What's new

Anyone use a Garden Tractor loader?

I have a Case 646, it’ll do 1000lb at the pins. I think it was 6-700lb at the cutting edge? I checked once but I can’t remember. The 646 came with manual steering which sucks a lot, I converted this one to hydro. The 648 and ingersoll machines came with hydro. Dunno what a 4.0 weighs but it didn’t care at all about this

frame width is different from 400 to the 420/430 as well. there was a guy selling frame adapters over on Weekend Freedom Machines years ago when I was on there. not sure if that forum is still up? I really wanted a rear mount tiller for mine but never wanted to pay what they cost for the rear gearbox for the PTO and then the tiller.

Mine had starter weights (75# each) plus a weight bracket off the rear 3 point that I hung 4-65# weights on.

Tractordata.com says 500# of lift with the Deere model 20 FEL which is what I had on mine. It was much better than a shovel or wheelbarrow but more novelty than anything. If you know it's limitations and don't expect big tractor or skid steer performance it was kinda neat. I ended up selling the FEL off mine and bought a brand new car trailer with the money. They are pretty rare anymore and if you find the right buyer they are worth $$.
Ha, Yep 500# at the pins.
That's depressing.

20 Loader
500 lbs lift (full at pin)
226 kg
750 lbs breakout
340 kg

I grew up using a 70 john deere and model 45 loader for pulling engines and moving non running vehicles.

Had no idea how good I had it till I had to use a cherry picker.

How do you people even stand those things?

But I guess a lawnmower is not a good alternative.

You guys and your little tractors :flipoff2:

My .02...I have no idea why people buy small tractor loaders. They suck at everything. Can't lift the hat off your head, can't dig, suck for mowing, not enough power for pto...they SUCK!

Buy a skid steer and I'll bet you use it way more than you think. There's a reason every farm and every contractor has one.

The bigger problem will be steering and moving/stopping with a 2wd garden tractor.
Unless you hang 900# off of the back you will lose most (all?) traction from the back wheels and will teeter totter on the front axle.
Better to start with something 4wd (IMO).

My godfather farmed/ ranched a section of land in Ok.
He used to rib guys with 50 hp. "Toys"
I'm on 1.35 a skidsteer would just make dust and trip hazards. :lmao:

Not a garden tractor, but yellow loader tractors are cheap and will handle 1000 pounds.

Grew up with one like that (an Industrial 30).
If you go with that one, be aware that the high low sun gear sections can come apart where it was staked.
Easy to fix if you pull the top off the transmission to fix it, slide it back together and put in a few tack welds in to hold the pieces together, but if you burn a nice hot bead all the way around, it will shrink enough to not fit back over the gear.

I am kind of kicking around this idea.

Might be a fun project, cheap enough so who cares. says 900 pound lifting capacity, still small enough to fit in my barn and shouldn't tear up the yard as bad as a skid steer.

Can't decide, but I am sure it will be gone this weekend.

Shouldnt be to hard to get it going. Just need to be able to turn the fuel of/on and get 12v to the starter

I had a 9N with a loader. It was as useless as tits on a bull.

I now have a 37 hp skid steer. Moves snow, dirt, wood, chain hooks welded to the top of the bucket to use as a hoist, and I have forks that attach to the bucket for obvious uses. I also use those forks with a chain for pulling/installing engines. Drug fallen trees and stacked them for burning after a storm. Most versatile piece of equipment I've ever owned.

owned a JD 2305 and 1025... short answer is NO to the 1000#.

And for those rated at the pins... that's often 2'+ closer to tractor than the edge of the bucket, so reduce capacity significantly at the cutting edge.

