What's new

“I really don’t know why anybody else would buy another vehicle but a Toyota Tacoma”

It's a 4.0, not a lot race truck. It gets me where I need to be, reliably. It's not grandpa driving, but if I called it "spirited" then that would be a stretch.... :homer:
Wife's '18 Runner with the 4.0 only got 18 in Colorado. '06 2UZ Runner got 19.1 before the Schaeffer's oil.

I was second owner of a 2007 crew cab Taco, loved that truck. When we decided to get a travel trailer early in the scamdemic, we needed a bigger truck, so we got a 2019 Tundra. (Love it too)

The Taco was paid off, we thought about keeping it but changed our minds because the used car/truck market was crazy then. We took it to a local Toyota dealership, they tried to low ball us. Mrs watches the car market as a hobby, we knew what we could get for it, and we held out for a fair price (even with the paint cancer on the rocker panel).

We are a diehard Toyota family :grinpimp:

Except for the the oldest kid, she drives a VW :shaking:

My aunt asked me why I bought my 4th gen 4runner, I told her it's regularly on the list of the cars most likely to last 200k.
200K? Only if you abuse and neglect the shit out of it.
These things are solid to go well past that with minimal care.
Although, I suspect the 3 gens might go further than the 4th despite being "older".

And the 1st gens, they're still out there like crazy. They just won't die.

Picked up a GX470 for stupid cheap from a neighbor. 320k on the clock. Timing belt had 150k on it, rear airbag leak, and minor frame rust. He had new bags and shocks for it, bought a timing kit, and it’s running like a top. Tackling the frame with safe-t-caps this weekend, but it drives great. Been getting 20-22mpg with it driving 45 min each way to work this weekend.

New truck dumb, not sure which level I really need. TRD, TRD Sport or the limited, can't afford the Pro. Not sure if the upper suspension levels are worth it for me, maybe they are?

Mostly less than 200 mile trips, once a year longer trip. light loads, mostly camping and kayaking, have bad back, need heated seats and steering wheel and needs quality sound. Anyone with experience chim in.

Leaning towards this one

Haven't drove the Offroad or Sport yet, gonna probably do that over the weekend but the Limited rode and drove pretty good, just trying to get some feedback before I go back to the dealership.

You fix that yet?
No I haven't. Buddy, PO claimed lower compression on that cylinder which i dont care about. He did tune up a put 20k ago and I have no issues with it being 300k miles. I knew what I bought.

I did have some issues with it hard starting after a failed clutch situation(bigger tires into frame causing it to die). Like it was flooded, 5 times on the starter for it to initiate.

It smells rich upon startup.

Lower compression by how much? 10%, no big deal. 50%, problem.
Smells rich upon start up? Well, your injector is working so I'll point to the plug, wire, or coil that feeds that plug.
Good thing, too, because swapping the injector is much bigger pain in the ass than the following:
Start with new plug, then check wire carefully, if that doesn't do it, switch the coil and see if it moves before spending $70 on a new one.

As far as 20k ago, you never know how things can fail or how soon. It's never a sure bet on time or miles alone. My kid's truck had tune up from PO not long ago and recently presented an intermittent misfire. I heard ticking at cyl 7, pulled the plug and guess what? It was in great shape but the electrode was loose. Meaning if you turn it upside down, electrode touches with zero gap. Turn it right side up and electrode falls into plug with full 100% gap. Damn thing was bouncing up and down with vibration of engine to allow it to fire sometimes. Go figure.
