Ford 2.7 vs 3.5 vs. 5.0

^^^^ 1990 sho for the win

I hope my 13 5.0 platinum 4x4 holds up well. It was my dad's last truck and I have become very sentimental about it. :usa:

Amusingly, this picture of the last SHO with the OG SHO came up in a discussion with some friends a couple of days ago. That was 10 years ago. My how cars have grown. They're all in line with each other...

I have a 2013 F-150 5.0 for parts deliveries. Warehouse guy earned himself a GPS tracker after I was passed by it doing at least 100mph on the freeway. That truck has been 100% troublefree other than tires (see previous sentence) despite the "not my truck" driving style it's been subjected to its entire life. Sounds like a muted version of my 2020 Mustang GT as well.

My dad left me his 19' 5.0 platinum after he passed, I wound up having to let it go and I hate it but the damned thing was a pos. 12 & 17' 5.0's did not have those issues.

What's been the reputation of the base n/a 3.5 V6?

Seen a few 2015+ no option, high mileage, 4wd work trucks at a little over $10k.

Even cletus, who's been an ls fan Boi for years was impressed by the 5.0. They had a 2wd 5.0/10 speed with a supercharger that made somewhere around 900hp for a giveaway truck and liked it enough to get another 5.0 truck. This time it was a 4wd with a giant turbo that made over 1k who iirc.

Fwiw, our 2.7 is a hair under 120k with lots of different use including towing and has been great. We bought it at 25k and have only had a wiper switch and 2 trailer brake controllers go out (no idea whats up with that, but I'm thinking I'll just go aftermarket)

I had thought about trying to trade it in around 100k miles, for a newer one, but I think I'll just keep it for another 200k miles just to make the internet buthurt :flipoff2:

Nah, about the time you get the F250 running you’ll park the 1/2 ton to 4BT swap it for a couple years :flipoff2:

My 18 5.0 truck is good at 123k. I hear a noise in the front that may be a hub going bad.

I think I'll have enough Cummings swap time for a lifetime by the time I'm done with the 97.

Really, even if it blows up at 200k or whatever. The take out engines are not that expensive. Not like a newer diesel where it's $20k.

My research says they are solid and make great power for what they are. Looking to put one or the 3.7 version in a project

Buddy of mine has one. He had nothing but good things to say about it until it let go.

I had a 16 iirc for a work truck. It had plenty of power for normal truck stuff. I only ever towed a sitter, but I'd imagine it wouldn't be great for towing much, but in reality it probably makes the same or more power than early 00s small v8s

Likely IWE Hub if the noise goes away in 4x4 that's it. Most are destroyed by idiots putting in level kits and not sucking the vac hub in before tightening the nut on the CV thus IWE cracks as it's just plastic junk. Been happening to Fords since 2004... Terrible design I just deleted mine and leave the hubs locked in.

I am going to level mine with fox coilovers and camburg uniball UCAs. How did you delete them?

If your IWEs work and stay locked now you can just disconnect the vacuum line coming out of the solenoid. The default position for them is locked in, truck gives them vacuum to disengage, my '06 has had the line disconnected for years now because I broke it doing some front end work and I just couldn't be bothered to spend the 50 bucks on the new assembly.

Dorman makes a delete assembly

RCV makes a collar that gets rid of the IWE completely

I am not sure thats what it is but it rattles over bumps and seems to do it more after being in 4wd then unlocked

Yup just pull the vac lines to them and unplug the solenoid above the booster. Unplug the hose feeding the accumulator that comes from the booster check valve and cap it.

Or if they're working fine just leave them alone.... as long as you don't try to engage 4hi while you're spinning the back tires they seem to work well. Nice to not have all that stuff spinning down the highway.

It's also good to know that if they do get fucky out in the woods, you can just unplug the vacuum line.

Good to hear. Aside from the waterpump nightmare in the fwd version, don't hear much about it. Same trans as the ecoboost and V8 so hopefully that means a longer life behind the lesser power.

My truck makes a rattle over bumps from the front end. Most noticeable at low speeds on our dirt road. 4wd works fine. I didnt notice anything loose last time it was in the shop. Maybe ill find it when the UCAs and Foxes go on.

Mine does the same. I am waiting for the rattle to fall off, so I know what it is:laughing:
I’ll let you know if I figure it out. It could be gravel on a skid plate for all I know right now

This isnt a rock on a skid plate thats for sure.

4wd works but it seems slow to engage. Also I have never had a truck that made that much noise while driving in 4wd.

Anyone's 5.0l make a good amount of noise?

I see one priced decent (13k w/ 100k miles) and they're saying it's ticking. Internet is saying engine noise is fairly common/normal on these. Have yet to see it in person, but considering taking a gamble if it's not about to chuck a rod.

Kids '17 2.7 truck just hit 171k and will still stomp a mudhole in a 5.3's chocolate starfish.

if he had not put 285's on it, it would pull 20mpg. as it is, 17-18 i think.
