Good Bolt Rifle and Caliber? Need Schooling.

He can buy multiple lines of suppressors, or even make one for you.
Most of us with FFLs can do that. It pretty easy to carry almost every major company and most of the minor ones. Unfortunately most dealers NFA transfer fees are so high it make sense to buy from them or find a SS dealer and use their program.

I bought an Omega 300 through him and it saved me some ducets, but I do lots of stuff for him, so we trade favors a lot.

Ever since RocDoc mentioned my eventual relocation to a free state, I've been thinking of all the stuff I can do there.

The off roading, boating, shooting. Working in a shop with space and a lift. I can even put the NM flash hider back on the M1a.

It's a shame California has been ruined, such beautiful country and opportunities, the writing was on the wall when I left in 94, now the wall is just rubble. I still have friends and family there, but dread visiting if I have to go to a city. Mom is in Laguna Hills, so far enough from LA and from the beach to avoid the crush of people, but my Sister is in Santa Monica, and it's a disaster, they found a homeless guy living on the roof of their condo building, seems he'd been there several months. Fucking Hell.

If you don't like that brake, I can send you some options to try, or you can come down the hill and we can go to my range and get DOPE.

I wouldn't recommend what I use as it really requires reloading for cost reasons, old mausers are like that...
For the budding individual limited to store bought pew pew things.. .308, .30-06 or one of the 6-6.5mm rounds. Do a bit of research as to whats available locally at the sporting good shops maybe meander to a public range and ask...

Possibly the only recommendation for .30-06. Not that there’s anything wrong with aught six. It was good enough for grandpa to go slay the Huns and all that.
I LIKE the 06 I have a zillion rounds flitting around in the reloading room...course the boxes all say something like 7x57, 8x57 but there's good reason for that. Just like .30-30 stuff saying .30 Herrett or .357 Herrett. and .223 saying 7mmTCU. :flipoff2:

I like it and have a bunch on hand also. Still indicative of certain things that you suggested it on page 6 of this thread.

"Hiya guys I wanna buy a cheap 223 bolt gun to practice with"

"Well young whippersnapper, I think a 30-06 or maybe a 30-30 would be ideal for you, because I have a bunch of ammo that I bought in 1957"

:homer:

Never said I owned either an 06 or .30-30 just have a whole bunch of brass with a head stamps stating that. :dustin:

Reason being 6.5, 7, 8mm can be made from 06, .30-30 can be converted to either .30 or .357 Herrett and .223, well its the bigger brother of .222 and with a bit of fiddling converts to 7mmTCU. That tweaking fits well within my Dutch/Scotch/German genetic quirk about saving $$ by reloading as the wildcats aren't commercially available and a box of 20 8x57 runs over $40 IF you can find it. OTOH 06, .30-30 and .223 is a dime a dozen or free at the range with a bit of scrounging. :flipoff2:

Where are you Fudds buying your ammo? 8mm Mauser is widely available for under 40 cents a round.

Who's shooting an 8mm?

Well I've never actually shot it:homer:

For $3K you can easily get a good 1000-yard rifle. I have taken multiple sub $1000 rifles to 1000 yards. A lot comes down to the right optic, cal, and ammo choice. I am a big fan of 6.5 CM, .308 Win, and .300 Win mag choices. Quality ammo is available, and as someone else stated, picking a good bullet with a high BC will make a big difference. I have a Riton 7 Conquer 3-24X50 on a .308 and a Riton 5 Conquer 5-25X56 on a 6.5 CM. $ for $, these scopes provide many quality features for your money. Some of my more accurate and reasonably priced rifles are multiple Bergara's, Remington 700 AAC-SD, Winchester Pre-64 Model 70, and Tikka.
