Calif Fires

If you zoom out any of the wildland fire maps I produce then you will always see all the current satellite hotspot data. That data is automatically updated several times per day. MODIS satellites = red triangle. VIIRS satellites = orange square.

Caution! Satellite hotspot data is *always* several hours old when you see it on a map and locations are approximate. This is because it takes NASA about 3 hours to process the raw data before it can appear on a map. For that reason, you should never rely on a satellite hotspot map to ignore an order to evacuate!

To make your own custom map link, zoom in on an area or click Menu ==> Search. Turn on the overlay layers you want. Then click Menu ==> Link to this map. The link you see will replicate the map on your screen.

To learn how to turn other overlay layers on/off, to find out the importance of the ‘top’ layer and otherwise get the most benefit from the map, please read the “Map tips”. That link is in the upper left corner of each map.

For larger fires I will post a zoomed in map that also shows the fire perimeter as determined by an infrared overflight. While a big fire is cranking I usually get those perimeter maps updated by 6am. But currently I am not posting perimeter maps while I work on the code.

Open GISsurfer map:

Link doesn't seem to work for me.

Good news is it was blowing north east last night and this morning it was blowing south, back into its self. It now looks like it is just more or less staying put.

Nice,
I like you can click on the fire, then click on Flightradar and see what aircraft are doing in the area

would like to know where GST944 is going
that's the global super tanker (aka 747)
in the foothills east of Angels Camp at 2600ft
that has to be something to watch

Edit:
looks like it went to the Salt Fire
east of Milton near Salt Spring Valley Reservoir
only 1200 acres which is odd

also has taker 137 (737) out of McClellan

Things have gone a bit sideways at the fire across the river from me. Tons of people evacuating now. Lots of homes in danger. Sucks to stand there watching it and now be able to contribute somehow.

7500 acre fire about 30 minutes away from the pics harryjohnson just posted. My sisters getting evacuated from the house she just bought (total gut job remodel needed for $900k, she would probably be stoked long term to have a fire wipe it off the map)

This is looking directly toward her place on top of the mountain

I hate seeing this every year. Stay safe everyone, get prepared to leave if you need to. Everyone should have their most important belongings ready to go at a moments notice, everything else can be replaced. Take pictures of everything you own, literally open every cabinet and drawer and take pictures. It sucks trying to remember everything you lost after your house burns down.

Welp, looks like my crawler may be gone. Feel kinda petty being bummed over that when so many people are loosing homes, but fuck. That's what I get for not finishing it over 10 years. Off to email got propane and have them postpone my order till further notice.

very good for people to remember this
during the King fire when it got close to time to leave in a hurry I started running through every room with a camera.

take pictures and videos of everything
best to do it when you are not in a panic to need to leave.

Wednesday August 19, 3am. #HennesseyFire exploded. Map shows satellite hotspots. Location approximate. This data is *already* several hours old! Sure hope everyone makes it out.

damn, when I looked at the satellite info this morning it looks like it is right down to Hwy 80 in Vacaville:eek:

your house or someone else's house?

Wednesday Aug 19, 9am. Currently the satellite hotspot data for Hennessey Fire (Vacaville) and other area fires is showing many ‘false positive’ hotspots. Lake Berryessa is not on fire. Likewise, the Hennessey Fire has not crossed I-80.

False positive satellite hotspots can happen when (1) the satellite ‘sees’ the fire near the edge of the strip of land the satellite examines and (2) the fire is throwing a huge amount of smoke loaded with hot/burning embers.

But with all that said, keep the #1 rule firmly in mind. If you are told to evacuate then get your butt in gear and GO!

Not sure what you're talking about...Or where you're getting your information.

But I am pretty sure both are incorrect.

Unless I'm just misunderstanding.

what he is saying, is the heat signatures from the satellite flybys (the red dots on the fire maps)
can be wrong in both location and even if they are on the ground.

this has been shown several times where the heat source may be on one side of the highway, but it is known the fire never crossed the highway
also he stated it can be picking up the burning embers that are in the air, and not a fire that is on the ground.

they do indicate heat, it is not always accurate of location (both vertical and horizontal)
VIIRS seems to be better than MODIS as far as accuracy
