What's new

Bought a house from 1810 (and some other stuff)

Outstanding, just awesome.

I'd be calling auction houses to come look at what you have, fawk dealing with all that stuff. There are Auction houses for every type of thing you have there.

My inner tight ass will probably prevent me from doing that for a while. I bought the place with the intent on recouping some my money by selling some of the stuff off. If I can find the right auction house, I may consider it. I'm more inclined to look at consignment shops for the bigger ticket items. Might take longer to sell, but I should net more out of it by finding the right buyer. Get the wrong auction or wrong date and stuff can go for pennies on the dollar. There are a few really big consignment shops nearby that will let you rent a booth. I probably have enough to justify doing that for 6 months or so and then sending what doesn't sell to an auction.

Understood. Just two ways of looking at it. For me I hate people and my time is valuable, I'd gladly pay to have someone else do it and not have it drag out for 2 yrs or whatever it will take you. I've got other shit I'd rather be doing.

As far as auction houses go, there are some that specialize in mounts, some that specialize in the other stuff too that have world wide markets. I wouldn't go to just anyone.

Looks like it might be a Yamaha G1, see: https://wildaboutcarts.com/what-year-is-my-yamaha-golf-cart/ for a list with pictures and serial numbers by year.

Pretty sure you're right. Couldn't find a serial # on it. I did realize that it's a direct injected 2-stroke. Probably somewhat cutting edge when it was new!

For the mounts and antlers, try to find a place local to you like the place in the link below. They can sell for big $$, especially if you find someone that caters to the market.

Someone might have put two sets together. We had a set of file cabinets that were similar, had feet, two sections of 2 cabinets each and a top.

Aaron Z

My thoughts exactly. The top of the top box looks like it has a raised center to engage in into another box. Could have condensed two sets at some point.

But then my parents also have a couple "Highboy" Chests of drawers that would require a stool to get into the top drawers. Oldschool furniture was made to be the closets of the time. Most houses did not have them or they are so shallow that the concept of keeping your clothes on hangers had not yet occurred to them.

I think you're both close.

There's definitely a bottom piece and then 3 identical sets stacked on top of it. The trim on the top is just held on with a metal strap from the back.

Then again, the first stacked one has a big cut in the lower part of the side. Maybe it was two two-piece sets and then cut the bottom legs off that one to stack them all together?

The left drawer in each set has an "American of Martinsville" tag. Martinsville VA is only about an hour away. They're apparently highly sought after for their "mid century modern" stuff now. (:puke:) In fact, that's pretty much the only style that turns up when you google them. Nothing like this and it doesn't look like it's from that era, but it also doesn't sound like they were in business much after that. More research required.

This thread is not what I thought it would be....

nice score!

I was reading up a a little last night and apparently there are some restrictions on selling wildlife mounts and "parts" in NC. At a minimum it sounds like I need a $10 "Trophy Sale Permit" for each piece sold. You need to go through their web portal and attach a pic of each piece to the permit and give them all your info. I couldn't tell if that's required for the fish too. I need to read the full law and make sure there's nothing in the collection that could get me in trouble. Not even sure I can legally sell the antlers.

Last thing I need to to list them online or something and get the attention of someone with a fine book.

Doesn't sound like much of an issue when you have friends all over the country.

That definitely varies by state. There's a fair amount of poaching in Iowa tied directly to the fact that we can sell deer antlers in this state. There's a pretty high demand.

Yeah, I can see that. This guy was probably mostly legit. He had a taxidermy business in town and then moved it when he bought this place and built the shop. I think it was mostly a hobby by that point.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if he poached a few deer off the front lawn. The property has tons of fruit and nut trees and he showed me pictures of tons of deer and other animals from around the property...and may have made a few comments about not have to go far to hunt.

Nah, he didn't poach any deer off his lawn.........he just invited them in for dinner.

If I were to buy that place as you did, I would have a very hard time not walking around the house all day in silk pajamas, Corinthian leather slippers and smoking a Sherlock Holmes style pipe while yelling "Jeeves, please fetch me my brunch and the news paper."

The house(s), property and everything that came with it is fucking pimp, I don't know if i would be able to sell much. You are a luck man to have scored that sweet deal!

Every time I went there with my realtor for inspections and whatnot, I was like "what the fuck am I buying?" I was saying that during the final walkthrough the day before closing. Nothing about the deal made sense.

It hasn't totally sunk in yet.

I've spent the last 4 days moving as much shit as I can so I can get my old house ready to sell. Every day has ended with me completely worn the fuck out and spending an hour or two in the house relaxing, drinking a couple beers and just looking at what I just bought.

Random pick from last night...
This light is on it's own switch as kind of a foyer/entry light. I think it's my favorite out of the 10 or so hanging stained glass lights in the main part of the house. Looks really cool at night when it's the only light on.

There are a bunch of really old oaks on the property, but this one is my favorite. Again, pics probably don't do the scale justice. It's probably 5' diameter at ~5' off the ground, but around the base it's got to be ever bit of 10'. It's got a couple dead looking limbs....I'm hoping it's not completely infested and/or dying.

There was another one similar in size here that was removed many years ago. he hollowed out the stump and made a 10' diameter fire pit out of it!

Embrace what you now have. Treat everything with the sentiment of a true gift.

Me personally, I would "let go" of what I didn't want to keep... slowly. There's a lot of windfall to lose if you rush anything.

I'd be really tempted to bring in an estate sale company, throw all the shit I didn't want in one building, and let 'em go to town.

They made a lot of good stuff in those factories in Martinsville back in the day.

I grew up in central Mass, which was the furniture capital of the country a long time ago. Really nice stuff came out of those places. 50+ years ago. Of course now it's just a desolate wasteland.

Here, I'm not too far from High Point, NC which is still very much centered around furniture. Not as much manufacturing any more, though still some smaller, higher end pieces being made locally. They still have a massive "furniture market" convention every year where the worldwide manufacturers and buyers come to down to stroke each other off. They book up all the hotels for about a 100 mile radius during those two weeks.

I'd never heard of Martinsville being known for furniture until i started reading up on this company a couple days ago. Traces back to tobacco farmers branching out in to non-farming things in the early 1900's.

That whole central area of Northern NC and Southern VA was known for furniture. Water power from the Roanoke and other rivers encouraged industrialization.

I was going to say "Mid Century Revival" for it's style since the inlay work and drawer pulls are designs from the previous century. The dovetails are definitely machine done so that confirms it. Modern backer material as well. We have a couple pieces from my Grand parents like that. Came home from WWII and bought them.

SC VA and North Central NC had the furniture plants, I remember seeing one in the early 2000's near Appomattox VA, but I forget the name (maybe Hayles?). It was the last one that I know of. SW VA had a lot of textile mills until they were moved overseas 30+ years ago.

Cool
Congrats on a new interesting chapter to your life.

You've got the space to just unload stuff slowly, why not? No time?

Right now, that's the plan.

Originally, I was supposed to close 3 months ago and I planned to spend the winter clearing it out and prepping it to use as a wedding venue. With the delay in closing, there's no way I'd have it ready in time for Spring so I'm gonna push to next year. I still need to do more research to make sure the county isn't going to make me jump through any stupid hoops to do that.
