2021 Firewood thread

Got home a couple of hours ago with my first load of the year. I should have blocked it there before loading it, instead I just cut the logs and loaded them that way. I was planning on blocking and splitting it at home...instead I’m washing down a flexeril with a beer since I jacked my back loading one of the logs:homer:

Took this one out last fall to make room for my Connex.

Far too rotten to be firewood, but that was OK cause the Motherfucking Em-goddamn-rald ASS borers killed all my Ash trees.

This Big Oak was a wind fall. I wanted to take it out but it was far too sketchy being a double leader where half had already fallen and the remainder was rotten. I Got about a cord of solid dried wood out of it, the rest I burnt.

It not only didnt hit the new connex, it missed every damn thing in the yard.:smokin:

Made some firewood just cutting my way into my property almost two weeks ago.

Good thing the gate is just a cable, all I had to do is push the posts back out.

I hauled away limbs too, the driveway was getting too restricted.

This is getting me excited for my arrival at the new place in Maine. Gotta go pick up a real chainsaw in short order when we arrive. My crappy electric Homelite ain’t gonna cut it for this kinda work.

Just saying. After running a 391 for about a decade I wish I knew then that the 362 was worth the extra couple of bucks for weight to power ratio. I've been super happy with my 391, but the 1lb+ difference makes a difference after running it all day long. If you can swing it get a small saw with a 16" bar and a bigger saw with a 20" or 24-25" bar. You'll end up running the small saw a lot more than the big one.

You will want a real saw, either Stihl or Husqvarna get the pro models from whatever dealer is close to home. They are a bit more, but well worth it. I run a 372XP and 550XP due to the closest dealer being a Husky dealer at my old house. Now my Deere dealer is a Stihl dealer, but I can't justify spending $2k just to swap saws.

Snow should be gone in the next month or so, looking forward to getting into the woods early this year. Starting a new job in a few weeks, will have a lot more time to do stuff this year.

Yeah, small saws are where it’s at for most work.

I’m in the same boat, have a 391 and looking at going to a 362. Probably a regular 362 and not the Mtronic version.
I end up using the 170 more than I ever thought I would for limbing and clearing though.
391 & 180 here. I'd rather wear the 180 out and buy a new one than to run the 391 if I don't have to. Great saws, both of them, but no sense limbing with a big saw if you don't need to.

agree with everyone else. Have a Poulan 4050 20" bar, and a Husky 345 with a 16" bar. I almost never grab the Poulan. I'm a homeowner tho, don't do the quantity or size some others do

Welcome to Maine,...
thanks. We are very excited!

yeah I’m thinking a good Stihl or a Huquarvana. Been researching a little bit on and off. There is a dealer near our new place that carries both brands.

our new spread is in Mariaville. Pretty much right smack dab between Bangor and Ellsworth. Hancock county. Got 24 acres with a huge house on it close to Graham Lake.

I hear that. I usually subscribe to the buy slightly more tool than I realistically think I need theory.

Nice. RT9, I think, is the Airline Rt. Been there on my dual sport motorcycle. Being passed by fully loaded semis doing 140mph.

Beautiful area. Jealous.

Yeah we are on route 181. That’s the road at the end of the driveway. We are super excited and can’t wait to get there. House is huge and gorgeous. And the property is fantastic as well. Guy we bought from still owns 36 more acres around it and we have told him if he ever wants to sell the rest to ask us first. Apparently we have some wild blueberry patches on the property too. Best part is we can’t see a single other house from the house. We have a neighbor right across the road but can’t see them from the house itself.

i have a Stihl 026 with a 16" bar.. I bought it used a few years ago and I love that saw. My go to for just trimming and working up smaller stuff. I have my Dad's 044 that he bought new in early 90s. It's too much for him use anymore so I bought it off him a few years ago. Buddy has a 461 and it's a nice saw. pulls a 24" bar easy in hardwood. If only buying one saw I would look at a Stihl 362 or so. If you can swing it I'd buy a "limbing saw" and a "felling/bucking" saw.

Stihl. 044 been in my hands for the last 28 years , over 400 cord easily. all original including the spark plug.
all you need to know about pro grade saws.

I recommend this as well. A 50cc and a 70cc saw are the best place to start for most.

x3 on the two saw approach. I have a 260 with a 16" and 18" bar and a 361 with a 20" and 24/25" bars. This set up gets the job done for me, but I'd like to have a 261 and a 461/462. I like my 361 but it's easy to bog it down.

Brother has a 361/2 I am not sure which. it pulls a 20" bar well. I am sure that 24" bar is lugging it pretty hard if it's in hardwood.

It definitely pulls the 20" better, but the 24" is nicer for falling the larger trees. There isn't anything but hardwoods around here!

That's when you get a skip tooth chain. I've buried a 20" bar in hard oak more times than I can count. WOT and a sharp chain are your only hope.

This squatted truck thing, am I doing it right? Not getting any street cred and bitches panties aren’t dropping wherever I go. Hmmmmm. :flipoff2:
