What's new

Good Bolt Rifle and Caliber? Need Schooling.

Oh you dont know what you just did. Now I gotta trash it up. :flipoff2: Pics in a few:stirthepot:
Now with an AAC can.

Surplus ammo, steel case etc etc doesnt scream long range accuracy to me.

I don't disagree, just pointing out the ammo was still available when the vast majority of other options weren't. Even steel case is more accurate than no ammo. :flipoff2:

My buddy has a LaRue in 6.5 Grendel and was stoked the ammo for it was still on the shelf when the rest was pretty much gone, and I told him to stock up, once it's gone it will be one of the last calibers to get restocked.

OKAY!!! Time to put a lil class into this thread:lmao:
Started out as a cheap way to get into longer range shooting. And turned into a rifle that comes out, if I want to troll somebody:laughing:

Ruger american ranch 223. Bedded in a boyds with jb weld. Stapled a couple Sitka knee pads on to raise the comb. Its a single shot now, which is good because the trigger is kinda touchy:laughing:

Broke alot of clay birds at 800yrds with this pile:flipoff2:

When I got into the grendel. Brass was $0.60/round, could buy loaded hornady for $0.75/round:homer: I stocked up

The fact of the matter is that this is the golden age of precision shooting, not that it won't get better, but it's better than it's ever been. Better metallurgy, better machining, better powders, MUCH better bullets and MUCH better glass, to say nothing of the fact that you can put an app on you phone that will give you accurate DOPE out past a mile +/-.

Ruger American
Tikka T3
Ruger RPR
Begara B14
Howa M1500

and some others I'm sure I'm not mentioning, all can do 1k work, and shoot sub-moa with the right ammo, so 500 yds on a man sized target is not a big deal. I look around at my club matches and if Travis is there, there's a good chance that he's going FOA, but I'd say that if you took the top 10 placers and made 'em switch rifles for the next match, the results wouldn't be drastically different, there might be some placing changes like there usually are, but I'd say 9 outa 10 of those guys would finish in the top 10.

Dude at Camp Perry 600 shot a perfect 400-20x.
Dude just cleaned a national level 2 day match, not a single miss.
Dude in 1921 shot 71 consecutive bullseyes at 1000 yds!
Dude that was one of my instructors at Front Sight, set a world record at a King of 2 Miles event, with a borrowed gun and ammo.

I'm a gear nut, but the Indian is way more important than the arrow.

I have 2 of them. Seem decent but I have not put them through much yet. So to soon to tell.

They are bulky as hell. And who ever decided on the turrets being 8 mils per revolution, needs kicked in the balls before every meal. very fine reticle though, I do like it.

But for right now I have more faith in my SWFA stuff. You might be able to round up a 3-15x.

.204 Ruger, 22-250.

Handloading will change the game in amazing ways.

I have had very good luck with both.

That being said, 7.62 or 5.56 are NATO rounds, so you will find brass anywhere.

Sizing brass with play hell with splitting the neck.

I still buy brass anyplace I can find it.

If your just looking at ringing a plate at an insane distance then I have had exceptional luck with both.

if your looking to take game like coyote's, both have performed well.

Most well built rifles/rounds far exceed the shooter.

Bergera around $900

Daniel defense d5 for around 1800

Tika tsx for 1400

Anyone have hands-on with Aero's Solus? The less tacticool Bravo version, with a stock instead of a chassis, has been popping up on sale for ~$1200 recently.

Given they came out this year I don't know if anyone is going to have a true long term review. Now, since it is new it might be a good time to snap one up before they get religion and prices shoot up.

Nailed it. For ~$2k, I bought a Bergara B14 Ridge SP in .308, a Zeiss 4-16x, a chrono and Strelok Pro. A torso at 500 is a gimme.

I'd say go with .308 because there's already an x51 in the safe. Since you'll have 2 at that point, get a press and dies. Loading to match or exceed average off-the-shelf ammo isn't hard to do and it will be cheaper after recouping the initial investment.

My standard response to this is 6.5 Creedmoor. It is about as good of an all around cartridge as you can get with a ton of factory ammo options.

As far as a rifle/scope combo under $3k, I don't know.

if you want to go 6.5 manbun, here is your combo.

Tikka T3x Lite 6.5 CM - In Stock ------- rifle for $750

https://www.sportoptics.com/zeiss-l...ge-riflescope-522665-9917-090.html------glass for $2300

$3050 but you might can find a combo where its a little better.

Have a few of the tikka t3 lite's. Zero complaints. That said, for a rifle that is realistically a range toy, that is only going to be shot from a rest. I would go for a heavier rifle

I do see that tikka is putting a 1:8 on their 243's now too. Nice to see

Did you pick up a LRP S3?

no, still thinking about it. i did import a Premier LT 3-15 from a dealer in the UK. its light and ill give it a try. the LRP S3 looks great but instead i have a line on a Hensoldt 4-16 which is one of the best scopes ever made. the eyebox is incredible, but it only goes to 50 yards on the parallax which gives the LRP a big step ahead of it.

Have heard good things about Hensoldt, but don't know anyone that uses one so haven't had a chance to look through one, maybe at SHOT next year. The LRP did exactly what I needed for 22 NRL comps.

i own one of the Hensoldts. apparently its very rare as they only imported about 50 of this model that have CCW turrets. the vast majority are CW turrets, which my Premier is and im not thrilled by it but i dont dial on my 22lr, so its no big deal when i sight it in. im also not a comp guy (no time yet) i just like to play and shoot off the porch at some KYL racks and let the kids shoot it too.

Interesting. Why would they make two versions?

i think its because in Europe, the preference there is CW. there's a lot of Schmidts running around out there in CW configuration. and also i dont think Hensoldt puts a high regard to civilian sales. as evidenced by their 5-25 going for like $7k?

It's just weird to me. I've only used CCW, but I don't see one over the other as an advantage/disadvantage.

Vortex Viper PST 5-25x50 FFP gen2. Just as nice 1/3 the price.
I guess it'll do. I've owned a PST and shot it as my main scope for several years on a 308. It was below average in all aspects.

If you don't need tactical, Leupold mark3hd is good for the price, swaro z3 is great under $900 but 1" tube.

Vortex HD is made in Japan with Japan glass. Vipers are made in the Philippines.

The newer viper psts use the first gen HD glass. Not sure where its made. I dont see any need for more expensive glass at the 500yds OP is talking about. Hell I bought a ruger american for a cheap NY PA whitetail gun with a vortex crossfire and go 10/10 at 500 yds on a 12' plate. 500yds aint hard with any scope..
A $2300 scope for that range is like buying an f550 to tow a 12 jon with a troller 100yds to the farm pond. Itll do it but its fucking stupid. At that point its just of a fashion statement.