Skid steers won't tear up the yard, if you don't "skid" them. Yeah, I know kinda defeats the purpose of a "skid steer", but multi point and/or wide turns will not tear up a yard. Biggest issue with a skid steer is usually the weight and small contact patch of the tires (if not a tracked skid steer). I have a small skid steer with a 25 HP engine and 1500lb lift capacity and it weights about 3K. It will track the shit out of a soft yard.
As has been said, once you get a skid steer you'll find all sorts of uses for it and not know how you lived without one. Make/buy a few attachments...pallet forks, bucket, etc. and you'll find all sorts of uses for it.
If you are wanting a backup mower, find an old 8N Ford with a finish mower. You should be able to find a decent setup for under $3K easily. It will also still do some tractor stuff with other attachments, since it has a 3 point...brush hog, blade, dirt scoop, plow, disc, carry-all, post hole digger, boom, moving/pulling trailers, etc.

Tiha those 20 series ford/new holland tractors are 10x what you where originally looking at

1720
1920
2120

They're good units though.
I have the service manual for that whole series of someone wants it.

Thanks guys, I go look at it in the morning. Talked to the owner. After going back and forth I just flat out asked him if he thought it was impossible to get working again.

He said, if you can find a dash and wire harness and throttle controls it is possible. Told him I plan on building all that myself. Doesn't need much to operate.

After that he started pinpointing stuff, like the oil fill cap partially melted into the valve cover so the cover has to come off to clean it out. But nothing ever got hot enough to leak out oil or fluids. The hoses are all in tact but the outer covers show heat damage. He started getting excited about it. LOL

It has been stored inside.

Couple hundred dollars and I can have some rear tires to mount on it. With rims actually. Already looked LOL Get tires on, get loader off, go to town.

But gotta see it first. I want to see the oil levels, I want to see that the boots are still on the shifters. Power steering is still intact. That type of thing.

Bring a batterey, jumper cables, and some diesel and drive it onto the trailer

The rear tires are burnt off, otherwise I might. LOL

Actually had a guy try to reneg on a deal when I bought a non running car and got it running to drive up on the trailer. It got ugly.

Perfect, you have to buy new tires anyway

17/19/2120 are decent tractors, but as I understand it parts are real hard to come by.

Keep in mind as well there's a huge difference between lifting xxx lb and doing it safety and in a way that's useful. Expecting to lift 1000 lb with a 1500 lb tractor is a bit absurd.

Reach and stability are also important - you might be able to lift 1000 lb, but with it all of 6" in front of the radiator. Or where it's likely to flip over on a slight slope. Likewise, you're putting lots of load on those impossible to replace front axle parts doing it.

So I picked this up a few years ago after a bunch of issues with my new Holland l175 that I had bought new.

You can rent a skid steer on any corner for cheap. The multione mini loaders can be found way cheaper than anything like them.
They are now branded Vermeer here in the states but the same machine.

Mine has a 28 HP yanmar and it's awesome. You can run it all over a lawn and not mess anything up if you unlock the diffs.

I have a side shift flail mower and bucket and forks. There's a million attachments available.
Nevermind the brand if you guys come across a mini loader for a good deal grab it.

They are a totally European market thing but catching on in the states.

Despite being the same as a Vermeer the multione go really cheap anytime they end up at a auction.

So its like a shitty skidsteer with less power and copacity... but cheaper?

Will it lift 1000 pounds? Like to move an engine?
No.

Always kind of wanted a diesel 430, I could swap attachments between them.

Some attachments, not all.
Some 400 attachments are 400 specific.

Will I hate it?

Beats nothing. But they are nearly useless.

The model 20 loader designed to work on the JD 400 is rated at 750 lbs, so I didn't think 1,000 is out of reach for an aftermarket loader or even the JD loader.

It is. The 1025R won’t even lift 1000#. Not even with ballast.

I have carried 900+ pounds

I call bullshit. I own 3 BX tractors. 2 are new. They won’t lift 900#.
I had a B3350. Much bigger tractor. It would barely lift 1000#.

I also have a Case 321F. It will lift 1000#. Bucket probably weighs 700#. Maybe 800.
