What's new

2024 Wildfire season. :(

Ruidoso, NM is currently evacuated with 500+ structures lost last I saw.

Looks like the cabin that was in my family for over 70 years and built in 1922 burned up today. It was inside the fire boundary on the map around 3:00pm.

Got this message from the current owner around 4pm today:

Friends up there told me that Ruidoso will never be the same. I’m not sure if the cabin survived or not at this point there’s no power so I can’t look at the cameras.
It’s really sad.

A lot of fond memories over the years at that cabin :frown:

The pictures and videos of the fires are nuts.

Air quality is also pretty bad.

Has anyone actually seen the property?

Those wild land fire folks have a “Hold my beer” attitude (the ones I’ve met at least). It could still be standing, but missing a few trees 🤞🏻

Yup, we are looking at a place near where the creek fire burned. Bunch of folks in the community are fire fighters. They got after it and everything around it burned, but it survived. I'm sure they also had a few connections that helped them out.

Nope, the village is under evacuation orders and the fire is 0% contained.

Sorry the hear '84 Bronco II That's a bummer. Reports this morning are saying 1400+ structures lost. Sounds like multiple hotshots from Smokey Bear have lost there places too. Gofundme was set up: Donate to Help Rebuild Lives of Smokey Bear Hotshots, organised by Michelle Levy

Not really my loss since the cabin was sold in 2015, but kind of surreal like hearing an old friend you haven't seen in years died unexpectedly.

I saw this picture posted. It really gives a scale of the Ruidoso fire (it is the big one furthest to the right in the picture)

You would think in this raging nanny state they would stop giving ammunition to the amateurs and idiots right in the beginning of fire season :shaking:

So sorry to hear of the losses of cabins etc. I love Ruidoso... many great memories of that area and friends who have places there.

I try not to be pessimistic. We are always enlarging our firebreaks and trying to harden, but, a big fire is a big fire.

My sister told me that the rains have started in Ruidoso and now they are evacuating people because of the flooding

I saw one video of some pretty serious flash flood. Son comments say the rains were behind the leading edges of fires, some say they hit the south fork fire

Dang it's one of amazing riding route to go on (191)
It's a few miles from 191. And now 2000 acres. I have some friends running up it from Phoenix in their Challengers on Saturday. Hopefully it doesnt spread west anymore than it has the last couple days. We do have rain in the forecast.

sad thing with that is the structure burned from the inside out.
the dead grass near the fence is not burned, the leaves and needles on the trees are still mostly green.

no body was there to save it when the fire came through.
embers got in the crawl space or attic, and it was done

That's what I learned when I started the job. Shame not enough time for residents to board up and have chance to prevent that. Gonna be a shitshow with insurance

Might need to reach out for road closure. If fire is spreading toward 191 they will want road closed to not allow civilian through

I'm gonna drive down there today and check it out. We had a nice rain last night hoping that knocked it down.

I had a helicopter fly over a little while ago…

There is now the copter, two bombers, and a OV-10 Bronco orbiting just south of the HOA. Thankfully winds are light.

Helicopter just went over again heading home. Checked flight radar app, no aircraft in the area now. No visible smoke plume from my view.
Sac Metro Fire doesn’t screw around :grinpimp: :beer:
(And I can’t leave out CalFire)

We got a crazy thunderstorm yesterday afternoon that has wreaked havoc east of Fresno. They are claiming 1000 lighting strikes in 3 hours
The air traffic has been crazy to watch today.
And this is after a 90 acre fire about 2 miles from our house on Saturday.

Fire season is here.

We've been lucky so far this year around my place. Been getting lots of rain, a little lightning but its been wet enough no issues so far.

I was talking to an old rancher the other day and he said the bad fire's we had here in 2017, the season started just like this, lots of rain got everything growing and green...and then no rain, and everything died and was ready to burn.

I have my goats working away, and been cleaning up some dead fall, and going to limb up all my trees on the house side of the property.

I also left the beavers alone and let them build up there dam and now have a good 5-6 acres of ponds 6'+ feet deep to pull water from.

I told the wife I would be happy with rain all summer long if that means no fires.

Dad just got back from the Ruidoso fires last night. Said the structure losses were pretty wild and the whole thing was run rather poorly :frown:
