What's new

Best place to cross the rocky mountains

In 10 ply while you’re at it. I’m getting them from Peerless for $106 each and they seem to be doing me pretty well.
I'm just past plainview, going to see what they have when everybody opens. Amarillo is about an hour away, it'd be worth spending a little more to avoid having to go all the way there and back. Amarillo Hass peerless and everybody else

10 ply, good to know though.

My 1 225/75 current in use spare is from 2002  still holding the air, but it's dry and cracked everywhere.

It’s the best you can do in 15’s.
I "need" 2k lbs per tire, anything above that reapply should just give me added years.

If I can get the transmission sorted and address the rear sag of the trailer  ill have to admit that the RV is doing much better with the trailer than expected.

Bit more susceptible to the wind, but that's about meaningless. Seems to be stopping reasonably, doesn't feel like I'm getting pushed ever, all those things are much better than expected.

Building on the left, looks further away in pictures. Probably 400 yards away, is a truck and trailer shop. Somebody was working off hours or whatever and happened to be in the yard, apparently they do tires that may work amd not just tractor trailer stuff.

So that'll be my first stop :rasta:

Maybe a little preemptive Lucas oil trans fix would be a benefit. If you dump it in before it’s too late it works better. Don’t worry about having the trans over full.

On the one hand, I'm tempted to do filter and fluid in 900 miles. On the other hand, I'm tempted to do nothing. Lucas might be a good compromise

Going 27 to 87 then 70 into Denver, then up and around via 80

I assume this is supposed to be 27, 87 to I25 through Denver up to I80? If so, from about Monument area up to Fort Collins I'm regularly back and forth and will be all week for work stuff, so I'll keep tabs on this thread. Hopefully they can sort you out with some fresh black and rounds in the morning and get rolling. Fair warning, temps across the front range tomorrow are ~90* :homer:

I'm along this route as well all week. Ping me if you need help. If nothing else, maybe I can steer you one way or another.

90 is nice and cool. :rasta:

North side of plainview
I’m going to be in the greater Plainview area later. I’ll load up a couple 205 or 225 chinese trailer tires. We’ve got two 5 lug patterns but I don’t know what I’ve got sitting around. If you haven’t got something figured out by then I can bring them by. It’d probably be 9 o’clock or so.

These guys open at 8am and will be my first stop, since they are right next to me.

If they don't have tires, I'll let you know.

According to the internet, 5x4.5 which sounds right

Tractor supply is only a mile or so behind me, they appear to have 2 in stock.

If you've got a 15" 5 lug wheel with a tire that holds air, I'll happily buy it from you so that I can get back to 2 spares.

I’ve got a Chinese maypop 205 on a 5x4.5 wheel with me going to floydada. Keep us posted on what you find and I can bring it to Plainview later if you need it.
Not even wal mart has a set of 4 tires.

$105 plus whatever apiece, going to 225/75 10ply. Dropping the trailer off here and going to town for lunch and the park or whatever.

It's much nicer to travel without any real deadlines

Hit an ATM and then hit a junkyard. No fucking way they don't have piles of LT tires, 5x4.5 rims and a tire machine to put them together for you. Might even get yourself some snazzy alloys.
That's a good point, but at once a decade to buy a set, I can't really complain about the Chinese tires.

Plainview would be a culture shock for you. I don’t think there is a junkyard. There’s probably some Mexican guy that has used tires. He may be ok, he may want $200 for a 20 year old tire.

Are you saying that because it's too upscale for a junkyard or too desolate for one?

Because in either case it's pretty trivial for OP to just say fuck-em and stop at the next yard that's 100mi down the road. A 50mi detour isn't really a big deal seeing as he's already embarking on a multi-thousand mile trip.

Both. There are a lot of empty buildings all over that town. And a bunch of them have five or thirty old cars or trucks parked there. And a bunch of barns outside of town have old stuff parked. If you knew who to ask you might find something. But other than that, nothing rusts so they either keep it forever, scrap it in Lubbock, or send it to Mexico.

Everything going to be good then?

Yeah that'll be good. Then I'll have spare 225 as well.

I think part of the 3rd tire letting go is that it was 205 on one side and 225 on the other, same axle.

But that's what I had, so what I used. Waiting at the park for others to be hungry, grabbing some tacos and going to go with a later night tonight.

It's weird that the transmission is currently doing nothing weird I. The first 3 gears. C6 life:rasta:

Edit: I do appreciate you offering up and dragging along the tire though!

Sounds kinda like Springfield MA.

It's too desolate for a decent one, and finding a 5x4.5 wheel/lt combo good for 2klbs per tire is going to be tough. For a few thousand miles of driving, an extra couple hundred to loop around and hunt for tires isn't worth it. Especially at 7mpg, probably 9 without the trailer. Really erodes the value quickly.

I'll take a nap and lounge in the sun for a couple hours while a set of new ones arrive from Amarillo
