Good Bolt Rifle and Caliber? Need Schooling.

We have broken alot of clay birds at 800 yards with my american ranch.. Short barrel is goona be a tad slower, but I wouldnt think of it as less accurate.

Those americans are good guns for what they are. I think mine was $400-$450.....That said there isnt a chance in hell that I would pay $700 for one. Thats just crazy. The tikka's are going for $750 on gunbroker. It is a better rifle in every way.....

A low dollar scope, from a company who has made a name for themselves due to how fast they can replace broken scopes, isnt exactly what I would be buying.

Lighten up Francis, that's the "suggested retail pricing" from Ruger.

There’s a Ruger American in 7mm-08 down at the feed store marked at $419.99. I’m tempted to go in tomorrow when they have Firearms Friday and see how low they’ll go.

Firearms friday? Interesting:smokin:
They don’t have Firearms Friday in Oregon?

I think everything’s marked down done on Friday, then they’ll generally have some sort of Ruger/Taurus/Kel-tec/Springfield product that I don’t need and never knew I wanted marked down enough that I start thinking maybe I’ve always needed it. And some sort of ammo marked down, but not the something I want. I’ve never been in there on a Friday when I had to have something, but I have been there on a Saturday when I’ve seen the leftover flyers and said “shit, I should have come in yesterday.”

Edit-I did clean them out of CCI one morning when work was rained out.

Local shop says they can get me a .556 Ranch for $549, includes tax but not the rest of the bullshit. Haven't bought a gun in a long time, forgot I have to take a gun safety test in this screwed up state. They also won't accept my driver license as sole identification and are asking for a birth certificate.

Cali tax. They can be had for about 450-475 on sale +tax. And I'm sure if you did get one shipped in the transfer fee would be stupid

Most shops here charge around $100 plus the fees for a FFL to FFL transfer. Not worth it unless it was for a great deal on something I had to have, like a good lever gun (next on my list). I think I'm going to buy the Ruger next week. I was going to wait until I relocate, but that will be at least another year and by then I might be so sick of bleeding money building a house I don't buy one. This is below the fuel costs to drive the RV to Arizona and back.

Ordered the Ruger American Ranch in 5.56, should be here next week.

I understand scope preferences are all over the place here. I'm looking at the Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-12x40 with low rings. It's a decent scope at a good price point.

Edit: After reading more, and looking at reviews, I think I should be looking for a "First Focal Plane" scope. The Diamondback Tactical with that type of reticle is 4-16x44 or 6-24x50. I'm doing more reading and video watching to see what will work best for me.

Looking online, most people get low scope rings due to the higher rail on these rifles. Does that sound correct?

I know I mentioned this before, but for clarification in California, your state issued driver license isn't enough to prove you live here. Need a "Real ID" or your license, and two ways to show residency. Vehicle registration and a utility bill are the most commonly used, per the gun shop. Don't need a birth certificate, but one can also be used as one of the two additional forms of ID.

I only have one second focal plane scope, it's on my AR that I use in 3 gun and at 1x I can turn the illumination on and use it like a red dot. Then if I want to shoot at say 400yds, I can dial it to 6x and the BDC will be true. This one;

Primary Arms SLx 1-6x24 SFP Rifle Scope Gen III - Illuminated ACSS Reticle - 5.56 / 5.45 / .308

All my other scopes are first focal plane, because I'm either dialing or holding a specific amount to hit small targets at distance. I think the going in point for Vortex scopes is the Viper PST II. I have three of them and they all track acceptably. Optics Planet has some Burris scopes on deep discount, I haven't used them, but they feature a simple reticle and have a pretty good reputation.

Burris Xtreme Tactical 5-25x50mm 34mm Tube First Focal Plane Rifle Scope, Color: Prym1 Sand, Black, Tube Diameter: 34 mm, Up to 59% Off w/ Free S&H — 3 models

Rings/mounts are important. I've recently moved to the Seekins rings, they use a bigger torx screw that is less likely to strip out. Most Vortex rings suck. American Defense MFG makes nice one piece mounts if you want to go that way.

Never understood the issue folks have with mushy turrets. As long as they dont move on me, I could care less.

Not a high end scope, thats for sure. But stout, good reticle, shit load of travel. Pretty hard to beat for the price.

I prefer the 6x's for what I do. Have one 10x on a rifle that will never be shot offhand. No complaints.

It has to do with multiple adjustments. If you're dialing for a single target its NBD, but if you want to adjust under time pressure it makes a big difference, and for me anyway, I cant go back after using premium scopes. Im not a total snob, I can use a cheap red dot, or the 1-6x I posted previously, but if I was setting up a dope card for 47 acres, I'd want easily repeatable results from a precision optic.

All right, now I'm honestly curious:laughing: With the exception of glass quality, and the parallax not being on the side. What is different? Dial for the shot, hold for wind.

What am I missing?

First hand experience. :flipoff2:

If you can take a shot, find your next target and dial without looking it might be the difference on a timed stage. If you have to come off the glass that can add time. Like I said, the SWFA scopes were fine, but there's better options now.

Gotcha, makes sense for what you are doing.

I think for the money those scopes are hard to beat. Get up over $1k and yea theres better options out there

I have been looking around for a couple of scopes, time to upgrade 2 rifles. Probly wont go swfa them. Trying to round up something I can dial, but low profle turrets and fairly sleek. Thats asking a bunch it seems:homer:

That Credo has me curious. Found a review on the 'hide that had some pics. Doesn't look terrible, for what I am wanting. Need to get my hands on one though

not really. whats your budget?

swaro, leica, Meopta, nightforce, all have quality glass and totally repeatable and fine turrets and can be had for under a G. some maybe on the used market but who cares? also, your options open way up under a G if you are fine with SFP.

I'm a cheap ass:laughing:...But for this rifle around $1k-$1200 would be tops.

I prefer Mils and FFP as that is mainly all I know. But I dont think SFP would be a deal breaker, long as it has a decent reticle. I prefer not to have a side focus, but also not a deal breaker.

Do you have any Meopta optics? I was looking at their spotting scope when I was shopping such.
Yes. A $500 scope. Really pleased with the features for the price. Sits well on a hunting rifle for my daughter

I went into the shop to do the paperwork since the rifle arrived. Turns out, I do need a birth certificate because I don't have a Real ID. I didn't get a Real ID because I couldn't find my birth certificate when my driver license renewal time came around. They can't accept a certified abstract of birth, so I had to start digging. I spent a couple of hours looking for it, found the original in the stuff my Mother set aside for me before she died. Hope they take one from 1963, sure doesn't look like an official document. If they don't accept the original, I am going to unwind the deal and wait until I move out of state. I'll find out when I go back over there in a few days. This state sure goes out of the way to make things difficult, can't wait to relocate. This will be my last firearm purchase in California.

It was cool looking through all that family history. She saved the receipt for my original driver license application and proof of driver education completion in 1978. Mom was a little bit of a hoarder when it came to paperwork. I have my Grandfather's Ellis Island immigration paperwork, his application to immigrate to the US from Germany, my parent's high school diplomas, all kinds of stuff.

Why don't you order a new birth certificate from your county of birth? Most have an online way to do it now

You can order them on line for San Diego from a 3rd party. Also still need to mail in a notarized affidavit to records. Takes weeks to actually get them.
