What's new

2” .156 wall Dom

Well damn. Alum tube I have at the shop is 1.875 x 1.625. Too small.

If you’re gonna try to stop all the leaks, careful tightening the valve. Very chinesium. Little brass and nipple from the back room, ready to go.

You find any tube OP? I’m doing 2” .120 welded seam I have on hand tonight when the boy gets home from school. Experiment a bit.

Not yet, I know I just need to nut up and buy it but I don’t want to lol. Probably get some before next weekend and make a project out of it with the kids.

I feel like you are reliving my youth:lmao:

I never built one that could launch golf balls but I did build a PVC piston valve gun that would shoot 1/2" steel rods.

Those quick exhaust valves are ok and will probably be fun and safe but pistons are where it's at.

There used to be an odd PVC pipe size that fit golf balls perfectly which you could maybe use as a liner?

I just like building all the shit now that I couldn’t have as a kid. 🤷‍♂️

Does your pop off work? What psi will it let you go to? My gauge is in bar so I sharpied psi’s on it

8 bar it barely holds. If I don't poke it in with my finger, it will self reset and hold at 6.5 bar or so. Not sure what psi we should be launching at. I have several other pop offs around the shop. 116 psi sounds low.

hmm, worth investigating, you could knurl the id of that a bit maybe, or epoxy something into the side for spin before sliding it into whatever outside containment tube you had to keep shards from impaling bystanders.

The pvc size is 1 1/2" class 200. It's thin wall so you would want to use it as a liner.

Can’t wait to look that up when I get back in front of a computer, hopefully I can find an aluminum tube that easily slips over it

Would rifling be appropriate for a golf ball, or would it be a hinderance?

Loose fit is easily remedied with a patch or two made outta your old briefs that the elastic's gone bad on

With the dimples rifling doesn't seem necessary. Years ago there was a website called spudgun. There was lots of info there.

one of the local guys made a golf ball cannon that he would bring each year. (black powder)
Did it happen to have a brass or aluminum body cast around a steel DOM barrel?

If so, I'd bet it was cast at CSU, Chico.

EDIT: also FYI, a black powder golf ball cannon will huck a patched 1 lb lead fishing weight through two car doors

I remember finding that when I built my tater launcher, really wanted one of their rifled barrels.

huh, tony rumore is one guy that I'd actually trust to give good info
I agree with not trying to use a rifled barrel on a ball. When they started rifling muskets, they started using the minie ball.

1.5" SCH10 SS is 1.68 ID, too tight? we be pulling a mandrel through it?

I just ordered some 2” 1/8” wall. 1.75” Id, should be close enough. If it’s really bad I’ll spend more time tracking down a tighter fit.

Got extra t-shirts no longer wearable saved for rags? Cut squares for patches - if you're willing to dick with ramming each shot, all sizes of golf ball will fit well. Works great for black powder, dunno how much the drag affects air launched speed.

Add baby powder.
