What's new

Maine Bound!

Did a bit more work in the studio today. Finished up a few floor pieces that needed funky cuts to go around the railing at the top of the stairs, put a transition down in front of the French doors, etc.

Then I got back on wiring and adding outlets. I decided surface mounting would be the easiest way to go with the OSB walls and such.

With some of the outlets done I went ahead and put the fridge back where it’s gonna live. Then I moved this old bench that was here when we bought the place to the back corner. It’s rough but I think it will be perfect for a painting station. Probably put another piece of pegboard on the wall behind it, toss a light over it and run with it. Also assembled the new drafting chair and stowed some of the new computer gear that came in on the shelves. You can really see how much room there is up here with everything moving to its permanent homes.

the tape measure on the floor here is basically marking out the edge of the work station. The bottom shelf is basically just going to be two full size sheets of 1/2” sanded plywood while the top surface I’m shooting for about a 32” depth. Have to come out a bit to get the pegboard vertical for the back wall of the work station.

still have quite a few more outlets to add. Only power up here before was the three floor outlets. One of which will be covered by the new work station.

That is such an awesome room! Nicely done, amazing how much the floor and paint (contrary to the haters) has improved that space. Nice work!

Thanks, yeah I’m really happy with how it’s looking. I’m going to enjoy spending time up here working for sure.

And after 4 days they finally finished installing and setting up the new pellet boiler!

This is now our primary heat source and the oil boiler in the basement is now the secondary. So the pellets will do most of the heavy lifting with the oil boiler just kicking on if necessary to help out.

I only loaded maybe a third of a pallet of pellets so far just for set up and testing. I need something to help push them to the back though. I grabbed a garden hoe I had laying around and it kinda works. But I need something with more surface area.

concrete comealong?
Yeah that could work. The hoe is the right shape, the blade is just too small on it to really push a meaningful amount of pellets around. I’d want something maybe 2 feet wide or so with a flat thick blade on it. Figured I’ll poke around at Home Depot tomorrow when I go to pick up the materials for the work station. If I can’t find something suitable I may just wind up making something.

How many btu is that boiler/cost of it? I need to still figure out how I’m gonna heat my shop with no open flame.

85,000 to 120,000 BTU per hour. It’s the pe1-35 unit.

as for cost, it wasn’t cheap. But with several rebates and tax incentives it wasn’t terrible. Efficiency Maine is giving me a $6k rebate and I can deduct an additional 26% on my taxes.

edit: that was part of the reason he speced out this unit. It doesn’t have an exposed flame and it’s all self contained so it could be installed adjacent to the garage like this without needing to do a big fire door and a bunch of other work to meet code.

There is already a feed auger at the bottom of the bin. That’s how the pellets are moved to the vacuum motor to get sucked thru the tubes into the boiler. I really just need something to shove the pellets to the back of the hopper as I’m filling it. I may eventually go up to the mezzanine and cut a trap door into it above the hopper so I can just dump it in from the top. If I do that I can seal the front section I left open and get way more capacity too. Use the forks and the tractor to raise the pellet pallets up there.

like Anything else, it’s gonna be a bit of a learning curve to figure out the best way to do it, how often I’ll have to fill it, etc.

Well I went ahead and just 3D printed some covers for the two floor outlets that will still be exposed after the work station is built. Did them in PETG with 5 walls, 7 top layers, 7 bottom layers, and 85% infill to make them nice and strong so they will hold up to being walked on and such.

I really need to get the studio finished. My workbench is a mess of engraveable stuff right now and it’s driving me nuts. I can’t wait to get set up in the studio and put those shelves to use to actually organize my stock of materials and supplies.

How fine of details can you do with the 3d printer? I build 1/24 & 1/25th scale models and parts for those would be handy
Pretty fine. Resin printers can do even smaller and finer details, but I have yet to dive Into Those. now That I am about to have WAY more space though, I may take another look at adding a resin printer to my arsenal

Got started on printing the brackets for the new filament storage rack I’ll be doing above the work station in the studio. Found the basic brackets on thingiverse but I wanted to beef them up a bit and add some interest, so since I just started watching Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood again, (yeah yeah, I’m a geek, so what?) I decided to add a truss in the form of the design on the back of Ed’s trademark red jacket. I’ll be printing a total of 6 brackets. Two left, two right, and two center support pieces. Using some translucent lime green PETG I picked up during Prime Day. I’ll post finished pictures of these two Sunday when this First pair is finished. Will use 1/2” conduit for the rails.

Interesting day today to be sure. My body found it’s limits. I was forced to realize I’m not as young as I think I am.

