What's new

Flying is a miserable experience nowadays

flights I took across the country were fine last year. American Airlines…they suck. No snacks ‘due to Covid’ and you can bring your own. Plane had a hydraulic leak and they kept delaying it because canceling it costs money. They were also the only airline requiring an actual mask, while others said face covering. Other than Covid bullshit they were fine. Plenty of people have told me American is the worst and always cancels flights. This is before Covid 19 pilot walk outs. Back in the days they just got drunk before flying.

Flew last week with zero issues. Have been flying all during the rona years with no problems at all.

Am at airport now.... looking as this fukin herd of cattle... every seat on plane is sold and they are asking for volunteers to go tomorrow. Man i dont like being a passenger.
Maybe if you flew on a real airline with goddamned assigned seating, 1st class and drinks (Alaska!). You'd feel differently? :flipoff2:

My wifes flight was Alaska :homer:

We just booked a trip to New Orleans in May for my mother in laws birthday. I told the wife to get the flight insurance because the way things are going lately, who the fuck knows if we will actually be able to go.

the one plus side is I heard on the radio they are talking about lifting the mask mandates for air travel in April

Mask mandate was supposed to be lifted next week. That shit isn’t going anywhere.

Flying in the 70s was fun...now its work. Last trip I took was to see bro and his wife in NC in 2008, fun seeing folks but I'll drive before I fly again.

i only fly a few times a year for work. can't imagine how you peeps that do it every week or more as a passanger can tolerate the nonsense

I VERY rarely fly as a passenger because i cant stand it.... even last night i managed to chat the crew up (not my airline) and offered to ride in the cockpit with them if it helped to get an additional standby passenger in the cabin. Less painful than sitting in back.

Now i am at disney world getting a dry and aggressive wallet raping

You kinda get numb to it, it is just what it is. I put my head phones on and sit at the bar until the flight boards- nap in the air if possible. I more can not stand rude people, but that is not the airlines fault.

Que 10$ a gallon gas.......
To me it’s still worth it.
Flights aren’t the bargain they once were and I travel freely on my own terms without being violated.

I’ll probably curtail my driving travels while gas is this high but it’s likely to go down at least some by winter.

I don’t need to go anywhere anyway because there’s nowhere I need to be ever.

Save for the excursions out of state for relocation purposes, I’m content.

I used to think flying was kind of fun
not now by the time you get to the plane, you feel like a criminal

I have gotten the luxury of traveling with a private plane, that is the way to go. I don't give a shit if it is slower, it was much more enjoyable experience

yeah charter would be the way to go for frequent business travel. even if just smaller planes and more time and such

never chartered, but curious if it's really more time? 2-hours before flight, TSA, lines, "people"... vs. pulling up to the plane, getting on and going.... Seems it'd be comparable or shorter time?

Every flight I have been on since covid started has been delayed. Last flight to Nashville was supposed to leave at 8 am and got delayed all the way to 7:45 PM that night. Flight back to Denver was delayed 2 hours.

Not for us. Our company has charted/ partially owned/ owned a plane for 15+ years. :smokin: The ability to schedule exact flight times and fly into smaller airports which are closer to many of our customers has been a game changer. That's one of the major justifications for it. My boss calls it our time machine. In many cases, we can turn a 2-3 day trip into one day. The bummer is I rarely get to use it unless the boss is going too. :(

Guy I flew with owned his own plane, I think the break over point is about 1000 miles

for me it is an hour to the airport, two hours in the airport, a delay, fly then the reverse to get to your destination at the other end
vs
drive ten min to your regional airport, scan the key, drive to your plane, get in and go
you do travel slower and will probably have a fuel stop, but, you can actually see what you are flying over and enjoy it

I worked with a guy for a bit who did small plane stuff on the side. He had bought a 6 passenger little plane and would do regional stuff for not much more than fuel so that he could get and keep up a bunch of hours.

weekend flight? he'd fly down, hang out and do whatever, then fly back the whole group. I had never thought about that kind of stuff until then, charter flight always seemed like rich people leer jet stuff

I've only flow charter once and it was to Hawaii, that saved a couple of hours for us compared to when I flew there commercial. Walked to the "security", which was not much at all. then we walked to the plane and flew straight to Honolulu from ABQ non-stop.

Depends on the plane, both range and speed. We went from a King Air to a Citation to a Lear. The Citation and Lear both hit 500mph-ish which is about the same as an airliner. So actually, when you take out all the bullshit flying commercial, it's much faster.

We work in the steel industry and many steel mills are out in BFE or not near any major airports. However, there are tons of smaller airports that are close to the mills. Here's an example of a trip my boss and I did. Times are an estimate as best I remember, this trip was several years ago. Usually we hit a max of 1 or 2 customers in a day.

My boss and I left Pontiac MI at 6:00am. Landed in Indiana at 6-ish. (one hour time difference) Local salesman picked us up, went to the customer and had a 1 hour meeting. Back in the air 8:30 - 9:00 am and flew to Mobile Alabama. Not sure what time we landed but it was around lunch time. Local salesman picked us up, quick lunch and went to the customer for another 1 hour or so meeting. Back in the plane mid-late afternoon and flew to Houston. (again time difference is on our side) Same story, quick meeting, grab dinner and back to the plane. Lift off 8-ish and a 3 or 4 hour flight home. Get home at midnight or so.

Yes, an extremely long day but with only 2 of us on the plane, it's pretty easy sleeping. As a comparison, flying commercially, this would have been a 2-3 day trip.

I won't fly. ever. all done. I did it like fifteen years ago. I screamed on take off and landing. I'm that guy that freaks out on the plane. I hate it.

Now it seems like there's a longer process to get on a plane than what exists in a prison. and its all security theater.

wife wants to do Disney or something, enjoy the flight. I'll meet you down there on the bike.

Also, i will tell you that since the mask mandate flying has become exponentially worse. Bitches be trying to fuck with you on the plane. I mean flight attendants. Some flights they are cool, some they will harass the fuck outa you for not putting your fuckign mask up between bites. Not really a pattern with companies either. Its all bullshit, we are all in the same tin can, but some bitches cant let it go.
Yeah I've had some annoying dumb bitch stewardesses give me undue attention related to eating and masks. It's not like I was sick or coughing either. Excuse me if mask bullshit is not the first thing on my mind.:shaking:

I agree. Its a miserable experience. :flipoff2:Pilots timing out is not our fault. Some duty limits are not extendable per the .gov. if we had our way most of us would complete the flights. I am headed to the airport shortly to fly as a passenger with the family... not looking forward to it.:barf:
So whats the skinny on cell phones, do they auto jam signal at 10k feet? One of the few things i like about flying is the excuse to put phone on airplane mode for a couple hrs.

I find it hilarious they tell you to remove your mask to put on the oxygen mask

Ive probably flown 6-7 times in last two years. Ive always been on time, but its regional stuff for work.

I remember it being somewhat enjoyable in the 90's, playing cards, peanuts, larger seats etc.

I was referring to poor mans planes, C-172 or Cherokee

My Grandpa was a pilot, Mom told me how he would fly them to disney as kids. I have always wanted to do that for my kid

you are aware the motorcycle is more dangerous than the plane right?
quit being s wiener :flipoff2:
