borrow our Bun trail welder to get it fixed. Finally got down the hill and left Folsom at 8pm, we were 3hrs from home when Colins idler pulley blew out on the Dmax in Santa Nella at 11:30 at night. We tried to ghetto fix it but that didn't work so he got a hotel for the night and carried on in the morning. I got home at 3:30 AM lol. Taco worked flawlessly the whole trip, having air bumps and 2.5s in back really helped.

Rubicon isn't an easy trail

Sure, certain groups fill in every hole and get mild rigs through, but any given weekend, it's still a decent challenge.

Also, what it may lack in super difficulty, it makes up for in length.

Plus most of us hit every bonus line and that's where the carnage usually happens

LOL, the dudes axle tube came out of the center section, looked like the factory plug welds failed
Funny, I was on fordyce a few weeks ago and saw another jeep have the same problem. Except it broke dang near in the middle of the housing.
