What's new

Best place to cross the rocky mountains

There is a large junk/wrecking yard on the east side of Amarillo. North side of I-40.
I've stopped there a few times t look for old semi trucks. The have or had everything from big rigs, busses to pickups/cars/trailers.

Yeah that'll be good. Then I'll have spare 225 as well.

I think part of the 3rd tire letting go is that it was 205 on one side and 225 on the other, same axle.

But that's what I had, so what I used. Waiting at the park for others to be hungry, grabbing some tacos and going to go with a later night tonight.

It's weird that the transmission is currently doing nothing weird I. The first 3 gears. C6 life:rasta:

Edit: I do appreciate you offering up and dragging along the tire though!
No problem. I wish I’d seen the thread sooner when you were on the side of the road needing a 13/16. You gotta get a cordless ugga dugga if you’re going to be doing this sort of thing.

I've got a generator and air compressor, thought about but didn't bring my pneumatic impact.

It really wasn't a big deal to swap out the tire with the 4 way wrench. It almost worked with my big adjustable

For the cost of a cordless impact, I could buy 3 tires instead

That’s what everybody thinks until they’re on the side of the road and use one.

Well, this place has far better Mexican food than anything in Central Texas:laughing: had to quiick remember Spanish as non oof the gals seemed to speak English.

$675 installed and such, about to be on the way...saved $60 worth of disposal fee, glad they gave me the option.

And on the road again...

Central WA has some Mexican food places I go when I'm over there that I have to point at the picture of what I want, none of the staff or customers speak much English.

Damn straight, and a jack that can lift your loaded trailer. I’ve popped enough tires to appreciate those things.

Added Lucas trans goo, disabled rwabs VSS and now I can cruise 65 :smokin: everything working as it should, just needs more input from the o/d button. Otherwise being loaded, doesn't bother me it wants to rap out 1st and second.

All good things :rasta:

Also check trailer bolt torque...3 were easy to tighten of the set, joys of the impact crowd :flipoff2:

Not sure why the tire guy was happy setting the tires to 50psi instead of 80, but he was fine to go up to 70psi on them.

Anyways, out of Amarillo now

Using some O/D, managed 7.5 mpg on the last tank.

Front axle gross rating = 4400lbs

Rear axle gross rating = 7800lbs according to the door

Trailer axle gross rating = 3500x2 for 7000 lbs

Scale tells no lies, guess I'm a little more portly than I figured. Really though I was going to be under 19k total.

Helps explain why the old 205/75 tires gave up, even with all the dry rot

That's a nice illustration of why my trailer is on 16's. Yours certainly doesn't look overloaded, but the scale says it is.
How far have you made it?

15” trailer tires are born looking for a reason to give up.

The 10 py 15s do alright with kind of loading. We have ran a lot of miles at around 7k on my dad's trailer and never lost a 10 ply, the oddball 8 ply seems to develop a leak about every 6 months but we've never had a catastrophic failure and it's the newest tire at 12 years old.

I did finally break down and decide to break down and buy a heavy duty trailer for the stupid things I like to buy and less events like are described here.

JR is right. run 10 ply on those 15s. I switched from D to E's on my bumper pull camper and it pulls easier with ten plies. I scaled the truck and camper on the way to a trip with the RZR in it and no water in the tank and I had 10k even on the trailer axles. would have been overloaded for the 8 plies the camper came with.

Couple valleys past Laramie now, stopping for lunch and such.

Telephone weather said 60* with wind chill feels like 0* rolled down the window and it was biting cold. Still making reasonable time, gusts of crosswind are helping to keep me in the 50-60mph range.

Well, fuck.

Made it to our destination. Put gas in the truck on the trailer in town. Unchained and.....nothing. no chuff, just crank. Lots of fuel and such, spray some carb cleaner, no change. Pulled off a vacuum cap, no change.

Pulled the bowl off the carb and swapped the 72 out for 69 jets on, going from 600 to 6000 feet, holley suggests drop 3 jet sizes.

Finally got a single "chuff" two separate times when releasing the key.

6v at the coil with key on, 8.5v while cranking...should be enough

Ran a wire right from battery positive to hot side of coil just for kicks, no change.

So before it got dark, chained it back up and went to town. Going to sleep in the truck stop parking lot and mess with it in the morning :shaking:

Glad you made it intact! How is the wifey doing with all this?

Get a meal in the lot of you and start again with a clear head and some sleep 😴 tomorrow

The wife is running lower stress than normal, which is nice. We brought all 3 cats, took a day for them to be fine in the RV and with each other being co close, but they seem to be doing well and that's all she is concerned about

The kid has been doing pretty good as well. He made an easy transition from video games to books. We brought a decent stack for him to read and he has crushed through 3 books so far with getting up here. Library in town is pretty good so we may have to stop by and rent some more later on.

I do ebooks through the library. Its pretty handy if you have mobile data plans

Alright. 10.8 volts at the battery while cranking, sounds fine. Hooked up to the rv to charge as it was sounding week.

Ignition coil meters out fine. 6v key in run and 8.5v while cranking. Not short or open internally.

Battery voltage to the 2 supply leads for the duraspark when key in run or start

Ground for the duraspark is good to battery ground.

Can't find spark with a screwdriver

Leaned out idle mixture 1/4 turn on both sides.

Not even a pop when using aerosols through the carb.

Well, now it works :lmao:

Playing with the meter and going through things.

Didn't have dist pickup signal at the duraspark. Did have good [about 580 ohm] resistance at the dist.

Took ye Olde sand paper and screwdriver to all the contacts and the variously broken connectors and got a reading at the ignition module.

Hit the key and fucker fired right off like it always has

Going to see if there is a vacuum gauge at the truck stop and do a little bit of idle and AFR tuning. Probably should get some new end connectors and improve a bunch of wiring for the ignition.

Sleep and coffee are a big help

Good luck on the vacuum guage. I have one and know how to use it but it's not something a diag tech really uses anymore.

As much as it sucks to do because “hacked” I’ve had to cut off the 4 pin Duraspark connector completely and crimp spade connectors on instead. On my old Jeep the wire inside the crimped spades inside the molded 4 pin ford connector had lost connection I’m guessing through corrosion.

The wire colors should match on both sides of the plug anyway.

Every factory plug I've unplugged has broken in some way, it's not the hack look I'm afraid of, it's the $20 for crimper and ends is all  I looked very specifically at my wiring stuff and said twice "no, I won't need any of that" when I was grabbing tools the other day
