What's new

Bought a house from 1810 (and some other stuff)

There are a bunch of really old oaks on the property, but this one is my favorite. Again, pics probably don't do the scale justice. It's probably 5' diameter at ~5' off the ground, but around the base it's got to be ever bit of 10'. It's got a couple dead looking limbs....I'm hoping it's not completely infested and/or dying.

There was another one similar in size here that was removed many years ago. he hollowed out the stump and made a 10' diameter fire pit out of it!

Alot of times a big oak tree like that will rot out and be eaten from the inside. The pic with the fire pit I'm sure the perimeter was all that was left of the tree when it was cut/fell. I've had a few where you could go inside.

The one in your pic still looks pretty solid. Usually you will see a smaller hollow spot near the ground where two main roots spread out and a bunch of rotten sawdust from bugs.

Or they will lose a big limb or two and die piece by piece. Mom had one that was 5' in diameter about 5' up, it slowly lost limbs on one side and over the years leaned away from the house. It even started to buckle the compressed side. It blew over in a derecho and was PITA to cut up.

Also, I own a throne. :flipoff2:

You are officially my hero. There are two things I've always wanted since I can remember, a wooden Indian and a motherfuckin' throne and you got them both. I bow to you oh throne sitting wooden Indian polishing excellency.

Here's another fun one...

One of the bedrooms has a loft over it...

And sitting on that loft.....

I'm gonna be looking presidential in no time! :flipoff2:

Extremely common in older homes before they used plywood for sub flooring. I’ve seen plenty of cases where floors Kim’s that were covered in hardwood flooring for the final surface. It probably has something to do with stability compared to nailing everything perpendicular.

These floors are from 1989, so....

I'm sure they did it more for aesthetics here. All 3 lofts as well as the entire roof (subroof?) is done with that same 4/4 T&G. Can't imagine what it would cost to do that today.

In that case yes, totally for aesthetics. I was curious about the finished lumber. In older buildings where I have seen it the lumber is rough sawn in some are kinda finished, but not to today’s standards.

From what I can tell, only the foundation walls are original to 1810. (He actually left me a bunch of history on the property and surrounding properties that I need to go through and post up.)

Some lawyer from VA bought it in the 80's and tore down the old dilapidated plantation mansion that was still somewhat standing and then turned the old stone mule barn in to a house. From what I was told, it was finished in '89. I need to dig through the tax records and see if I can confirm that.

I was unsure how old the trusses were until I finally got a good look at them. They're definitely made of newer, dimensional lumber so my guess is it all dates to '89.

One thing that does impress me is how well the concrete slab has held up. I think there's one small crack near the kitchen, but otherwise nothing. Not bad for 3,600 sf. The 10 year-old slab in the shop looks way worse. :shaking:

You just pick an angle and leave you saw at that and be consistent whether you're measuring from the long side or the short side of the boards.

When I use used lumber I like to do it this way because you often wind up with less waste without having too many joints to close together.

I wouldn't be too impressed. You don't have freeze and thaw to break things. The fact that the slab is original just means they weren't dumb enough to pour it on a swamp.

This is NC. We don't have freeze-thaw cycles. Our frost line is about 1".

Balcony in a bedroom:smokin:

I’m not sure if I would want to watch or show off....

I was thinking incorporate. Backflip off the balcony into a triple lindy and really stick the landing, if you know what I mean.

I've been killing myself moving all my shit and getting the old place ready to sell. I'll have it ready by Friday. I took all last week off from work and did nothing but move and clean. Made at least 16 trips back and forth. Haven't had much time to post or take more pics.

Got my LTE hotspot in and have half-assed wifi in the big house now. Getting a whopping 3mpbs. I ordered a craddlepoint and a bunch of ubiquiti gear so I should be able to get better speed and better wifi coverage once I get all that set up. Shooting for 40-50 mbs and full wifi coverage in all buildings and outside.

Haven't even slept at the new place yet. I've been moving all my vehicles and shop stuff. Haven't moved any clothes or food or gone grocery shopping. Beer fridge is fully stocked though! I'm off for the rest of the week. I'll probably move up and start staying there tonight.

I also need to fuck with the well and controls. Right now it's set at 30/40 which is painfully low for the shower. I need to go pop the cover off the well and see what's out there. The PO told me he had the pump replaced with what I think he was trying to call a soft start setup. I have the tag from the pump and I believe there may be a VFD control out at the pump head. Before I just crank up the pressure switch and tank I want to understand how the VFD works and make sure just cranking up the pressure isn't going to fuck with it or the pump.

The well is like 500'+ away from the house. It's almost flat, maybe slightly downhill and then comes in to the house at the top of the foundation wall, so there's very little head once it gets to the top of the well. It probably drops 10' before it hits the house and then another 12' or so once it's inside the house. The line in the house is 2" right up to the pressure tank and then drops to 3/4" or 1". So when I was checking what the on/off pressure was set at, I just ran the bathroom faucet. With that much head above it, the faucet ran for a solid 15 minutes before the pressure dropped enough to turn the pump on. That's a lot of water storage! (Also a lot to leak in to the house if a pipe ever bursts.)

I don't bow hunt, but those look pretty old honestly so I doubt you have much there. The cost to restring and get set up properly isn't worth it compared to buying new.

Probably this. Any other names on the limbs or risers? Looks like a home camo job. I gave an old Bear Whitetail bow away.

The Oneidas have some value, they kind of have a small cult following. The other stuff, not so much. Oneidas are pretty popular for a bowfishing rig.

I assume that's these?

I think they're all DIY camo'd. I'll have to look closer, other than the one in the pic I don't think I saw any notable names or markings.

I dread throwing stuff like this on FB for people I know it will bring out...ugh. "Would ya trade for two half used cigarettes and a goat?"

This. I’m sure there are Oneida Facebook groups. Might be worth hitting up to get a value and possibly sell.

Edit: Or try ArcheryTalk.

Yeap. I'm not sure how best to move them in your area without the internets. Here, I'd give them to my buddy that has a pro shop to deal with.
