What's new

Fireball releases a giant vise - the Hardtail

Fuck if you're gonna drop that kind of dough, grab one of these and use the leftover $500 to buy or build a big ass vise to use as a beater.

1) That's not even in the same league as what we're talking about here.

2) You can't find a huge beater vise for $500 any more. The collectors have gobbled them all up and anything decent is going for stupid money now.

BTW, I bought a set of his plans, so I don't mind making one.

Not sure about how the rest of you feel, but I respect his Intellectual Property rights.
Maybe anyone buying parts should show proof that they paid for a set of plans??

Technically you could watch his build video and pull all the pertinent info out of it, but I don't mind shelling out $5 for the files.

Stupid money, like $1500 for a damn vise...? To squeeze some shit so you can smack it with your $20 harbor freight hammer?

Plenty of deals out there to be had, just takes more than 5 minutes on Facebook to find. I've got a 300lb kurt D100 that I picked up for $300

Not everyone is a cheap fuck that is willing to wait months or years for the right deal to come along on a used vice.....

I bought the plans, but never got around to building one.

Even comes with a table

Wow. Awesome busted 4-1/2" reed, complete with custom booger welded base. Total deal there. And totally comparable to the OP vise.

I’ll pick up some 1/2” this week and burn out the flat parts for you guys. It would basically be the 4 side plates base plate and maybe the end cap where the nut tube welds to.

If you interested maybe the jaw holders if I can get some over the counter hardened jaws to use as a pattern.
I'd be down to buy a parts kit as well.

I'm in, if it's reasonable. :smokin:

I’ll work on this this weekend. Looks like there is enough interest. Grendel sent me his dxf. I’ll look it over and might make some slight adjustments in order to improve it from my first one. I’ll get some 1/2 t1 drops this week from the steel yard.

I’ll put my brothers brand new cnc plasma system to the test.

Depending on steel cost should be around 125-150 + flat rate box for a set.

wait $150 for a full kit that I put together to make

?

I'd use that in thirty years when my shop gets built.

I'd love to be able to use those Wilton 10010 jaws

So, not a full kit.

I am working on the machined parts now.
Cool beans. Its no where in the immediate future, but I'd rock that in my shop when it gets put up.

I think between all of us, we can come up with a full parts list.

cut steel from PZ
jaws already listed here

We need to find the screw parts and also seamless tube.

I've got a surface grinder. Would trade some ground jaws toward a set of plates cut.

Anyone have a heat treat oven. Waiting on my grandma to sell her house and take one of the kilns but she's preferring to run her bank account into the ground first.

Ground and tapped jaw plates would be tits.

Not sure we need heat treating?

I am working to modify the model for a swivel base now.

Depends on what you want the jaws for. There at times good hard jaws are good, times where softer is better. Aggressive vs fine teeth (or flat), grooves for gripping round and the sizes

I've made a few different sets of jaws for different purposes. Even made some super ghetto flat roller dies for one of my vises. If you are gripping a lot of stuff that surface finish doesnt matter on and you are going to beat the crap out of some toothed jaws that are hardened to mid rc40s are nice, they keep gripping instead of the teeth getting mashed flat.

I put all the parts listed on the build sheet through mcmaster and it's about $170. I'll probably go with Acme thread instead of the standard rod so that'll add another $30-40.

You can get 4, 6, 8 and 10 TPI with ACME - so lower TPI = faster moving jaw, higher TPI = more force. The original was built with standard 8 tpi threaded rod.

What's the jaw opening length on these?

Frankly I already have a 6" vise and a whole laundry list of other things to throw $200 at and the last thing I need is to spend valueable free time welding a project that isn't strictly necessary so I'm probably out unless it's a substantial upgrade over what I have.

Buy two and ship them to me and I'll assemble it for you using Harbor Freight's finest 7018, free delivery next time I go north. I promise to only weld dicks in spots you can't see. :flipoff2:

We need to find the screw parts and also someone who has no life and a long nose die grinder
FTFY :flipoff2:

I think it’s like 12-13” open between the jaws if not more.

All the screw parts are sourceable from McMaster carr

1 acme coupler nut

2 acme regular nuts

1 acme rod

2 thrust bearings

1 handle

I was working on the drag engraving programs on the router. I can offer dickbutt engravings with existing gcode

This is AL but I have a finer point drag bit for steel to test next.

That's why I'd want to use a variety of different jaws in this.

Technically it's as wide as you want to make it - just lengthen the box tube and the screw components. The production one that started this thread is 14". The plans don't show the length, but I think it's 13"+

Edit: Actually, in the original build video it was 16". Not sure if the plans match that or not yet.
