Land rover tcase LT230 thread

Any reason you couldn't put a black box in front of that and adapt it to about anything? Although, it's getting expensive at that point.
I'm sure you could. I would still like one of the planetary boxes that bolted to the back of the case.

Well ya, if you can get it adapted to your tcase.
One of these.

Just found a company that claims to have them for sale. Everything on there page looks like it was lifted directly from the Ashcroft site who no longer make one.

Then it wouldnt be possible to mount the driver/left side mount?

Which one did you use?
Forgot to mention, if you made a new rear cover for it you could drive it from the back side. You could then do a D side drop with it right side up. Since the front and rear outputs are the same strength, this might be a better option than flopping it over.

I'm familiar with them..... :flipoff2:

I'm saying to use the black box as an adapter in a way, since they will go to just about any trans.

Their in Georgia. How fuckin hard would it be to call and ask what the deal is with the range box? If they say they have it cool, have them text a picture to you. Easy peasy....

Well, when I have an extra 3k to blow I will call them. Until then I got other things to worry about.

I scored my underdrive on eBay for 800 bucks..,

This one. Land Rover LT 230 Transfer case to NV 3550 or 23 spline NV4500 adapter

I guess technically you could flip it. Other than all the controls being on the bottom I don't see any issue with it. Maybe more potential for leaks? Fill it before you flip to install?

Didnt mean flip, poor wording on my part. Theres adapters to flip the case and use the PTO side if need be.

I like the factory mounting of a bushing on each side, some of the adapters retain the left side mount as well.

The underdrive seems badass on paper, but I think 5:1 gears may be a better package.

Anyone have any new info on this case?

bdkw1 who's adapter did you use? I would like to mount one to an ax15 also, but the axis industry one says it won't work with an ax15.

It's from diesel conversion specialists. But I don't see it on their site anymore.

The axis one looks the same. I had to cut out part of the tail housing and plate it in to clear the T case. Also had to clearance a little on the case. It only fits 1 way and it is clocked down pretty far.

Interesting, I didn't think they would be in that game.

How much did they get you for it?

I remember you mentioning that it was super tight. But I guess if it works it works. If I went this direction, I'd be doing a 2 piece front anyway, so I'd be able to angle the shaft away if needed, plus I could run a pretty small diameter as it would all be above a skid.

It's still just hard to justify $1600 for an adapter when an eco box is $1100 :homer:

I wanna say it was 5-600? AX15's have the same bolt pattern as a lot of GM trannys. This one was for a 4L80 or something. If you could get one that spaced it back 4", it would solve a lot of issues. Or you could make it a divorced case pretty easy. I have a spare input shaft if you want to go that route.

The round 6 is common. But all the gm trans use 27 spline or 32 spline.

You have a 23 spline input for the lt230?

Anyone used these guys, or know of a stateside reasonable adapter?

It looks two piece? Or why else is there 10 holes?

This one is actually pretty affordable. 575 funny moneys supposedly equals $560 freedom tokens. Shipping would obviously eat up a lot, but I doubt it would be $1000?

i use the Th400 to lt 230 adapter from syncro gearboxes/ onlinegearbox parts.
its 2 pieces and you can clock it in several positions.

In the beginning we had some problems with always getting atf in the lt 230. Now we made an extra seal between the 2 and its perfect.

we had some carnage with the lt230 before.
the twisted shafts have 50 race miles on them ....
the broken case could be our fault. we think a bolt from the 2 piece drive shaft came loose and the drive shaft pushed the case backwards when jumping

So doing some LT230 investigation. Always figured any Landy parts would be crazy expensive so didn't pay much attention. Looks like they aren't too badly priced because they've been around so long.

Adapting to a 6L80E seems like an easy setup now that Holley Terminator can control it, and with the low first gear and multiple ODs get highway speeds. Looks like I could run 3.73s in axles with a 1.2/3.3 case and have respectable offroad low range on 37s and still run 70-80 on the highway around 2000rpms.

Anybody here done this? How are front driveshaft clearances to the case?

yup have that exact setup in my defender. 2014 5.3 with a 6L80E with Mark's adapter (DEFENDER) Runs 70 on the highway and crawls pretty good. What are you putting it in that you are concerned about driveshaft clearance?

I know with some transmission & transfer case combos you have to run a carrier bearing to clear the transmission pan. I think it's 4L80E / D300 that is bad. Just wondering if that was a problem.

It'll go in a 1975 Wagoneer. Still on the fence on path forward, but the swap has my interest.