So today started with me going up to the office to set up a new printer (paper printer for the computer) as our old one finally bit the shit. I actually ordered two identical ones as I want one on the computer in the studio too so I can do all business related stuff out there. I barely opened the box when the tones dropped. another brush fire, this one thankfully not too far out. So I hauled ass downstairs and jumped in the truck and beat it to the station. Chief was already there with another member. The other member had scouted it already as it was near her house, so we knew we could reach with the engine so we grabbed our bunkers and some hand too,s from the forestry trailer and piled into 33 and went when one more member arrived. En route to scene chief told me she wanted me to run the pump.

We arrived on scene and pulled both crosslays. Linked the hoses up so we wound up with 600 foot of hose off cross lay 2. I started flowing water while the other three manned the hose. Few minutes later someone else arrived in tanker as did two other members. So we got the dump tank set up and got the draft going to feed off the dump tank.

after the second tanker load had dumped, chief told me to swap out on pump with another person and grab the chainsaw and associated PpE and head into the woods. (I should note these woods were on the other side of a marijuana field). Once I got in the woods and went to fire up the saw, we heard the person I had swapped out with having issues running the pump (she hasn’t run it as much as I have during training sessions). Chief told me to drop the saw and gear and go back and help with the pump. This is where I made my mistake. It was hot this morning. I heard the pump sounding not good so I ran back across the field to help as quickly as I could. Got to the panel and started trying to resolve the issue and suddenly got light headed and felt weak. Dunked my head in the dump tank to try and cool off and catch my breath but too little, too late. To my credit I didn’t pass out, but my body refused to do what I wanted it too. Partner said I was white as a ghost as I sat down in the door of the engine and chugged a bottle of water. She radioed I was down. i Slugged some Gatorade and wound up puking a little. Between this I was still present of mind enough to tell her what to do to get the pump running right again. Our EMT chief was actually driving the tanker, so when he got back to dump another load he looked me over and insisted we have Northern Lights come check me out. Took the bunker gear off and went and sat in tanker as it is the only truck that has AC. By the time Northern Lights got on scene I was feeling better and about back to normal, but they still evaluated me. They agreed I was ok and cleared me for light duty. I went back to tanker and took a ride on the next fill trip, when we got back to the scene I went to gear back up but the chief sidelined me. One of the other members had to go to work so chief made me get in engine 1 with her and go home.

So I went home for a while. Ate a sandwich, rehydrated, went to finish the printer only to find my mouse was dead and needed to be charged. So I went and did a little work in the studio, then put my blast cabinet in the back of the truck to take over to the firehouse. (We are doing epoxy on the floors this weekend and the assistant chief wanted to borrow it to blast and paint the grates for our floor drains). When I pulled in everyone was back. So at least I was able to help wash the last few hoses and get everything put up.

then I came home again and spent more time in the studio. I’ve just about got the new work station all framed out now.

over all its 16’ long. The bottom deck is 4’ deep so two full sheets of 1/2” sanded plywood will create the bottom shelf. The bench top will take two full length sheets I had ripped to 32”s which will be my top surface depth. Bench height is 39”s or waist high for me. Got a nice drafting chair to accommodate that.

the center post was set in width wise on purpose to give me a spot to secure the monitor mounts to for the computer. And those top posts will be what I attach two full sheets of pegboard to.

spiders are gonna love that space behind the backsplash :flipoff2:

gonna be awesome to have that big of a work space that isn't the garage bench. you can separate the garage stuff vs hobby/house stuff easy that way, that's a win

oh for sure. Gonna be nice to have all those shelves for organizing supplies and materials too.

what year is that fridge?
I bought it from Home Depot like 5 years ago or so. They were on sale for like Memorial Day or something.
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen those new at home depot
Yes you have.

Spent a little more time in the studio this morning. Since I am getting close, I’ve started ordering some laser stock so I started stocking one of the shelves with water bottles. Gonna be real nice to be able to organize all this stuff.

Then I went ahead and slapped up the peg board. I’m going to have to come up with something to cover that gap at the top. Maybe just a couple pieces of tongue and groove or something?

then I went ahead and installed the monitor mounts and hung the new monitors.

I will never go back to a single monitor computer set up. I fucking LOVE my dual monitor set up on the office. I decided to go with three here because when I am running the laser, I have to keep the program and window open while it runs. So I will run that on the top monitor and still have the other two lower ones for doing other things. The refurbished Mac Mini I picked up for the studio I installed 64 GB of RAM into, so it should have plenty of memory to run everything at once.

Man I wish I could turn my ocd down. That angled gap between the peg boards would drive me insane. At the very least I would have to paint it white between them.:lmao::flipoff2:

Yeah that’s bugging me too. I can’t figure out why it’s there though. The base it sits on is perfectly level. Only thing I can think of is the pegboard itself isn’t totally square. I probably will paint that bit of exposed wood to blend it. The holes are all aligned perfectly at least. I spent a bit of time tweaking it until they were. This was as good as I could get it.
