California Mountain Lion Attack On Humans

So sad.

Sad. Prayers to the family.

I live in the thick of mountain lion country. Just this past winter, we had a female calling for a mate for a good 45 minutes right in our yard. Neighbor was out the next few days tracking them just to see how many we had in our area, and they found tracks for 5 separate females, some kittens and a big male tomcat. Finding an eaten deer carcass nearby is a common thing.

Need to keep your head on a swivel when out in the woods around here.

Trail Cam photos from right behind my place on my neighbours property. This is the mom, she had a kitten with her as well. They took a deer down and ate it right where this trail cam was setup.

Colorado always denied the existence of wolves until reintroduction was put on the ballot. Magically they announced the discovery of wolves residing in the state. I had a CO game warden tell me back in '08 they were aware of at least two packs on the state but they'd never admit it until they had to.

I'd forgotten about this.

In the last week there have been a number sightings of a mountain lion inside the city limits of Twin Falls, Id. A few dogs have been attacked and some house cats have gone missing.

Yea we have a couple roaming around here showing up on Trail cams
And of course we get grizzlies wandering through town also

I've been wondering if they eat cats. I would like to think our area has enough cotton tails and jack rabbits they would go for first.

The wildlife people think the cat came down from the "South Hills" which is forested with streams. It's about 5-10 miles south of Twin Falls.

Our canyon in front of us has a female that usually comes down with her cubs. Father claims to have seen one a few years ago. Who knows

They're like pretty much any other predator. They eat what they can. A mountain lion with reduced hunting capability due to age, injury, illness, etc. will naturally start seeking out easier prey items even if it comes with the risk of increased exposure to humans. Nuisance predators usually prove to have something like that going on with the exception of foxes, coyotes, etc. that have become better adapted at living close to humans. Big cats are seldom seen for a reason. They generally try to avoid us.

One neighbor has 50 goats. That makes me feel safer.
ugh

There was a mountain lion treed about a 1/4 mile from my house this weekend. Right in a subdivision.
I was kind of hoping it would get rid of some of the feral cats before it got caught.

Renowned conservationist, animal painter and biologist Carl Akeley with a leopard that attacked him, which he killed with his bare hands (1896)

Thats a very small leopard. Guarantee he wouldnt have killed a mature male with his bare hands and just a bum wing to show for it.
