What's new

Maine Bound!

I had to drop out of fire class due to a torn up shoulder. Having trouble putting on a jacket, much less a scba killed all thoughts of being on the vfd any longer. :(
bummer. We lost a total of 4 cadets over the course of our academy. Two before the first weekend. Iirc one was a torn ACL and the other was a broken tailbone. One went out like three or four weeks in with a back injury from trying to raise a 35’ 3 fly extension ladder by himself. And the other sadly went out with only three weekends to go with some personal problems.

Well, passed the skills. Won't know on the written for a few weeks, but I feel like I did well.:homer:
Nice! We are supposed to get our exam partner team ups next weekend so as soon as I know who I’m teamed up with we are gonna get together and start practicing everything.

We started with 30. Ended with 20.

1 dislocated his shoulder today on a skill test. Amberlamps came and hauled him off...we have a Dr in our class who said he'd set it....nope...protocol. Now, d00d has to retake the skills at another time and location. :homer:

Picked up a super cheap used oil tank at the transfer station this morning. I’ll be chopping it up to convert it to an evaporator for making my syrup next year.

Think you will get the oil smell to burn out?
Probably. Though that won’t affect the syrup the way I’m fixing to do this. Basically going to slice the top off and use some angle iron to build a platform for a proper evaporator pan to sit on. Add a heavy stove door to the front of the oil tank and line the inside of the tank with insulation and fire brick. The tank is basically going to become a giant wood stove that the pan will sit on. Something kind of like this picture I saved from one of the syrup in facebook groups.

That sounds much better than using it for the evaporator pan like it sounded like from my first read of your post.

Is the human centipede required for the certification or is that just like a hazing thing they make you do? :flipoff2:
Lol. Believe it or not this was a search and rescue drill. We had wax paper inside our face masks to obscure our vision. We were following the hose line back to the pump nd about halfway found our “victim” dummy that we also had to get out with us.

Busy few days. Finally finished off our syrup for the year. Bottled about a gallon and a half and ran out of bottles. Tried to make maple sugar with what was left but I don’t think I got it hot enough. Wound up with what I can best describe as a maple taffy.

today I made my weekly trip over to 1a Relics to restock and clean up my shelves Ned pick up my check for last months sales. Doing quite well with this space here. Next week I’ll be visiting 207 collectables with some game specific stuff to talk with the owner about getting some stuff in there on consignment too.

Came back home and banged out and filed the taxes, then went up to the studio and did a good clean and reorganize as it has gotten to be a bit of a mess lately. It’s nice to have a clear work station again.

The kids have been bugging us to take them to Urban Air for a couple of weeks. So today we made a trip to Bangor and let them go nuts for a couple of hours.

After that we went up the road to Ski Rack Sports which was having their annual canoe and kayak scratch and dent sale. We’ve been wanting to get some kayaks since last summer but haven’t seen much in marketplace so we figured we would go and take a look and see what they had. Well. That escalated quickly.

Picked up a pair of Old Town Twin Heron tandem sit in kayaks. The girls picked the blue one and I picked the camo one for me and the boy. $300 off on each one with some minor scratches. They also have us 20% off on paddles and life vests for the kids so we are pretty well outfitted now for when the weather warms up. We can launch them into the Union river a couple miles up the road from the house and paddle right out into Graham lake. Or we can go paddle on Beech Hill pond too.

Passed the written :smokin:. Got the email. Guess I'm an official foundation saver.

Good luck on your certs.

Nice! Our written (computer version) is the 22nd with our practical on the 23rd. Almost there! I spent some time with my assigned partner yesterday morning practicing some of the practical skills. We are taking the kids down to great wolf lodge in mass next week for spring break and I’m going to have the wife quizzing me the whole 4 hour drive both ways to prep for the written.

and yeah, we did a little foundation saving ourselves Easter Sunday. Got called up to Aurora for mutual aid on a structure fire, by the time we got on scene there wasn’t anything left but the basement. Saved that though and put out the acre or so of blueberry fields and woods that had also caught fire from the structure burning and stopped it spreading to some nearby outbuildings.

Gorgeous sunny 70* spring day here today so we had to take advantage. Yesterday was nice too so I spent an hour or two with the pole saw limping some stuff along the driveway. Today I broke the tractor out and me and the boy spent about half the day picking up all the winter deadfall, the branches I limbed yesterday, and other general debris and made a good 10 trips like this down to the burn pit.

I took down a few trees that had been bothering me or were dead as well. Driveway looks much better now thru the trees. After that we played outside for a few hours then we all hopped in the truck and hit Maine Military Supply in Holden for some freshwater fishing gear and some kayak accessories before stopping off at Jones Lobster company for some dinner, they opened for the season today ironically so it was a perfect day to munch some fried seafood outdoors.

Good luck on your certs.

did the written tests today. Fucking crushed it!

got a 99 on Firefighter 1 and a 97 on Firefighter 2. Best scores in the class. 10 out of 11 of us passed both. Only one person failed and she failed both FF1 and FF2. Hopefully she does better during the practical test tomorrow. Especially as, naturally, she is my partner for the practical.

Would you want her as a partner in the field?
Frankly, no. I don’t want her as my partner tomorrow either and I’ve been kind of passed about it since the assignments were given. She’s been in my company the whole academy and she is still struggling with some very basic stuff. Hell she had yet to actually get all of her gear on correctly in under 2 minutes until our practice session last week where she finally managed to do it. Twice. As much of a dick thing as it is to say or hope, I kinda hope she fails her gear donning station in the morning. If she does they won’t let her take the practical and I will be assigned another partner. But she did say after the written that she doesn’t want to let me down tomorrow so I guess we will see what happens. She’s older and retired and doesn’t really care about getting certified as she’s already an EMT.

Why is she there if she doesn't give a shit :confused:

:beer:Remember, no good deed...
Right? I was actually pretty proud of her. She did quite well. I only had to nudge her twice all day. Once on forcible entry when she went to set the halligan in the position to open an inside swinging door when she was preparing to force and outward swinging door (for anyone reading this that doesn’t know, inward swing you use the fork end and outward swinging you use the adze end), and once when tying an u charged hose line for hoisting as she was overthinking it and forgot she literally just did the exact same knot set up on the pike pole 2 minutes earlier.

she also is on a different department than me. I’m not saying we will never work a mutual aid call together, but her department is far enough away from mine that it certainly wouldn’t be a regular occurrence. She also said she is gonna study up and go for the written again.

:lmao: at the knots. That had so many flustered in my class. Good on ya for sticking through it.
Lol. Yeah we had a few people with their books open reviewing the knots between test stations today. Like seriously? There are only 8 knots and they are all pretty damn simple. And that was literally the the only rope station we had. Tying a pike pole and an uncharged hose line for hoisting. Only other knot we did all day was the halyard for the ladder rescue station.

all in we had 9 stations And a few were combined. Gear donning, forcible entry, vehicle stabilization, search and rescue, ladder rescue which included a carry and raise, hose loads which also had a deployment and hydraulic ventilation component, ropes and knots. That was it. We started at like 8 am and we’re done by noon.

What does black gear vs. brown gear signify? You get paid for the job now? Good on ya for gettin' the skoolin' done and passed.:smokin:

Nothing really. It’s a department preference for the most part. My department likes all black gear so that’s what we purchase. Some prefer the gold gear color. And no, still volunteer as that is what my department is. Just means I’m now certified so I can now pack up and go into buildings and work the end of the hose instead of standing at the pump panel all day.
