1991 Snow Tracker Build

That thing is pimp as hell
Thanks! It was a fun little truck. He enjoys the hell out of it, gets offers all the time. Here's a few pics since I built it before I found irate.

Question guys, and I’m pretty sure I’m probably doing damage, but when I swap a carrier, do I have to put paint on the ring gear and check it? Or is that only when doing ring gear and pinion?

If you didn’t dissemble the pinion you don’t have much to check. You put a locker in this thing right? The only thing you need to verify when you put the carrier/ring gear back in is the back lash. No paint involved in that process, just a dial indicator.

Note for future tear downs. I did make sure it has a slight bit of movement before engaging the pinion.

I did put a rear locker in this. It has held up fine so far…so assuming all is good? :homer:

I think he broke some of the mounts off the 3rd and is swapping gears to another 3rd. So he's messing with everything.

I basically put a mark where the top capture was. Then counted turns. I reversed the install and made sure there was no side to side play, a little movement before engaging the pinion, looked good…then spun it and it spins very well.

About the same thing I did with the rear locker.

Oh my…

Did a small rock test in the yard. Drove it down the road with the hubs locked in 2WD. All good.

Then I said, “Maybe I should really test it.”

I almost killed it again.

Got up on the rock (pics never do anything justice) with a bit too much beans, and slid off sideways. Landed on the diff and A-arm. :homer: Once I winched out of that I got pinned between more rocks and trees and had to go oh so slowly backing up over those rocks.

Got it out and nothing killed a bus load of nuns. :smokin::flipoff2: Also really surprised there’s no rub!

I really need to know my limits and stop committing to conquering an obstacle.

How did you do the ends to mount the CV’s?

Did you fab up your own mounts to bolt it in as well?
I cut down the stock CV on short side and added a flange. You can cut the long side axle down and use the flange or you can cut and build your own. The long side is 26 spline shaft from a 99+ Grand Vitara. I am using the ends/pocket bearing from an older sidekick housing and the 99+ inner bearing (fits perfect). I built the flange that bolts on the end to hold the seal(uses 99+ seal).

I am installing the diff right now so I will post pictures/build thread later. (1999 Suzuki Grand Vitara on 35s with 3.5" of lift)

Not sure if this will be of any benefit to you, but have you considering a center section brace?

Looks like you used a 1st gen track kick rear axle as a donor?

Do you think that the extra strength over a Sami diff is needed if you don't have those parts laying around?

Also, you want to buy a Toyota cv axle adapter kit? :flipoff2:

I have everything laying around except the Grand Vitara parts. No idea where to source those shafts.

I wanted to use the rear axle from an older kit so I could use the 4 bolts on the third for my tie-in to the frame. I also have a few kick/Vitara rear axles floating around.

I have seen them on ebay for $50-70. The short side is just a stock cv cut down with flange welded on.

Here is a write up of the mod:

Is the 96+ Track/Kick axles 26 spline to match the rear Track/Kick diff? I’m finding conflicting info searching.

Yeah, I am using an older diff (1995 sidekick 26 spline) with a 1999+ vitara long side shaft. I did have to machine the carrier to allow the short “cv” shaft to slide in.

Pretty sure this is turning into more than my abilities currently allow.
