Negotiating tactics part 2, ran when parked

The refrigerant molecules are smaller than the tiny openings in rubber AC hoses. It takes a long time to get low enough to trip the low pressure switch but they are always leaking a tiny bit.
I can’t argue but I have a 94 Nissan hardbody that is still on its original Freon. That said, it is definitely not as cold as it used to be.

In old refrigerators, isn't the compressor completely enclosed, with only electrical power going in?

I've sold a few junkers and NO you cannot work on it at my house.
You can pay for it, push it to the street and work on it there.
The only thing you can do it put a jump box on it and hear it crank over.
I don't need someone who just watched a season of TruckU to come pretend to be a mechanic, take something apart and leave or worse screw something else up, not to mention my time of sitting out there watching it all happen.
If the price / risk / reward is not worth it to you, no problem, I will sell it to someone else.

At one point I bought a lot of scrap cars, I'd get them home and triage them to decide what got scrapped, what got parted out, what got fixed, and what got sold as a fixer upper.

I had things in my phone contacts like "Mexicans buy cars"

And

"Other Mexicans that buy cars"

I figured out pretty quick that nobody is allowed to work on shit in my yard after they buy it, and 9/10 of they tell you they have a trailer, and they'll be there at 9am Saturday, they don't have a trailer. Their brothers bosses neighbor has a trailer with a flat tire that he said he could use, in exchange for replacing the kitchen sink. But he's gotta do the sink first.

Now non runners are listed as "may be able to deliver" and after they see it and pay, or a substantial deposit, and verify that there's no gate, there's no stupid alley, this or that, that they live on the half of town that's accessible and I'm just going to dump it on the street or front driveway, I'll deliver "for free" if they pay asking price.

That has done me really well and minimized my wasted time.

If I'm selling higher tier shit to higher tier people from farther away its "have forklift, can assist with loading". Then it's after it's paid for, and I tell them I'm not responsible for damage to their truck or trailer, and prefer to lift the load and have them back under it, I lower it, then they drive off

$50 doesn’t buy anything.
Felpro for my truck is $53 before shipping right now, the set, not just the head gasket itself. :flipoff2:

So it's a closeout, doesn't include shipping and is over $50? Very convincing :flipoff2:
Off brand MLS Subaru gaskets are $32/pair on Amazon

Ford 3.0 composite gaskets are $15/side on rockauto non-closeout from "real brands" (mahle, etc). I can and have re-used all the other gaskets in that engine so theoretically it's all you need (though I'd really recommend the upper intake gasket).

Off brand subaru head gaskets sound fun

True, MLS was better on Subarus.

I have a general policy that the more work it is to change a part, the more likely I am to spend all the money on said part.
I meant more along the lines of there’s so much less shit you can do wrong or corners to cut in an MLS gasket I would trust the mystery gasket just as much as the brand name. The same isn’t true for composite.

I always thought that was funny..."stolen radiator, or starter ect"

Bullshit.

No one is running around stealing parts except maybe cats or wheels. The junk is broken beyond what repair is deemed acceptable and they are parting it out for others or buddy's junk.

Not true. I did an oil change on my 7.3 a few days before leaving town for 2 weeks. Got home, hopped in the truck and hit the key and got an awful grinding noise. Got under the truck and 1 bolt was on the ground, and the other 2 were loose. Someone had started to steal my starter.

So it could happen, but I don't think I would sell it because of the starter being gone:laughing:

Well, I'll be darned

Also what I said!

Bizarre, because the unlocked toolbox wasn't touched, straps weren't taken, nothing...but they had started to remove the starter...hadn't disconnected the wiring though, so I'm not sure what the plan there was:homer:

A starter doesn’t take long to remove if you cut the wires. Are you sure the bolt didn’t just fall out there? The other one got loose? I had the same issue with my Bronco once, but I didn’t find the bolt that fell out.

At work the thieves show up with bolt cutters to steal batteries. Our big compressors have 4 big batteries, $1200 bucks worth. They cut the battery cables off and steal them with the batteries. About another $200 worth of 000 welding cable.

Bolts don't usually fall out while the truck isn't running in the driveway over a couple weeks. It's held in with 3 bolts, one was out, on the ground under the truck, and the other 2 were very loose. I'd been under the truck a couple days prior to leaving, and I have a look around when I'm under my vehicles. A falling out starter wouldn't have escaped my notice.

When I bought my 2500hd it was a wrecked non runner, I was renting 4 car spaces to stash stuff, somebody stole the stock tail lights

When my laydown got raided by tweakers a couple years ago, they stole whole trucks to scrap, trailers, a forklift, etc. Cats and aluminum wheels, brass radiators etc out of other equipment, but they also took a door off a chevy and a hood off a dodge, so I guess they needed some specific parts along with their meth money

Get it the fuck out of my eye balls. Dont care what else you do.

source: dude bought my cummin(g)s and left his camry, said he'd be back in a couple of days... Its been 3 months.
Wife ran into the Sheriff's at the bakery,  sweet talked them into stopping by for an abandoned vehicle tag.

Some parts connoisseur stole my 2001 Forester fog lights, driver & pass control panel and tried to remove the battery but couldn't get one of the battery clamps off.

Tyres & cat were left behind- :flipoff2:

So update to this thread.

I finely got hold of the guy with the boat and he says he knows the engine runs. He said that he put a lot of money in a rebuild about 30 hours before he parked it. I asked if he has started it and he says he won’t start it because the wet pump needs a new impeller. I did some research and he’s right. The net says replace the impeller about every 4 years whether you need it or not. They are famous for disintegration and sending bits all through the cooling system. I can see on utube it’s a bitch if that happens.

Back to the problem, he’s selling a boat that is a good price if it runs even if I have to replace the impeller. But it’s not a good price if I have to rebuild the engine. I have heard a lot of stories of fresh rebuilds throwing a rod after a short time, so his assertion “it ran great when parked” isn’t much help.

I still like the boat. Replacing the impeller is not hard depending on the access. Should I offer to replace it for free? (If he pays for the part)

I don’t think he will ever sell it like it is. So I don’t have to rush. But I have a couple other boats that are not as nice that are less expensive. (But they run) Money burning hole in my pocket.

One has a bad lower unit. This is easy to replace, but cost a grand just for the part. He obviously hit something bad. The boat still runs fine, but the housing is cracked and the internet says it has to be replaced. Should I think there’s something else wrong with it since it hit some so bad?

Another boat has a bad gamble bearing. Not too bad to replace, but the boat needs paint. Very good price.

It’s funny, there seems to be lots of good boats up in TN and KY for good prices. But a long drive to go look.

You wouldnt want to be shoving a 2nd samurai onto a trailer with a bobcat, when the owner forgets to put the tow rig in gear, causing the whole mess to roll forward into another broken down pos causing headlights to be broken.

Take a vacation up to look at them, find a boat for a few thousand cheaper and you get a vacation out of it win win. Also freshwater boats are almost always on better shape just because they are away from the salt water.

Sounds awfully specific a story from someone I know to haul home samurai’s with a manual transmission powerstroke 🤣🤣🤣

:laughing::laughing:

Or "how much oil can this other skid steer puke in the street"

Or "bro, I really need to fart but your windows won't roll down"
