I have an old Argentinean friend who is a die-hard socialist*. The other day he calls me and tells me that Argentina is about to descend into nazism, since a guy named Javier Milei might become the next president.

So I look up the guy... And he's a libertarian

I've read his program and although he's often inconsistent, he's far more libertarian than what one sees in mainstream Western politics. Does anyone know about this guy?

* The other day I was complaining to him that getting my passport would take ages and my socialist friend says: Of course! People who work for the government have no incentive to do their job well or do it efficiently!

(this is a highly intelligent person)

1) he may be intelligent but he is still a fucking retard who hasn't learned to get over himself

2) don't know the guy, but it fits the mold of several so American countries going away from socialism. There are fewer trending that way over the past 5 years. Seems they've seen enough. For their sake, I hope it sticks

I have a bunch of hard-core lefty friends. A few of them (this guy included) I have noticed that they are growing very disenchanted with government in general, even when "their side" is in power.

One of them in particular made a sharp turn during the covid years and would put most members of this site to shame.

It is a positive trend.

Pretty well all my hard-core lefty friends were disenchanted about 25, the rest about 30. Plenty are still left but more in the some role of government instead of massive role.

The few that are still socialist are intelligent in their own regard champagne socialists who know it can be done right if only the evils would get out of the way. That group is just conversation and pretty rare at that anymore. Probably zero interaction since 2021 and covid shit was absolutely undeniable.

Small commune based communists are still generally reasonable, some realize they need anarchy or very near minimalism macro to be anywhere near practical though

It may be a positive trend, however the brainwashing runs deep and they are difficult to get out of their terms, such as "nazi" for everything anti communist, and extraordinarily difficult to get out of their voting pattern of government growth as a default

He maybe a highly educated person, but he is not highly intelligent. They are not the same thing.

Add in our youth and most adults being addicted to tiktokfacebookyoutube indoctrination that's created by all of our enemies foreign and domestic, and the only way I see forward is some catastrophic event that kills the internet and most of the global power grid.

Someone wrote a paper about all these problems a few decades back....

Uhhh, weren't Nazis socialists? National socialism?
yeah
slightly different economics, but nowhere near as differing as we're taught to assume

the underlying connective tissue is 'collectivism'

Reduce the economy to a bunch of megacorps more easily controlled/influenced by the gov for the greater good (and vice versa)? Sounds familiar. We just do it thru massive regulation that stifles small business creation. They say Obama era there was about 80,000 pages of new regulation created per year (not voted into law, created by regulatory agencies as they saw fit). Mix in more commonly accepted and expected bailout for everybody (socialize losses) and we're almost there.

I work with someone from the DR always complaining about the rich and how the government needs to tax them more. Last year they had to pay federal and state taxes for the first time at income tax time. You should have heard the screaming.

yup
the nazis add one layer's buffer between industry and the state
this makes their economy massively more functional than a straight central economy, but all that serves to do is prolong the suffering

so of course it's the path of collectivist growth that we've been heading down
it's really funny how deep the rabbit hole goes when you look at accusations as confessions

In his defense, in Argentina, they could possibly be nazis

There is a difference between "educated" and "intelligent". I'm guessing that he is the former.

No, he's does not have a formal education past high school, but he is a very intelligent and sophisticated man, as well as honest to a fault. just happens to be wrong on some things, as we all are.

In August the Argentinian peso was 260 to the $1. A week later when I left it was 350 pesos to the $1. :lmao:

Anyone and everyone was happy as shit to take any American money. One of the locals was telling me the favorite for president is trying to ditch the peso and just run on US $.

It was pretty funny grabbing a few beers and seeing a 3000 peso bill only to realize it was about $10. :smokin:

They still live in Adobe huts outside the city. The cities themselves are a bit scary compared to American building. They're still 3rd world and will be so for some time. Socialism or not, those people are poor and most will continue to be poor.

So smart he can't see that there's 2 sides to everything?
Or so smart he just knows that the side that he feels is right can't be wrong?

:flipoff2:

Sounds like arrogance, with some education. Reminds me of most of my teachers. :lmao:

Even in the city, in Rosario you have the Fisherton neighborhood with multimillion dollar houses and 5-6 blocks away you have a "villa" where the houses are made of courragated tin screwed to recycled lumber and sticks.
Lots of concrete, brick and "formed brick" (red tile block) construction and it's common to start with tin, then pour a foundation, then walls for one room and then add on one room at a time

He won by 12 points.

My Argentinean friend is horrified.

Good. Maybe he can wake up from the brainwashing when he sees things keep on going and the sky doesn't fall.

I still don't believe he's intelligent and socialist. Those two things don't go together unless you're the one at the top of the socialist ladder running the sheep. :flipoff2:

Good, tell your friend to calm his fucking tits. It's just politics, not like the guy is a socialist hell bent on sending the country into war.

I did, just got off the phone with him. There may have been some gloating too

I don't have a ton of faith in Milei. I hope he sticks to libertarianism, but I'm not holding my breath. There will likely be revolts in the country if he tries to reduce the size of the Argentinean government.

Also, I highly doubt the president and whatever small majorities he may have in parliament allows for such radical reforms.
