Ford 2.7 vs 3.5 vs. 5.0

Anyone's 5.0l make a good amount of noise?

I see one priced decent (13k w/ 100k miles) and they're saying it's ticking. Internet is saying engine noise is fairly common/normal on these. Have yet to see it in person, but considering taking a gamble if it's not about to chuck a rod.
there is a tsb on them, saying to not do anything with it. couldnt find that, but here is something from the nhtsa saying the same. ford and their cam phasers. :shaking: but I'm told, just like with the 5.4's, they could live forever ticking.

SSM 49761: 2011-2021 Mustang/F-150 - 5.0L - Tick Tap And/Or Typewriter Noise At Idle
Some 2011-2021 Mustang and F-150 vehicles equipped with a 5.0L engine may exhibit a ticking noise at idle after an engine oil change. It is often referred to as typewriter noise because of its similarity to the sound of a mechanical typewriter. The noise in question may be heard on some engines when engine temperatures reach 150OEF (65OEC) or higher and engine speed is at idle up to approximately 1700 RPMs. It can typically be heard at the front wheel well and is often isolated to the transmission bell housing or oil pan area. The typewriter noise is not detrimental to the engine function or durability and has no short or long term effects on the engine. This an operating characteristic of the 5.0L engine and no repairs should be attempted.
Vehicles:
2011-2014 F-150 (2004-2014), Mark LT (F6)
2015-2020 F-150 (P552) (FC)
2021 F-150 (P702) (FD)
2011-2014 Mustang (S197) (ZF)
2015-2021 Mustang (S550) (ZG)

Yes. Especially 2018 and newer. The direct injection pump makes it sound like a diesel. I talked to techs and parts guys at our local dealer and they said they all do it.

there is a tsb directing you not to attempt to repair it for that noise.

Kids '17 2.7 truck just hit 171k and will still stomp a mudhole in a 5.3's chocolate starfish.

if he had not put 285's on it, it would pull 20mpg. as it is, 17-18 i think.
Maybe a 3.5 will but none of the 2.7 trucks will run with my 5.0.

I didn't say 5.0 did I? :flipoff2:

And, I would wager that there are 2.7 trucks that will walk away from your 5.0.(unless you have it tuned and or have a whirlyboi on it:lmao:)

The tune on this 2.7 is kind of rowdy. A 5.3 ls gm truck becomes small in the mirror quick like.:smokin:

I have a 5.3 with rowdy tune in my scout and it would hang with my 5.0 F150. Of course the ford is carrying a couple thousand extra pounds. :lmao:

Recently towed my camper for the first time with my 13 5.0. Power seemed adequate. My 5.0 is quiet, but only has 45k on it.

My dads does, Ford says fuel pump in passenger side valve cover?

Impressive, assuming it's newer?

Best I've seen in our 15 2.7/6spd is 21.5 iirc. I'm not sure if the shell helps or hurts it with as much as they put into aero on these newer trucks.
Same dash as my 18.

That's about a 54mph avg, which is the sweet spot for these. All on presumably flat interstate.

going to start casually looking for a newer SUV with a bed, to avoid the gm AFM nonsense. so a crewcab F150 it is ... what is the unicorn setup i should be looking for? quick CL search says 2020 is about the newest i can afford. all i really care about is cloth seats and no sunroof. beyond that i dont have a real opinion on much.

Apparently I can’t read.

I have the JLT intake and an Oz Omega tune is in my shopping cart.

That's your run of the mill XLT truck, which is what I've got. My must haves were a built in brake controller and rear locker. Choose what engine makes most sense to you.

The 2.7 and 5.0 are more reliable than the 3.5 eb but the 3.5 tows big weight better. They all are capable of 20+ mpg highway until you put big tires on it. The 5.0 will take e85.

the 10 speed shifts funny but forscan or a snapon scanner will turn off the adaptive learning which helps.

a real rear locker is an option.

You can get a built in brake control for under $100 at a junkyard and enable it in the modules with forscan. There is a slim chance you will have to run a power wire but usually you just have to put a fuse in.

i got a bedliner and a brake control for $100 from a local junkyard.

so just look for the cleanest low mileage XLT i can afford and send it?
I would opt for the 2.7, but the 5.0 is also a great option. 3.5s, while fun, seem too hit or miss for me.

I wouldn't. Mine came with 3.31 gears... Useless for towing I had to upgrade it to 3.73s. That was the 11-14s the 15-23s have higher gearing options due to the lighter weight. I'd still choose one that has 3.54s.

3.31s here. The 10 speed helps with that issue.

Wait, something is heavier than a scout?:flipoff2:

In reality, I bet they're not to far off if aluminum body. I have never weighed our dead empty, but I think a ccsb is only like 5k lbs.

That may be an issue with the 6 speed but not with the 10 speed.

I’d be surprised if my scout weighed over four thousand pounds. The hard top stays off of it and I’m sure it lost at least 500 pounds when I ditched the original drivetrain. It has fewer doody cycles now but it’s a lot more fun to drive.

Just giving you shit. I read 5.3 and figured 1 tons, cage, ect.

Either way, my main point was the F150s are very light.
