Pretty neat what you can do with a rifle like that isnt it?
"grade feather"The red tassle marker to the left of the table is the edge of the patio.
Can't do that in San Diego!Shot 60 rounds through it today. Mixed XM193, some steel case .223 crap, and 20 rounds of the Privi match. Went out to 500 yards. This little rifle hits whatever you point it at.
Also shot three 20-round mags of steel case crap through my Mini-14, and a 50 round box through my other bolt rifle, a Ranger .22LR single shot. Dad gave me the .22 when I was seven or eight. Got it from his Dad when he was about the same age. Cleaning guns now.
Thanks again for the suggestions.
My temporary range. It's right where the real range will be when the house is finished. The red tassle marker to the left of the table is the edge of the patio.
Guinea"grade feather"
It's a blue top.Guinea
I Googled that and all I got was a bunch of threads about ostrich feather grading. WTF dude??"grade feather"
I bought those at the True Value in Kingman. I asked for "some of those plastic tassle looking marker stakes" and the clerk took me right to them. The ground on the pad is too hard to pound wood stakes into so I had to use those. It's a blue top.
But in California it's red because of communism
It's usually attached to a hub. 2" square "stake" that can be 4-6" long. Used to bring grade up to top of hub with a dozer or motor graderI Googled that and all I got was a bunch of threads about ostrich feather grading. WTF dude??

Same, and a few other flavors.I've been eyeing the Savage 110 Trail Hunter in .308

Savage sucks compared to Ruger American
Call me crazy but then new Gen 2 Ruger American's spiral fluted barrel is a real turnoff. Enough to not even consider them an option anymore.
I'm glad I got my 5.56 Ranch when I did because the Gen II is just ugly. Spiral barrel, spattered look stock, ugly. They had a very successful product, then screwed it up.Guy at the gun counter stuck one of those in my hands the other day. I didnt like anything about it
I'm getting ready to pull the trigger (literally) on a Ruger American Rimfire compact bolt rifle like this one
Still working on getting the best price out of my go to local store. I found the same rifle on Primary Arms for almost $100 less than the local shop. I know I would need to pay for shipping, and a higher transfer fee, but that's over 20% more for the same rifle. They are almost at full suggested retail. The 5.56 Ranch was a few hundred under Ruger's suggested retail price through the same store. I need to move rather quickly because this stupid new law in California raises the tax of a new firearm or ammo purchase to 11% soon. If they come down a little, this will be the last firearm I purchase in California. My Arizona house permit was finally approved, so I can get a state ID card there in a few months.
I am planning on getting a Primary Arms rimfire scope for it because a friend has one on a custom barreled 10-22 and it's fun to shoot. Has a unique reticle and is priced well.

Primary Arms also has Ruger 10-22 ten round mags at three for $34.99. I have two 10-22 rifles and several mags, but what's three more?
Finally have a reason to use my Ruger 20% off coupon I got from the 5.56 Ranch purchase for their scope base and a set of UTG medium rings.
If anyone thinks this won't be a fun little rifle/scope combo, please let me know.
You gotta learn to set your guns up. While I'll buy stuff local, they sure arent going to put it together for me. Kinda like I'm not goona let the guy behind the counter at O'reilly's work on my truck
I know how, have a bunch of laser bore sights and a rifle vise, can get on paper first shot. However, when someone offers to do it with a bunch of fancy equipment I let them. You gotta learn to set your guns up. While I'll buy stuff local, they sure arent going to put it together for me. I'm not into competition shooting. I'm more of a shoot on my property, maybe with a few friends but usually by myself, kind of shooter.
I found a pretty good deal on the rimfire compact. The store also offered to mount the scope and bore sight it for free. Might be normal in your area, but here customer service isn't a thing. The other store also wants $70 to mount and bore sight a scope, which the new store says takes him 15 minutes.
The store I bought the 5.56 Ranch from wanted almost $100 more. Then, they justified it by telling me that if I shipped a rifle to them they charge $147 for the transfer. My new store says they charge $70 for shipped in transfers, but their price was only $40 more than a online price and I don't have to pay shipping. He laughed when I told him what the other store charges. He said they are trying to force you to buy from them instead of through them, like there isn't 25 other places nearby that will do it for less.
I understand the enjoyment of competition shooting. I used to compete in pistol matches at the police range when I was a kid. I also understand whenever you are with other's doing the same thing you can always learn something. Maybe I'll get into that later, but for now I'm relearning basic skills and seem to do better without any distractions. I also understand this is a budget rifle and it will have limitations, but I also think precision rifles are for more experienced shooters. It's similar to learning to off-road. Everyone should learn with a small tire, no lockers, no flex rig. The skills build much faster when you have to pick every line carefully. Since I'm in the process of building a house this will be the last unnecessary purchase for a while. I am justifying it based upon the fact that I can practice all I want with the .22LR without considering ammo costs. A few hours of range time that would normally cost me $100-200 will be less than $20. I can shoot .22LR as much as I want because I order it 5,000 rounds at a time. It will also keep me from burning through 5.56 and 7.62 ammo that I think will get harder to source in the future.Competitions are fun, and they make you a better shooter much faster than you can do on your own. I get it, it's not for everybody, but it's helped my shooting tremendously.
And Steve is right, set up the scope yourself, that way you can get the exact eye relief you want, make 100% sure it's level and getting the zero is the easy part.
Not at all. I wouldn't have got the American Ranch in 5.56 without advice off this thread, some of it even came from you.Picking up a 22 was mentioned on page 1.....
I dont understand why you ask about rifles. As your mind is made up before you even ask the question
