What's new

new 7.3 gas ford

well my kraut shit pile has a variable volume oil pump for efficiencies.

and when the lifters tick when you haven't driven it for 5 days the BMW recommendation is to run the piss out of it for 5 minutes at high RPM to pump the lifter back up.
it's either that or replace the head and lifters, so I just run it above 3 grand for 5 minutes.

These 7.3s and now the 5.0s have variable oil pumps as well

There is some speculation that in an effort to reduce windage (increase efficiency) that there is less oil making it to the cam and lifters to begin with.

I've wondered if we shouldn't retrofit cam squirters instead of piston squirters
imagine you could just loosen up the lifter bores with a little bit of honing to get more oil on the cam

Some flat tappets now notch the body so get a better flow of oil to the cam too. Loose fit might not be a big deal for roller though

variable volume oil pump is a very cool feature if they size it correctly
less cavitation at/beyond redline, and they compensate for engine wear a lot better

on your lifter tick, you are running a 40 weight oil, right?
I've found with my shitbox german car that runs the oil way the fuck too hot if I put 30 in it it'll have 5psi per thousand rpm once warmed up even after putting new bearings and a new oil pump into it.

not talking a huge amount, just a couple ten thousandths
there's sixteen of them and the lifter galley is only able to supply so much oil

ETA: and problem's likely more related to oil additive package depletion at high mileage anyways

5w40 makes it stay away the longest.
but at 5-6K miles it's gonna tick. So then I change the oil shortly after.
it's just the N52 oil change reminder.

edit:
impressively for a 180K mile shitbox I don't even have to add oil between changes, so that's nice. motor is generally healthy inside, lifter tick is a known issue that BMW was having to fix under warranty when these things were new, but that ship sailed long before my ownership.

it's just adding fuel to the oil at the same rate that it is burning oil :flipoff2:

N52 MASTER RACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111one!!!!!!!!

seriously though, the motor is great. 10/10 would recommend. Decent power, silky smooth, the sounds of a straight six at 7200RPM are wonderful.
the rest of the chassis is failing it right now, but 180K miles so I can't bitch about "BMW unreliable" it just needs all the bushings in the suspension.

Any update on guys running these?

Thinking more and more about combining our 15 F150 2.7 and 16 F350 6.7 into one rig. So it would be wife dd, camper hauler, mild towing, and occasional bdl with the 35' gooseneck

just put the 350 badges on the onefiddy. there is this dude here that swears all them wonton homofags don't know what ecoboosted boi one fiddy can do.

hold on, one sec, i'll go search for the name:lmao:

don't have enough on it to really know about longevity since I only use it for truck shit and have a commuter. I have a '22 F350 with the 7.3 and haven't had any issues with the engine in the 14kish miles I have on it. I did have a front axle seal on the D60 go out and had to take it in for that. That's been the only issue with the truck so far...

Have 300k miles across our 7.3s highest mileage truck is 115ish. haven’t had any problems but the oil starvation issue has me mildly concerned. I change with synthetic every 5k but seems to be a more of oil pressure issue than an oil contamination issue. Otherwise no complaints other than the radio randomly locking out once a month but turn truck off and back on and it fixes itself and had an oil filter develop a pin hole.

Lifetime avg in my truck (cclb 4x4 3.73) is up to 14.8 probably close to 50/50 split.

I have 15k on my 22 f350 platinum. 90% of the time it is hooked to a trailer. I was coming back from Colorado last week. 26’ foot hydraulic tilt deck with a light load on it. Running 90 mph getting 10.8 mpg. I am happy with it.

Surprised you only have 15k

My 6.7 DRW get such bad mileage, it makes it feel wasteful to use unless it's grossing 30k+ which I've only done once.

Over 4th of July, I had my pop up plus samurai on a car trailer and I'm under 10 mpg :homer:

What the the most you've had behind it?

I also have a 23 f150 5.0 with a whipple stage two that tows pretty well.

I'm sure it does

Anyone running the 6.8? Seems like there are quite a few of those on the lots. I’m passively looking into the 6.8 and 7.3 as an option for my next truck.

The 6.8 seems like it would be a better high revving hot rod engine than the longer stroke 7.3

Sounds like something I'd say.
yeah, but for different reasons.

the dude i'm thinking of- I only just found out he's also got a dual rear wheel f350 diesel now. wait till he finds out that thing has more horsepower than a real deal hdt.

bet he'll be dropping you a pm on some pointers to install surge brakes in place of trailer air.:lmao::flipoff2:

Wrong yota? :flipoff2:

I understand it's all about squeezing that last ounce of efficiency out of them. Pumping more oil pressure than you need takes HP.

Probably the main reason is because of the 10 speed transmission. Going down the freeway they turn less RPM than the older engine and transmissions would turn, also they make more hp and torque, so they need more oil pressure at slower engine speeds, they need 28psi of oil pressure for the piston squirters and that’s why they need the variable pump. Then it helps for fuel economy also.

JR4X has some posts about his and seems to be a fan.
I’ve got 8,xxx miles on a 2024 F250 poverty model with the 6.8. I love it compared to the 6.2 it replaced. It does get terrible fuel mileage though. I would buy one of these for myself, I would not buy a 6.2 gasser for myself. My idle time is high as it’s a work truck and it’s my office/toolbox all in one. So YMMV is definitely relevant.

How is the trans braking, going downhill?

The guy who sold and delivered my 40ft high cube connex on a tilt gooseneck had a brand new f250 4wd with the 6.8 that he loves. It replaced a v10 truck that he said was worlds apart. He didn't seem to be a bullshitter, his unloaded, or empty trailer numbers seemed respectable, over 10, his loaded numbers were 4-8mpg depending on speed and wind.
I forget the specifics, but it seemed like a nice setup

I don’t live near any mountains so can’t really say, usually are smoky in the mountains once or twice a year. In the hills it’s fine. I know I was able to hold 75 up pulling a 12k trailer up 77 in Virginia/ nc boarder.

Over 40 gross on this one. It was way too much with no trailer brakes. Slow ass ride to the house knowing I may have to ditch it. Probably 28-30 gross up and over raton pass. Power is fine, just have to let it eat. And it’s just a tow rig, I keep others for dding.
