Best place to cross the rocky mountains

Just take plenty of ammo for hunting bison when you get to Wyomia. You gotta kill 4 of them to get like 3 pounds of meat is what I remember from the game.

And apparently don’t go this way.

That's not a pass I would take in his rig. :lmao: That's a steep fucker.

Anybody that takes Teton pass with an RV or a trailer should lose their license for 5 years and forever have to put a sign on their vehicle that indicates they are an idiot.

That'll take a while to fix. :eek::eek::eek:

Is that the road one would take from Jackson WY to Alta ID? When I went snowboarding at Grand Targhee that same road had a good sized avalanche come down and shut traffic down for a few hours while they cleared it off with a FEL.

Yup, that's the road. Hwy 22 in Wyoming and Hwy 33 in Idaho.

That's the one. It closes a dozen times or so every winter from avalanche.

A few extra easy miles in a sketchy rig is far preferable to a few less sketchy miles in a reasonable rig.

Things only break when you really need them. If I never have to rely on my brakes, they will be fine.

If I don't need my trans to have 10 tons at 5k rpm for 35 minutes, it will be fine

And so on.
Do you have a big-ass external trans cooler? Also a shift-kit to raise line pressures will help. I got 252k out of my 4R100 behind a mildly tuned 7.3 PSD, using this cooler.

I try to time my trip so I'm out of high ambient Temps sooner, whether that's leaving at 2am, or heading north first then doing the east west in cooler country

Might consider the same so you're climbing the bigger hills in lower ambient temps

I need to go pull the rear differential, again.

That's my biggest concern.

Well, and the trailer folding in half. Guess those are my 2 concerns
What’s wrong with the rear end? What rear axle does it have? You said axleS earlier. Is this thing big enough it’s got a tag?

Why would the trailer fold up?

I'm messing with the rear end. D70, no tag. S would've been a typo.

This is my first adventure doing a dana differential. I greatly prefer the drop out differential that I'm used to

Didn't catch any noise, but concerning amounts of glitter on the first lube change about 350 miles.

Just swapped out the abs tone ring and filed it down to see if I can get my psom functional above 35mph.

Also spend the last several hours trying to get more shims between the carrier bearings and the housing. Not what I'd call successful. Probably good enough to make this trip, probably not good for much more

And the trailer just got the tongue welded back on with some scab pieces, this will be the first time it's had a car on it since. With the extra length from the motorhome vs the truck, it's going to see more tongue flex than typical.

Of course, anything can happen. Those are just my two concerns that I'm aware of going into the adventure

Keep it out of 4th towing, I’ve never done 40 in NM but lower elevation is better with a gas engine. The drive from Vegas to Twin falls shouldn’t be too bad. Southern Idaho is only 2k feet or so.

Of course it’s going to be 200 degrees, so I hip you have really good ac.

Yeah, it’s hard to get proper bearing pre load on a D70 without a case spreader. Are we talking real fine glitter or pretty good flake? If it’s the Uber fine stuff I wouldn’t be all that concerned. I don’t base success off of glitter in the case but by how the wear pattern on the gears look and if the bearing races still look good. Break in on new parts always nets a little stripper dust. No noise is good but noise might not make up to where you are 30 feet forward of it.

Have a case spreader, still failure

It was all fine stuff, so it's all from the gears. Without enough preload, I'm concerned the gears will wear out rather quickly

The next time I do this, I'm going to remove the axle. Way too little space, can't hardly roll over or swing a hammer under there.

Were those new gears? That’s weird, the coast side (or reverse side) looks the worst. So too much back lash.
About 8 to 10 thou backlash...in a few spots. I really have myself convinced not enough preload was letting it open up more when under use.

New gears, very cheap gears, but new nonetheless. I'm not trying to learn in expensive stuff :rasta:

Just add some of this, problem solved.:grinpimp:

Test ride around the block, hand filed the ABS tone ring to get each tooth within 0.004" total runout, checked to make sure the back is under 5 thou flatness.....and speedo is good for up to 35 mph, not as bad through 45, useless above 45 mph

Had the kid sit in the middle and he couldn't hear anything odd, driving past big brick buildings, I couldn't hear anything odd.

Going to send it either way, at least it's all uphill loaded and downhill will be empty
