What's new

Flying is a miserable experience nowadays

Yeah I've had some annoying dumb bitch stewardesses give me undue attention related to eating and masks. It's not like I was sick or coughing either. Excuse me if mask bullshit is not the first thing on my mind.:shaking:
I try to get a window seat then put the hood up on my jacket, pull my mask down and sleep facing the window so no one can see my face. Had a stewardess wake me up not once but twice to tell me to pull my mask up, on the second time pushed one of their disposable masks in my face because my cloth one was somehow a problem now even when everyone around me was wearing similar. "Have good day, ****" on the way off.

My flights always get screwed. Last was a direct trip to Tampa from BWI on Southwest. Boarding time comes and sure enough "There's a mess on the plane and we are waiting for a vacuum cleaner to clean it up."

One would think that somewhere on one of those magic carts flying around the tarmac would have a vacuum cleaner on it. Nope.... 45 minutes for some joker to walk through the airport with what I can only describe as "My First Shop Vac" then another 10-15 just standing there waiting for whatever crumbs to be sucked up, then finally boarding an hour late over some fucking Cheese Itz. At least the pilots didn't time out.

The return trip two days later was a direct flight home. Got a notification that it was cancelled and they could get me on another flight with a 4 hour layover in ATL. No choice but to take it.

Last trip to Newport RI for a wedding.
Direct flight from BWI-PVD, 10AM flight, 7PM wedding.
Flight cancelled, Got the last seat on a flight to Boston, rented a car and drove to Newport, came in hot, made the show. Kia rentals shake at around 120.
Return trip, had to drive back to Boston because rental cars won't do one way rentals for some reason, on the day of the Boston Marathon, left at 6AM for a 10AM flight, flight delayed due to "lack of airspace" Got home at 4:30 PM instead of 12.

I hate it all.

My Grandpa was a pilot, Mom told me how he would fly them to disney as kids. I have always wanted to do that for my kid

you are aware the motorcycle is more dangerous than the plane right?
quit being s wiener :flipoff2:
I'm not sure if its the plane or being in an enclosed, pressurized tube with 60+ people I don't like three miles above the ground.

try a little plane, much better
you can even open the window :grinpimp:

edit: and not die or go to jail

I won't fly. ever. all done. I did it like fifteen years ago. I screamed on take off and landing. I'm that guy that freaks out on the plane. I hate it.

Now it seems like there's a longer process to get on a plane than what exists in a prison. and its all security theater.

wife wants to do Disney or something, enjoy the flight. I'll meet you down there on the bike.
But what if your dad wanted to see you in a plane? :flipoff2:

I've been pretty lucky. Out of the 8 or so flights I've been on in the last 2 years, none have been delayed or cancelled. I try to schedule flights on non-peak days, so that helps too.

There was a dude like you on a flight i had coming into baltimore. We hit a storm and the plane starting legit dropping out of the sky every time it hit a swell. On a turbulence meter of 1 to 10 it was probably an 8 or a 9. Dude in the isle next to me started freaaaking the fuck out. His teenage daughter and wife were trying to console him and get him to calm down but the dude was having none of that shit. Fucking full awn hyperventilating, couldnt breathe, crying, all the works.

Felt bad for the guy. turbulence is one of those things your body is going to naturally respond to no matter what you do. Your body is naturally sensing that you are literally dropping in the air and responds with panic.

Im immune though now though so its not fair. Spent some time as a flight test engineer. Nothing youll experience on a commercial flight will even come close to those days, unless you actually are going to crash.
That's pretty much me just without the crying. I freak out. I go into a panic. Just a whole lotta nope getting me onto a plane. I'd need a tranquillizer at least.

wow, you are a high baller:beer:
I was referring to poor mans planes, C-172 or Cherokee
No, my boss is. :lmao:
It is a luxury for him for sure but there are times we are taking 4-6 people and it really makes sense. It also gives a lot of flexibility in a sales meeting. Typically if a meeting goes long, it's a good thing. It sucks to say "sorry but we gotta catch a flight" and walk out before the business is really complete.
RE poor man's planes, still better than sitting in the airport.

I just read something the other day about how TSA PreCheck is becoming a lot more popular, way more people are doing it, and there's some kinda legislation coming to make it free, so they're going to have to start adding more PreCheck lanes. What's next, PreCheck+?

I have Clear, and at airports that use it, I haven't had to wait in line ever. Last few trips I did pre-pandemic I really got spoiled, between Clear and lounge access. Walk right in, free food, open bar, board whenever (although like DozerDan82 I have no problem being the absolute last one on the plane, I'd rather spend that time at the bar), much better seats. Flying isn't so bad as long as you don't try to be cheap about it

Haven't flown and probably will not fly until the mask stuff goes away, slightly optimistic for mid April. After that it's game on, the last two years has meant pretty much every purchase went on my rewards Visa and I haven't redeemed any of the points, so I've got a good pile to burn through.

