What's new

08 Tacoma SAS/LS swap

Got the universal charcoal filter mounted. So car, no fumes coming from that that I can tell. I accidentally ordered rubber lined fuel hoses instead of the PTFE lined ones again so I think I am getting some fuel smells from those lines (garage smells like gas when truck is in it overnight now). I'll just leave it outside for now until I can narrow that down

Big past two weeks.

  • 4.56 gears and Grizzly locker installed (rear only, front will be done later)
  • All brake lines made and ran (the tee on the axle is leaking, new one incoming)
  • Started new shock mounts on frame. The previous ones were too close to the tires for my liking
  • Transmission rebuilt, new torque converter in, new trans pan with temp bung installed, driveshaft in
  • Pinion angle set and welded in along with lower shock mounts
  • Trans lines made and installed
  • new grill

So another new brake Tee incoming along with a flex trans dipstick, then fill the trans and rebleed the brakes and we will be movin. Then I will finish the upper shock mounts

What a week. The brake lines were still being a nightmare so I ended up ditching the rear hard lines and brass tee and threw on some braided lines with a -3 tee. The rear brakes were finally not leaking.

Had to replace the master because it was also leaking. Got that in and bled the brakes and proceeded to drive around the yard where everything felt good, and just as I was finally ready for the neighborhood road test drive, the pedal went to the floor. Everything looked fine so I pulled the master off the booster and the pushrod extension was gone. It broke off the end of the booster pushrod when it fell out. So now I had to replace the booster and make a new pushrod extension

After spending way more on the brake system than I'd like to admit, I finally have a truck that moves and stops on its own. The brakes feel good so far, but still need to be broken in along with other things. Got the trans to shift through the gears and got the truck up to about 40 with no issues so far. Time to start to plan a tune session on the dyno.

This is how I pulled out the extension. The tip of the stock pushrod barely stuck in the end of the extension which caused the extension to kind of "buckle" when the pedal was pushed which caused it to get wedged sideways, which in essence sheared the end of the pushrod off and they fell into the booster. Very glad this happened in my backyard.

New extension I made up. The sleeve captures all of the booster pushrod which prevents things from wanting to get pushed sideways and bound up. The pedal now feels just like it should with no chance of the extension falling off again

New brake lines. Zipties are temporary and everything will be better mounted soon.

I got the rear shocks done and checked all fluids after driving it a little further today around the neighborhood. Then I gave the truck a wash and did a donut in the yard before taking some pics as it's finally a mobile truck for the first time since purchase

Winch Solenoid mounted on the old battery spot and winch rope spooled onto the winch. And fuck I hate Factor 55 shit, sticks out like a sore dick and requires a shackle to use it for anything. The stupid thing is spliced into the winch rope so I am just going to buy another rope that has a regular hook on it.

JB Custom shifter is in its final spot. I hate installing cable shifters but the outcome is always worth it as they shift as smooth as possible. A leather shift boot is in the works already. I will have to make a little bracket to keep the shift cable off of the transmission shift rod but that should be all it needs. I also finished the trans shifter itself under the truck by adding a 5/16" heim to it can move and rotate freely. Everything clears underneath, even though the picture might not appear that way

Did you install the factory bumper over the top of your tube bumper?

Only did pulls in 2nd gear as this truck just ain’t designed to spin the tires at 120mph. I don’t have the actual numbers at the moment but final run was around 305hp at the wheels and around 385hp at the crank. I’ll post the actual screenshots once I get them.

with that being said, everything went well and the truck runs and shifts great.

About 200 trouble-free road miles so far.

Things I have done since the last post...

  • Made a polycarb intake cover to keep some hot air out of the engine
  • Added an 18" Vibrant resonator
  • Installed new u-joints and seals in the front axle shafts
  • Received the Grizzly locker and 4.56 gears for the front
  • Received the Warn hubs

I plan on making the install appointment for the front gears sometime next week after I order the install kit.

Front bumper updates...

I still was set on keeping the factory bumper but needed some recovery points at the very least. So, this is what I came up with for now. I am going to add more to it in the future and still retain the factory bumper. It will pretty much be a full tube bumper that will be hidden all the time.

The bumper sits perfectly on the tube connecting the recovery mounts to give it a little rigidity. I am very happy with how it came out.

Also scored these for $1k. Yokohama Geolander G003 37x12.5R17 with I think 10k miles on them and a brand new spare. Never ran these before so we will see how they do

I started reading more into cooling fans and started questioning my setup after seeing temps get as high as 226* while at a long red light on a pretty hot day. My original fans were 12" Summit Racing fans rated at around 727 CFM at around 7.7 amps each and it turns out that they are actually 11" fans. So, I went with two 12" Spal's that pull 1451 cfm and 14.5 amps each, so doubling the amps and doubling the CFM.

The fans kick on low speed around 203* and high speed at 217*. After a good test drive, the temp never got above 216* and usually stayed around 199-207 when cruising.

Trimming of the shroud showing how much smaller the old fans were. Plenty of room for the much bigger Spal fans

Next update should include getting the front axle finished sometime mid-August. Then, time to wheel

this thing is DONE!!!

Grizzly locker and 4.56 gears installed in the front and everything is now buttoned up.

The Mishimoto thermostat that I had installed failed to open out of nowhere while just idling in my driveway while I wasn't paying much attention. I reluctantly installed that piece of shit at my tuner's request and it almost cost me an engine (he wanted a lower temp activated stat). Luckily the scangauge alarmed me and let me know what was happening. Hard for me to believe that Mishimoto is still even in business with how dogshit all of their products are. Ok I'm done ranting....

Looks awesome, sounds great. Killer fab work!

Were these axles full width 99-04 Superduty axles?

I would have such a hard time not fucking that body up.

Turned out badass man, great job!

Let's see it on some trail! :stirthepot:

Knocking out small stuff the last couple of weeks... then maybe I will wheel this thing?

  • First oil change done
  • Gap guards for the front wheel wells done
  • Front bumps done
  • Rear bumps almost done
Also: updated the first post with some more build info/parts list info

Rear bumps are complete. They should compress just right once the bed has some weight in it and the front is forced to flex more. The tire eats the shock still, oh well.

I should be posting some wheeling pics in the next week and a half though.

Hurricane Helene foiled my wheeling plans for the weekend, but it also required me to make a supply run up to my family's place in Madison, where the eye went over. Bunches of trees down, but the cabin is in tact still....

500 mile round trip total loaded down with spare tire, two coolers of ice, chainsaws, fuel for chainsaws, 10 gallons for generators, and a corn slinger off the bumper
