What's new

Bought a house from 1810 (and some other stuff)

I wouldn't sell a damn thing. That house/property and its contents are unique as fuck. Reminds me of some kind of hunting lodge. Living there would feel like being on a vacation of sorts in my mind. I would probably change some furniture to make it my own, but that's about it.

I'd do something to document the history of the place as you know it. Some guy in 2220 will thank you.

Engrave some brass plates with the history, and put them in an alcove in the wall...

I never thought I'd own a shop worthy of such fine art. :flipoff2:

If I go through with converting it in to a wedding venue I do plan on making a plaque outlining some of the history of the place.

The PO left me a lot of documentation.

The original farm was part of a ~1,500 acre land grant from the Queen in the 1700's (I swear he said elizabeth, but that doesn't jive time-wise)

By the 1800's it was down to a ~500 acre farm/plantation. The original 1800's plantation home was on my property right next to where the current shop is. It was still standing until the guy that "built" my current house bought the property in the 1980's.

The barn that is now my house was built to house the mules that worked the farm and turned a big water pump that irrigated the fields.

The old wood barn was built as a tomato cannery in the early 1900's and was later converted in to a tobacco barn around the 40's.

The PO left me a copy of a few pages of a book of the history of the county that has a lot of info about the farm and even some pictures of the original house from the 80's. I need to see if I can source an original copy of that book.

I did find that plaque in the house to denote its historical significance.

Nice touch on hanging the art in the shop. Glad you are getting settled in.

Who here has cleaned their bathroom and found a black powder rifle? :grinpimp: Seriously, I never even noticed it leaning in the corner up on the ledge.

Can't find any markings on it other than "Cal.45" and D5338 (serial #?)

I also kind of figured out what the deal was with that giant dresser thing. Turns out my previous speculation that it was original 4 separate pieces was mostly correct. I noticed that there were signs of being cut on the sides of the 3 stacked pieces. They were originally all identical to the "base" piece with the legs but at some point someone cut off the legs of the other 3 to make them stackable.

I still don't totally know what they were intended to be used for individually. They're 6' wide and 2' tall. Really weird dimensions even for a dresser/table thing. Maybe they were made to go at the foot of king size bed or something?

Think they could be to store blueprints in?

Longer one needs to be in the middle, for visual balance 'n' stuff. And, to juxtapose the two primarily monotoned images on each side. :flipoff2:

I think you're over thinking this piece. I have a couple pieces that are "one piece" but are really three pieces that stack similar to yours. The one's I've got I know were intended to store blankets and linens and other bulky shit. Now.... the cut down one side posted previously.....I got nothing.

They were actually 4 identical ones that someone cut the legs off the other 3 to stack them. Still weird dimensions for a single one though....and how did someone end up with 4 of them? Maybe they were hotel pieces or something.