Speaking of security, I used to travel alot for work via driving(sometime was up to 70 nights a year), and I keep a pair of needle nose and pair channel locks in my bag to remove the .gov restrictor from the hotel shower heads so I can enjoy my unlimited hot water shower.

My last flight couple months ago I forgot to remove the tools from my bag, and they were in a little compartment zipped up.

Security pulls me to the side, pulls them out and looks at them. Hes like ehhhhhhh, I guess this is ok?, Hes looking at the needle nose, puts the needle nose back in bag and asks if I want to check the Channellock's cause i cant have those. Sucks I lost em cause they were made in America crapsmans. I said no, he tosses them in trash and I roll on. Same deal at return trip, the needle nose got questioned but let thru. I don't get it?

So Its ok to carry a dagger but not large pliers:idea:

Flew in to Sac airport to go visit my Mom up in Angels Camp, which is 2 hours away by car...or longer if there is traffic. A buddy that is a plane broker picked me up in a 182 RG Turbo, and flew me to within 4 miles of my Moms house in a little over 30 minutes. That's the way to travel.

cant have passengers be just randomly maintaining plumbing or stuck nuts
common problem in Europe

Depends on the plane, both range and speed. We went from a King Air to a Citation to a Lear. The Citation and Lear both hit 500mph-ish which is about the same as an airliner. So actually, when you take out all the bullshit flying commercial, it's much faster.
Not sure how much of a difference it makes in the continental USA but some of the biz jets can fly at 41,000ft+ which means they can fly over existing airways providing a more direct route.

Checked baggage.

Get a credit card that gets you free checked bags. Don't deal with carry-on, and you can throw pocket knives, Leatherman, tools, etc. in there and nobody cares.

Allegiant flight to Vegas this weekend was entertaining. Their planes are true cattle cars. Every seat full, just basic seats possible, etc. I don't think we heard anything from the flight crew other than the safety briefing. None of the usual "here's what we're doing" announcements, just get on, get off.

Delta seems to be the best on average. American has put us on Delta flights because they cancelled shit before also. It's just a good thing my wife is patient.

All the major airlines are pretty much the same. The budget ones are cheap and shitty but they're cheap. Vegas is about 2 hours, so it's a matter of dealing with crap airline for $99, or a major one for $500. The cross country flights to Florida we spend more and fly Delta or American, but they're usually 5-7 hours of flight time.

That will be up to the individual airlines...
Only once the Feds drop the mandate though. They just kicked the can down the road to April, otherwise it would have expired this month. AS the airlines have followed the Fed through the whole scamdemic, I believe they will follow the Fed once the mask mandate is lifted. Can you imagine the chaos if Fed lifts the masks, most other airlines follow suit, and say Delta decides to keep the masks. I think they will see a lot of kickback.

Delta now hiring non-vaxx'd

Heathrow in London just dropped the mask requirement.

Most years I have a dozen or more flights by early March. So happy to not be travelling this year, not a single flight yet. Awesome.

I went from 2-3 flights a week, 3 weeks a month for 5 years traveling for work, to not stepping foot on a airplane in 2.5 years now. Id say I checked out just in time to avoid all this shit show. I do miss the stupidity that the airport brings though. Precheck/Clear is the way to go for sure. Flew a TON of southwest flights as it was very convenient and out of 5 years I only had one canceled flight, a handful of minor delays and no real shit experiences outside of the stupidity that is the general public. Rental car companies on the other hand can fuck all the way off. Locked up a ford festiva on the new york toll way at 3 am, several failed attempts to get me to pay for pre existing damage and so on. Always walk around/take pictures of your rental turds!

A one minute walk around video can save a lot of headaches on rental cars. I do it every time I rent a car, almost every car has sort of scratch in it.

I think a lot of it has to do with the airline you're on. Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe the United, AA, delta's of the world get some priority over the lower cost airlines which may lead to delays.

I've taken 6 flights over the last two months and probably 15 over the last 6 months. I only fly United and i have TSA PreCheck. I had one flight get delayed and that's because we sat in line for deicing. typical security lines are about 4 minutes long and thats usually because some moron got pushed into the precheck x-ray line and had no idea what to do.

Flights seem to be full for the most part, but its not a cattle car because i don't fly low cost. I flew frontier to vegas three months ago and it was a horrible experience because of the passengers (cheap fucks wanting everything) and the seats were shit.

I think you're 100 percent correct, you almost always get what you pay for. If youre flying a bottom dollar carrier youre almost bound to get bottom dollar service, and will be surrounded by people who dont know how to behave on an airplane let alone in public 9 times out of 10

seriously. people complain about seats on the cheapest carrier. its like, man, how do you think they get the damn tickets so cheap. yes you have to pay to pick a seat or bring a carry on. again, thats how the ticket is so cheap up front. then those people ask to move seats around to be next to each other.
same thing on the flipside. Delta is about $100 higher on average for a domestic ticket versus other major carriers. people go on about how nice their cabins are. No shit, they're also the most expensive.
