What's new

New Ford Duallys are 6+ months out?

Run the numbers for 4.30 and the 19.5s
Will do, the tires are 34 ish tall I think on the 450, which queers it a little if the actual tire rolling circumference is different. I was trying to keep it the same.

That calculator is confusing AF. Top speed doesn’t matter in a towing situation.

For towing, I can’t imagine a scenario where 3.55 is better than 4.10.

Buddy has an f450 and says it pulled phenomenally well, compared to previous gen f350, and still gets 17-18mpg empty.

Unless there are licensing/tag/insurance reasons, Is therea reason to not do an f450.? “Rough ride” from the tires seems… straw man?

I have driven a 19.5 service truck for 15 years, not what I want for RVing/vacation cruising.
I don't need the capacity
I don't need the brakes
It costs more of course so if I don't deem it necessary I don't see it worthwhile to buy.
Swapping to 20" wheels with LT tires is an option but again I'm not interested in that.

That could change as my camper etc. changes but not for the 3 years I will own this truck.

current 4.10 6 speed on the left, proposed 3.55 10 speed on the right
I tow at 65 usually and run empty around 75-80.
Gonna do another one with the 4.10 and 10 speed
(updated with 31.5" tires)

Looks like the 225/70R19.5 tires are 32" tall
245/75R17 are 31.5"

Same 4.1 / 6 speed on left 4.1 and 10 speed on the right
this looks like the bad ass setup for pulling heavy, gives you better ratios than the 6 speed truck with a extra over drive. Best of both worlds.

I think you’re correct.

My 6.7/6/3.55 was fine for my needs with 35’s.

My 6.7/10/3.55 seems under geared to me.

I’m 90% sure it’s the programming… I HATE 3rd gear. HATE it. Truck insists on keeping it at 15 mph up my driveway and there are times I wonder if it’ll stall out.

I think 4.10’s would make this truck (ccsb tremor) perfect.

So your Tremor has some 35 ish tires right?
I will keep the stock dually tires so no change there.
The thing is I didn't want 4.10's when I got the current truck and now after driving it for 3 years I swore my next one will be 3.55.
The thing is gear bound, shifts to 5th in 30 feet it seems like and just is sort of brutal to road trip empty (compared to 3.55)
I don't pull super heavy anyway max is usually 24k gross.

Lastly the 31.5" tire 3.55 / 10 speed vs the 32" tall 4.30 / 10 speed
This one looks like a beast for hauling, but Prius probably has a higher top speed.
Only way I would be interested in this is with a 35"+ tire. which I added last

Correct. It has 35’s. Both trucks did.

And 24k gross is 3x more than I’ve towed with either of the trucks, so to me, that is “super heavy.” :flipoff2:

The 10-speed in tow mode is nicer than the 6… in a sense. But I still would go 4.10’s.

Compromise on 3.73? :flipoff2:

Took the wife’s Buick in for regular service last week. It came with the deal on the car. The damn lot was literally empty!😳 I walked up to talk to the salesman that we bought it thru. He’s a family friend. I asked him how the hell he was even surviving? He said every salesman quit except him and one other guy. The only way he is even getting by is hustling used cars off of former customers and off other lots the company owns. He used to be able to call other lots that had what people were looking for and cut a wholesale price with them. Now if they have what his customer is looking for, he pays full retail and they mark it up even more. He’s had to do several deals that way and is upfront with people. They are desperate enough to pay the penalty tax just to get what they want. He said gm can’t get the chips still. He said the chip manufacturers claim the cars are using an older style chip and they have moved to newer chips. That sounds like bullshit to me and him. But that’s their claim. ???? What are your thoughts on that?

Man I would be down for 3.73's all day.

The new service truck I am in grosses 21k everyday on on 225/70/19.5 has 3.73 gears with the duramax and 6 speed allison 1000
It doesn't lack for power at this weight, very well performing I would say.

My wife's uncle does "dealer trades" he's the guy that would go get those wholesale cars you are talking about. He said business is over LOL.
One per month now vs 2-3 per week.

The actual chip game is weird to me, cars don't run on chips they run on ECM's right, so the ECM's can't get assembled with out the chips.
EVERYTHING uses chips so it's a weird position to have chip shortage at that level when the entire world still is using chips with no "chip shortage".

