I have a feeling the estimate will be stupid high. I've had a wi-fi based alarm and camera system for 7 years at the other house and it's worked very well. I don't know anyone who actually has an alarm and/or camera system in this area. Most people don't even lock their doors when they leave. The house is 1,000' up a driveway behind a gate. Residential burglary is almost non-existent here because people who break into houses get shot. The sheriff encourages it, even offers to come clean up the mess for free.
Anyhow
I talked to a friend of mine that's a everything electronic guru. He told me if the estimate is stupid high to switch to DIY mode.
I have been happy with my wi-fi based alarm, so I could install one of those with this house.
The only place I can think of for cameras would be on each corner of the patios facing out. I already have what the electrician is calling Christmas light outlets at each corner. I could easily run CAT6 to each outlet.
I could get speaker wire, a staple gun and a 14' ladder, and run that myself as well, even though it will be a lot of wiring. I figure 14 speakers minimum (4-8 at front patio, 4 in great room, 2 at garage patio, 4-6 in garage).
My electrician told me not to buy any wire or conduit. He can get it for me wholesale and goes to the gettin' place daily. I could have him pick up everything I need with a days notice. He's a cool guy who loves the house. Heck, he hasn't picked up his scissor lift. If it's still here I can use that.
DIY-ing it would save me a bunch of money, and it would allow me to wire it now and do the installation later when I get around to it.
Electrician showed me a neat trick for wiring you want to go through the drywall without a outlet, like for speakers or garage door opener controllers, etc. Most of you probably already know this, but I didn't.
This is CAT5 the electrician uses for garage door opener controllers. He said it's cheaper than the duplex wire, and comes with three backup sets of wire. He also uses it for the garage door sensors. It's inside the walls, all fancy and shit. Drywallers will do their drywall thing and leave it poking out.
