'05+ Ford Super Duty Dana 60 Axle Tech & Info

I feel like I remember reading an answer to this question somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it again; Is anyone running one of these axles without the outer seal or o-ring in the knuckle? Those are just needed for the vacuum hubs?

I am not using any of the seals or O-Rings. Using big bell shafts. No problems so far.

So I found out that my 4.88 OEM Super60 F550 pinion uses a crush sleeve from the factory when aftermarket pinions are normally solid shank were the sleeve would be and then use shims.
ECGS looks like they make a spacer and shim kit so I am going to give that a try.
Sounds like torquing around 400ft lbs to get the crush sleeve to start collapsing and not over torque is reason enough to go the spacer route.

Soooo could you use a '05+ super duty 60 as a rear steer application? offset pinion and all

I'm doing that right now on a Rock Lizard chassis. '08 60s front and rear. To begin with, I'm just gonna run the factory 1550 axles for budget, eventually I'll call Ouverson and hand him a couple paychecks.

Yukon makes a solid replacement for the crush sleeves on most axles, including my sterling and SD front 60.

FYI, seller "Sparktecmotors" on Ebay is selling the SD60 front 1550 shafts for $148 and $155 shipped.

Thanks, best I'd found elsewhere was $165/$170. Axles will be one of the last things I buy, if the cash is there I'll call Ouverson earlier...

In case anyone is interested, these seem to be selling out quick, there's 4 sets left after I bought mine.

Driver Shaft, 10013781 $150.13 shipped
Passenger Shaft, 10013778 $158.06 shipped

Under $310 delivered

I'm seeing $385 delivered from ECGS, so this is 20% cheaper.

I posted these on the other site years ago, I figured I'd dig em out for the new thread...

My short side showed up, long side left the box in transit. They do NOT pack them well.

Wouldn't that be the lockout or drive flange?

Guess that depends on what he's talking about. I took his comment as being directed at the 1550 shafts, which are a stock replacement part. Stock lockouts work with them. If he was asking about the big boys I posted the picture of, those don't use a lockout or drive flange, they spline directly into the hub. But you need at least a 40 spline carrier for the inners to work, pretty sure Randy isn't cutting 'em down to 35 (and what would be the point anyway...)

:rolleyes:You didn't read did you? His quote was direct. It had nothing to do with the ouverson Stubs, i can assure you of that. Look who he's quoting, and what that quote was about.

And thanks for the explanation, but i already knew all of that:flipoff2:

Your ouverson shafts look:smokin:Though
I don't see a need for those on my rig, but I'm guessing you'll never break a stub again:laughing:

I did read, but sometimes people quote the wrong post, and since he was asking about fitment, which we know isn't an issue with the 1550s...

And I wish those were my shafts, but not yet. I'll be running the 1550 shafts for the near future anyway...

Who makes a 40 spline carrier to fit the '05+ Ford dana 60?

Same carriers as the older 60s, so ARB, Detroit, Yukon, etc...

If I remember correctly, Ouverson will take a 35 spline ARB and punch it out to 44

Drive flange was the word I was searching for. I didn't think the stub was big enough to spline directly.

05+ can be had either way, drive flange, or lockout. I'm gonna run lockouts on mine, they're the stock warns so we'll see how it goes....
I didn't think you were quoting the wrong guy lol

How big a tire can the stock 35-spline axles handle on an overland rig?

Would they be able to handle, say, Continental MPT 81 - 365/80 R 20 (43") military tires?

How much weight? HP? Driving style? Trails? Everything comes into account on this, as well as luck. In general, for overlanding, I would say they'd be fine.

Weight:
About 5,500lbs loaded ('94 Bronco)
Also towing 3,500 trailer

HP:
Eventually: 400 to 650HP & 400 to 650ft/lbs torque

Driving style:
Think; travelling from Anchorage, AK to Cape Horn South America TYPE of driving.
And Moab! :flipoff2:

Luck:
Good point

I'd upgrade to chromo minimum. 40 spline is probably better... Unless you wanna carry a few spares for each corner.

No, those are Ouverson Violator shafts that use a Rockwell u-joint. 40 spline is just a bit bigger than the 35s, I want to say 1.7" diameter vs 1.5" for the 35s. Everything needed for 40 spline is available from multiple vendors. I like Branik, but they're definitely not the only game in town...

The Ouverson's are WAY overkill for 99% of the wheeling population, and the current versions don't need any massaging to fit.