I could see them going from a "40 mhz" chip for the new model (to increase performance, scroll speed, user input etc.) to a "20 mhz" chip from last years model.

It has to do with the contractual obligations automakers have with chipmakers. Google it. I'm too lazy to explain it and would probably do it wrong.

Also, it's not just cars. My employer uses FPGAs in our products and we're feeling it.

I can't wait to go pickup my new truck and load my old truck on the trailer behind it unless the dealer cuts me a check for $20k to leave it.

I really want a F450 then take it to these guys for a single wheel conversion and 6:17 gear change :smokin:

Picked my F550 up from them about a month ago from them. Shipped it down in late July, ended up sitting waiting for back ordered parts for the wheels. 2.5” lift on 365/80R20s. :smokin: Drives straight, rides better than stock..which isnt hard given its a 550. Mines a 2018, the 6 speed runs a few more rpm in OD than the 10. If I had a 10 speed I’d have done 6.17s right away.

I’m still running the 4.88s with the 43s, brought it down to around a 3.90 gear if I was on the stockers yet. Nice inbetween from running 2500+ rpm at 70 mph on the highway, down to 1900ish. Picked up a couple mpg as well. If I start towing / loading any heavier regularly - grossed 28k most of the day today - I may bite the bullet and toss the 6.17s in.

Mine is a do all rig. Work, tow, camp… working on getting a bed camper set up with boxes so I can slip it all on and off quickly. Head out for some camping and riding, get back, pop it all off and do some work.

on topic - had a 350 tremor on order for a few months, came across the 550 for a decent deal and decided to to the route I really wanted to anyways. Some of our ag equipment is out 6-9 months.

For real, these big tire rigs are bad ass.
i see you’re in DFW. DBL is in Hurst. Swing by there if you’re in the area, there’s usually some awesome rigs sitting outside. When I picked mine up there were 4 or 5 others parked out front. Mine was the most budget version of them, base XL with some dings on the flatbed sitting between a limited and a lariat.

The worst part was paying the bill, the second worst will be rotating the tires. Tires alone are like 160lbs each, on the beadlocks they are over 200 lbs a corner.

Why is it surprising?

the USA welcomed socialism in with open arms… and now the idea that socialism means long lead times is some how surprising?????
Not just that .
Making communist China a most favored trade status nation and paying companies to move all their factories to communist China so 10 year old slave girls can make all the parts . Was really dumb. And has come home to roost

My father bought a Buick Casadia (the little convertible ) two years ago and the Buick dealer keeps calling and writing letters begging him to sell it back to them .
And he’s like WTF am I gonna drive if i sell my car back to you ?

I will have to one day, I have zero use for that truck but they are bad ass.

Need to get the lifetime balance certificate at Discount tire :lmao:

Holy shit that's nice.

Partially. It's more that there is a huge demand for trucks out here in the Mountain / West and there are none to be found. The dealer has ZERO Super Duties in stock. There are only 7 in transit right now.

When I bought mine in 2018 there were at least a hundred Super Duties on this specific lot (it's one of those massive dealers in NV because it's in the Capital so the sales tax is lower).
This^^^. A buddy had a 19 Denali 2500 STW fully kitted up. 2020 September ish the chevy dealer he got it from was blowing up his phone trying to buy it. He ask why so high demand and they said they couldn’t get Denali’s in and had multiple buyers for lightly used ones. They had an 2020 AT4 2500 on the lot that he got for no changes. He traded in a 20,000 mile truck, in great shape, zero cash out of picket and zero added on to his current loan. Come in sign papers, swap keys snd leave. He has a 2020 AT4 with less miles than his Denali would have had. That’s partly inflation but also shows a complete lack of availability for the popular trucks.

And there is major fuckery going on in insurance deals. Maybe good fuckery depending on your position.

If you wreck your shit and HAVE to replace it then you are fucked if a new truck is 6 months out.

A coworker bought his daughter a Mazda CX7 a few years ago for $5k.
It was involved in a no fault wreck and the insurance totaled it even though it just needed the bumper covers repaired/replaced.
They paid $9400 in loss and offered a customer retention option for $$7900 so she is still driving the $1500 car with the bumper covers zip tied/tek screwed on with the $7900 in the bank.
